Two youths had suffered bullet injuries, of which one had died during treatment at a hospital in Chandigarh while treatment of the other was going on. Old enmity was said to be the cause of the murderous attack. Initially, some villagers told mediapersons that the deceased was a kabaddi player but the police categorically denied the same and said the victim was fond of keeping pigeons at his house and he was not into kabaddi sport professionally. He might have played the game at the village. After assault, the suspects fled the scene. The SP said after getting information, a police team from Samrala rushed to the scene. Both injured were taken to the Civil Hospital, Samrala, from where they were referred to a hospital in Chandigarh, where Gurvinder succumbed to his injuries. He said all four assailants were sent by Sandeep, a resident of Dyalke village in Samrala, who had some old enmity with Gurvinder. When the assailants came, they took the name of Sandeep and told Gurvinder that he had to face consequences of keeping enmity with Sandeep. A few suspects were rounded up by police. A murder case was registered against five persons and raids were being conducted by the police to nab the suspects. All assailants belong to a village in Samrala and were having a criminal background. Mainly, the key suspect, Sandeep, has been facing around 10 criminal cases, Pawanjit added. Bike-borne snatches chain from woman Ludhiana, November 4 A bike-borne miscreant snatched a gold mangalsutra from a woman in broad daylight at Makkar Colony, Giaspura, and fled the scene. The entire incident was captured on a CCTV camera and after procuring the footage, the police launched a probe. The victim, Priyanka, said she was returning home from a hospital after taking her son’s medicine around noon on Monday. The incident occurred when she reached the street near her house. She said a couple, who appeared to be husband and wife, was walking behind her. A speeding biker came from the rear and pounced on her. Before she could react, the man snatched her mangalsutra and sped away. The CCTV footage of the incident has surfaced. It showed the woman was seen walking in the street when the biker approached her from the rear, snatches her chain and flees in the blink of an eye. She even ran a short distance to catch the man but he managed to escape. Police officials said they received a complaint from the woman and were investigating the matter. Investigation was being conducted based on CCTV footage and efforts were underway to identify the suspect. Such miscreants would not be spared. The man would be apprehended soon. — TNS Remembering the Guru MC cracks whip on open garbage dumping, issues challans to over 50 violators in city Stop violation to avoid action, Mayor, civic body chief appeal to residents Tribune News Service Ludhiana, November 4 A day after Municipal Corporation (MC) Commissioner Aaditya Dachalwal issued strict orders to ensure cleanliness, the civic body has intensified the drive against violators indulging in open dumping of garbage across the city. Civic body teams issued challans to over 50 residents and shopkeepers for open dumping of garbage in different parts of the city. The teams are keeping a strict vigil over the violators round the clock. Besides issuing challans, the violators are also being asked to pick up waste thrown by them in the open areas or by roadsides. Meanwhile, Mayor Inderjit Kaur and MC Commissioner Aaditya Dachalwal have appealed to residents to support the civic body and stop dumping of garbage in the open to avoid action. The residents had been appealed to stop burning of waste too, otherwise, hefty challans would be issued against the violators. Over 50 challans have been issued in different areas, including Pakhowal Road, MC officials issue challan to a violator during a drive in Ludhiana. Tajpur Road, Chandigarh road (rear side of Vardhman Mill), Ferozepur road, Feroze Gandhi Market, Ghumar Mandi, near Pavilion Mall, College road, Gill Road, among other areas. The officials said the drive to issue challans against the violators would be continued in coming days too and hefty challans would also be issued against those caught burning the garbage. Wherever required, strict legal action would also be taken against violators. Ludhiana, November 4 Following the murder of kabaddi player Tejpal Singh in Jagraon recently, there had been constant tension between the police and his family as the latter had not been giving permission to the police for the post-mortem examination of the victim’s body as some suspects were yet to be arrested by the police. On Tuesday, after several meetings, the family had agreed and gave nod for the post-mortem examination. After which, a board of doctors conducted the autopsy at the Civil Hospital, Jagraon. The arrested suspects in the case were identified as Harpreet Singh, alias Honey, a resident of Rumi village in Jagraon and Gagandeep Singh, alias Tejpal Singh, the victim. Gagana, of Kili Chahal in Moga. The third identified person, Harjobanpreet Singh, alias Kala, brother of Honey, and another unidentified suspect were still at large in the case. The police assured the family that the third suspect, Kala, would be arrested soon. Tejpal’s cousin, Anmol, said a meeting was held with SSP Ankur Gupta and other officials, led by some prominent people, following which the family agreed for the autopsy. DSP Jaswinder Singh Dhindsa, who also met the family, said a meeting was held with the kin of the victim. They were assured that that separate teams were already formed and raids were being conducted to nab the remaining suspects. Police officials said the family had decided to perform the last rites on Wednesday. The last rites would be performed at a playground in Giddarwindi village because the deceased was a kabaddi player and he used to practice in the ground. SSP (Ludhiana rural) Ankur Gupta said five teams were conducting raids in the district and outside to apprehend Kala. Meanwhile Tejpal’s aunt, who had returned from abroad late on Monday evening, also reached his home. She landed at the Amritsar airport around 4 pm from where relatives escorted her to the village. Village resident Mani Garg said the aunt was close to her nephew. On reaching the airport, she became emotional upon seeing people who had come to receive her, as Tejpal often used to pick her up from there. The kabaddi player was shot dead on October 31 in Jagraon. Enmity of deceased’s friend Parlabh with the assailants became the reason of his murder. The victim had intervened in the fight of Parlabh during which assailants also pounced on Tejpal and shot him dead. Both circles — Ludhiana East and Ludhiana West — have surpassed all other districts in ensuring maximum lifting, bringing much relief to farmers in the region. Ludhiana East has recorded 108.12 per cent lifting while Ludhiana West has achieved 105.67 per cent — the highest figures in Punjab so far. As people started gathering, the assailants fled the scene leaving behind two motorcycles. On receiving information, the police reached the place, seized the motorcycles and began a probe. The victim, Vinod Kumar, a businessman, said he stays in the Janakpuri area. He had a factory on Tajpur Road. On Tuesday morning, when he was on the way to the factory, around 10 miscreants surrounded him outside Daman Chicken on the road. The miscreants tried to take out keys from his Honda Activa. When he protested their move, the miscreants attacked him. He ran for his life and pleaded for help from the people, after which the miscreants fled the scene. The miscreants left two of their motorcycles at the scene while fleeing. The businessman suffered serious head injuries in the incident. According to the victim, he has no enmity with anyone. The police said the man was attacked but he was not robbed or stolen. He did not recognise the perpetrators, making the incident suspicious. It was suspected that the assault was due to a personal grudge. The police were examining CCTV footage. — TNS
