The accused have been identified as Pardeep Kumar, alias Kaka, a resident of Chamia village and his two unidentified accomplices. The victim complained to the police that the accused waylaid her and her sister on July 23 late evening, assaulted, and eveteased them. A case has been registered against the accused. No arrests have been made and raids are being conducted to nab the absconding accused. The Nurmahal police also booked eight accused for outraging modesty of women. The commission has sought a detailed report from the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Kapurthala, and the Commissioner, Municipal Corporation, Phagwara. A Bench comprising the Chairperson, Justice Sant Prakash, and Member Gurbir Singh said the media reports and a viral video brought the matter to their attention. The footage showed a municipal vehicle — normally used for collecting garbage — being used to carry the body to the cremation ground. The driver in the video reportedly stated that this had been a routine practice. Taking a serious view of the incident, the commission directed both SSP and Municipal Commissioner to submit their reports at least one week prior to the next hearing, scheduled for January 27. The commission observed that transporting a human body in such a manner constituted a grave violation of human dignity and had deeply disturbed the public. Local residents expressed shock and indignation, ques- Phagwara, November 20 A day-long wave of tension that gripped Phagwara on Wednesday began to settle late in the evening after senior police officials visited the protest site and announced the arrest of one of the accused involved in the assault on Shiv Sena Punjab vice-president Inderjit Karwal and his son Jimmy (Zimmi) Karwal. The city witnessed a complete shutdown earlier in the day as hundreds of residents, joined by representatives of various political, social, and religious organisations, staged a massive dharna, demanding swift arrest in the case. The protest was triggered by a violent attack on the father–son duo late Tuesday evening, an incident that sparked outrage across Hindu organisations and local groups. Tension began to ease when DIG, Jalandhar Range, Naveen Singla, accompanied by SSP Gaurav Toora and SPs Madhvi Sharma and Gurpreet Singh, reached the dharna site and informed demonstrators that one accused — identified as Kanoj — had been arrested. The protesters agreed to lift the agitation after issuing an ultimatum to the police to apprehend the remaining suspects by Saturday, warning that a more intense agitation would begin from Sunday if the demand went unmet. FILE Speaking to the media, SSP Toora and SP Madhvi Sharma confirmed that the arrested accused was found in possession of a country-made pistol. The police have identified three primary suspects Tanish, alias Bhinda, believed to be the main conspirator; Sunil Salhotra and Kanoj. According to the FIR, the victims were intercepted near Gaushala Bazar around 6:25 pm on Tuesday by a group of armed assailants. The attackers allegedly surrounded and brutally assaulted them with the intent to kill, later firing gunshots into the air to terrorise bystanders before fleeing. The injured were rushed to the Civil Hospital, Phagwara, where senior officers remained stationed until late at night to oversee the situation. By Wednesday morning, anger had intensified across Hindu organisations, prompting a complete bandh supported by the Shiv Sena Punjab, Shiv Sena (UBT), Bajrang Dal, General Samaj Manch, and Hindu Suraksha Samiti. Markets remained closed while the police patrolled sensitive areas to ensure peace. At Gaushala Road, hundreds of activists sat on a dharna, accusing the authorities of negligence and demanding immediate arrest. Prominent leaders such as Inderjit Karwal, BJP leader Ashu Sampla, Bajrang Dal Doaba zone president Harsh Bhalla, Shiv Sena (UBT) vice-president Gurdeep Saini, and Shiv Sena, Punjab, vice-president Rajesh Palta joined the protest. Shiv Sena Punjab chairman Rajiv Tandon and state president Sanjeev Ghanouli criticised the government, alleging administrative apathy. Ghanouli also accused officers of initially downplaying the incident by denying gunfire, despite its mention in the FIR. The Bar Association, led by Advocate Ravinder Sharma, also observed a “No work day,” condemning the attack and urging prompt action. After extensive discussions, leaders suspended the dharna but reiterated their ultimatum. They cautioned that failure to do so could lead to a larger mobilisation at Hanumangarhi Temple on Sunday to chart the next phase of agitation. CCTV footages and other evidences had been collected from the site to establish the identity of all three accused. The video of the incident had gone viral on social media. The arrested accused, belonging to Moga, has been taken into custody. Two canisters (15,000 ml) of illicit liquor were being ferried by the accused, identified as Balkar Singh, resident of Rerwan, at Dharmkot in Moga. DSP Shahkot, Onkar Singh , Brar said under the Yudh Nasheyan Virudh campaign of the police, Lohian police ASI Balwinder SIngh along with a team of officials, during patrol from village Mehrajwala to village Gatta Mundi Kasu, apprehended a man on the basis of suspicion. They recovered two plastic cans of illicit liquor. An FIR Jalandhar, November 20 A nursing student died when his bike was allegedly hit by a car here last night. An unidentified person was booked for the death of the youth, who was on a motorbike near a residential colony on the Jalandhar-Nakodar road, by the Lambra police here today. Satyam Kumar, a resident of Sakarwar Tola, Bihar, who was currently pursuing a nursing degree at a college in Malsian, died allegedly after being hit by a speeding car. As per the complaint of Devraj, the deceased’s cousin and also a nursing student at Malsian, the speeding car was being driven by a woman. The complainant alleged the car entered the residential colony soon after the incident. Father-son duo dies JCT staff move HC for release of PF, ESI dues Claim funds remain pending in bike-bus collision following mill closure Our Correspondent Phagwara, November 20 A father-son duo was killed on the spot in a severe collision between a bus and a motorcycle on the Jalandhar road in Kapurthala late Wednesday evening. Following the incident, a police team reached the location and shifted the bodies to the mortuary of the Civil Hospital for the post-mortem examination. The police have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances leading to the mishap. The deceased were identified as Sarwan Singh, 65, and his son Amandeep Singh, 40, residents of Mannana village. Phagwara, November 20 A group of employees of JCT Mill, Phagwara, has approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court, seeking the release of long-pending statutory dues, including the Provident Fund (PF) and Employees State Insurance (ESI) contributions, which, they claim, remain c m y b pending following the alleged illegal closure of the mill two years ago. In a writ petition filed on Thursday, the workers contended that substantial amounts were regularly deducted from their salaries towards the Provident Fund and ESI, along with the employer’s statutory share. They submitted that despite these mandatory contributions being deposited and currently lying with the Provident Fund Trust, the funds have not been released to the affected employees, leaving hundreds of families in prolonged financial distress since the mill ceased operations. The matter came up before Justice Kuldeep Tiwari, who, after hearing initial submissions, issued a Notice of Motion to the authorities concerned. The court has sought a detailed explanation from the respondents regarding the continued withholding of statutory dues even after the shutdown of the industrial unit. The case has been listed for further proceedings on February 4 by which date the respondents are expected to file their replies. The petitioners are being represented by Advocate Karanjot Singh Jhikka and Advocate Meher Nagpal Chauser.
