Tightening noose around violators, hefty challans have been issued to 42 offenders who were caught dumping garbage in the open in areas of the city in the past two days. Mayor Inderjit Kaur and MC Commissioner Aaditya Dachalwal have directed civic body teams to keep strict vigil at different points of the city during day and night. Working on the directions of Zonal Commissioner Jasdev Sekhon, the night patrolling team issued challans to violators on the Dugri road, Maratha point near Dugri canal bridge, near Krishna Mandir in Model Town extension among other areas. The civic body officials stated that regular awareness drives were also being conducted in the city, but they are forced to 78-yr-old woman abused over petty issue Shivani Bhakoo Tribune News Service Ludhiana, November 20 A video being circulated on social media showed a 78year-old widow, a retired schoolteacher and resident of Gokul Vihar, Haibowal, being allegedly abused by her neighbour over a trivial issue. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, has raised concerns over the safety of elderly persons in the city. In the video, the neighbour and his wife are seen arguing with the senior citizen, hurling abuses at her and throwing flowerpots kept outside her house. MC TEAMS TOLD TO KEEP STRICT VIGIL Mayor Inderjit Kaur and MC Commissioner Aaditya Dachalwal have directed civic body teams to keep strict vigil at different points of the city during day and night. The civic body officials stated that regular awareness drives were also being conducted in the city, but they are forced to take strict action against violators as residents had still been dumping waste in the open. take strict action against violators as residents had still been dumping waste in the open. Meanwhile, the Mayor and MC Commissioner appealed to the residents to support the authorities in keeping the city clean by not dumping waste in the open. They stated that the drive against burning and open dumping of garbage would be further intensified and strict legal action would also be taken against the violators. The man, however, has claimed that the elderly woman was a “psycho”, staying in an unsafe house, about which he had earlier complained to the Municipal Corporation. He alleged that the woman had rented the place for “wrong activities”. He said after these activities were stopped, she began filing false complaints to “take revenge”. Meanwhile, talking to The Tribune, the old woman, Sudershan Bajaj, said she A CCTV grab of the suspects abusing the elderly woman at Haibowal in Ludhiana. was staying with her daughter in Gokul Vihar, Bari Haibowal. She recalled that in 2014-15, her neighbour, Manish Walyat, began parking two cars outside her house. For nearly a year, she did not object but later she sought intervention from neighbours, after which one of the vehicles belonging to his relative was removed. Since then, she alleged, relations between them soured and she and her daughter were being harassed regularly. On the other hand, Manish said the elderly woman was “mentally disturbed” and a habitual complainer. He admitted that he and his wife removed pots placed outside her house “in anger”, accusing her of blocking the road. He claimed that the woman cursed his children and allegedly pushed his wife, after which an MLR was conducted at the Civil Hospital. The woman denied all allegations, saying CCTV footage showed who had created the ruckus. She also alleged that her neighbour was a SAD leader and used his influence to intimidate them. Such incidents have again highlighted the vulnerability of senior citizens staying alone. Many elderly people avoid raising their issues publicly due to social stigma or fear of reprisals. Amarjit Singh (name changed), a 68-year-old senior citizen whose family stays in Canada, said he preferred staying in the country despite living alone. In case of emergency, he said, a few cousins and a 24-hour caretaker were his only support system. He visits his family abroad for a couple of months each year but they refuse to return to India. A 35-year-old man reportedly sold his house and sent his mother to an old-age home in Doraha. Though the woman has adjusted to her new surroundings and enjoys the company of friends of her age, she is unable to overcome the trauma of being abandoned by her son. Commissioner of Police Swapan Sharma said the police frequently receive distress calls from elderly citizens, most of whom request that their names and identities be kept confidential due to fear and social pressure. “We try to resolve their issues at the earliest to provide them a sense of safety,” he said. Couple attacked by bike-borne Two more land in police net in extortion case miscreants over parking dispute Mahesh Sharma Shivani Bhakoo Tribune News Service Ludhiana, November 20 A case of assault on a couple has come to light from the Bhattian area on the Jalandhar Bypass here. Bike-borne youths beat up a person standing outside a house with his wife and son. The incident was captured on a CCTV camera installed outside the house. The man and his wife were injured in the scuffle and have been admitted to a private hospital. The fight occurred over parking a tractor-trailer in the street. As per information, a person used to park sandladen tractor-trailers in the area. Many times, area residents opposed the same as parking of the vehicle led to traffic jams. Even before the incident, the suspect was stopped from parking the vehicle in the street. The injured man, Ronit Mishra, said some people in the area indulge in illegal sand mining, due to the same, tractor-trailers were often parked in the street, which leads to traffic jams. Sand is brought into the area after illegal mining. “If somebody tries to stop tractor-trailer owners from parking the vehicles, he or she will get a similar treatment,” he said. On Wednesday night also, he tried to stop the person from parking a tractor-trailer in the street. He did not say anything at that time but after some time, a biker came to the area with his companions and started creating a ruckus. According to Ronit, he was standing in the street with his wife and son when they attacked him with a rod. He got six stitches on his head. It is not an isolated incident of violence. Every day similar cases are being reported from the city, which has created a sense of fear among residents. In the past few days, many cases of crime reported from the city. A factory owner was attacked by miscreants in Sunder Nagar. Two security guards of a factory were badly injured as they tried to stop two persons from looting a pedestrian. In another incident, a video surfaced in social media in which a woman was showing robbing people with the help of her accomplice. A gym supplement seller received injuries on his head after two suspects assaulted him in a city area. Ludhiana, November 20 The Ludhiana (rural) police claimed to have arrested two more miscreants, including the key suspect, in a extortion case on Thursday.
