The police from Mehtiana police station arrested a couple and recovered a large quantity of banned pills from them during a patrol in the area. The accused have been identified as Dilawar Masih and his wife Sameena, residents of Pandori Bibi. While the Mahilpur police, during a patrol in the area, arrested Satnam Singh Rai, resident of Kalupur and recovered a huge quantity of banned pills from him. On the other hand, the Garhshankar police arrested Haman Singh of Harwan and recovered a huge quantity of banned pills from him. While the police of Hariana arrested Sajandeep Singh, alias Lambad, resident of Basi Balo and recovered a huge quantity of banned capsules from him. Similarly, the police of Bullowal arrested Manjeet Singh, resident of village Meghwal Ganjiyan, and recovered a huge quantity of liquor from him. oc ONE KILLED IN ACCIDENT Hoshiarpur: One person died in a road accident on the Hoshiarpur-Phagwara road. The police in Mehtiana have arrested Jaspreet, alias Jassi, the accused driver. Mandeep Kumar, a resident of Mahimowal village, said his father, Ram Murti, was returning home in a car. The arrests were made before the accused could carry out a serious criminal offense. Addressing the media, Senior Superintendent of Police Tushar Gupta, said under the supervision of the Superintendent of Police (Investigation), a police team led by SI Pargat Singh of the CIA Staff, Nawanshahr, was on patrol and checking suspicious persons near village Kariha. During this operation, a reliable informer hinted the police that three individuals were roaming with illegal weapons, allegedly planning to commit a serious crime. The accused have been identified as Nanish Kumar, alias Manish Kumar Neesha (34 years), Raj Kumar, alias Raja (27 years), and Sahil (25 years), district Kapurthala. The police said during a press conference, “During preliminary interrogation, the accused disclosed that they were planning to attend a Kabaddi Cup event being organised at village Karimpur. They further revealed that a person named Ram Kumar, alias Rama, a resident of Jadla, with whom they had an old rivalry, was also expected to be present at the event. The accused intended to kill him there. However, due to the timely and alert action of the police, the accused were apprehended before they could execute their plan.” Miscreant injured in police encounter near Kishangarh Our Correspondent Kapurthala, December 21 A police patrolling party came under fire from a group of armed suspects, leading to an exchange of gunfire and the injury of one accused. The incident resulted in the registration of a case under the Arms Act and the recovery of illegal weapons and ammunition by the police, Kapurthala. According to police officials, the SHO received information that around 20 persons were moving suspiciously in multiple vehicles near Kishangarh. The accused reportedly alighted from their vehicles and again opened fire at the police. The police retaliated and one accused, identified as Lakhwinder Singh, sustained a bullet injury in his leg and fell. The injured accused was taken into custody and provided medical attention. The police recovered two cartridges and one pistol from the scene, along with the vehicles involved in the incident. One dies in bike, tanker collision Talwara, December 21 One person died on the spot after a collision between a bike and a gas tanker near Adda Jhir Da Khuh on the Talwara-Hajipur road. Motorcyclist Raghuveer Singh of Adarsh Nagar, Gera village, was on his motorcycle with his brother on his way to Talwara for work. While he was travelling towards Talwara, his motorcycle collided head-on with a gas tanker coming from Talwara. The impact was so severe that Raghuveer died on the spot. The Talwara police reached the spot, took possession of the body and kept it in the mortuary of BBMB Hospital in Talwara for postmortem. Meanwhile, the police have taken the gas tanker into their custody and started further action. — OC c m y b Jalandhar, December 21 Under a campaign being run to stop child begging, the District Level Child Begging Prevention Task Force raided various places in the district on the second day today and rescued 11 children. The 11 rescued children include 10 girls. It has been after a long gap in Jalandhar that raids on this scale have been carried out by the Social Security, Women and Child Development Department. In the past two days, 21 child beggars have been rescued. So far, 16 girls and five boy beggars have been rescued in the raids. District Programme Officer Manjinder Singh said the checking campaign is being run under the ‘Jeevanjot Project’ by the Social Security, Women and Child Development Department to eradicate child begging. Singh said different teams of the Child Begging Prevention Task Force raided various places in the city, including Railway Station, Jalandhar, Jalandhar Cantt Railway Station, near Devi Talab Mandir and Pathankot Chowk, today. Apart from this, teams led by Child Development Project The Child Begging Prevention Task Force frees 11 beggars in Jalandhar. Officers also checked places in different blocks of the district. The raids were carried out by joint teams of the department and the police. He said the rescued children were given medical treatment from the Civil Hospital, after which they were presented to the Child Welfare Committee, Jalandhar. District Child Protection Officer Ajay Bharti and other officers of the department were also present on the occasion. As many as 10 children were rescued yesterday, including 6 girls and 4 boys. The res- cued children were between 6-14 years of age. Teams led by District Child Protection Officer Ajay Bharti conducted raids at various intersections, including the bus stand in Jalandhar city and various blocks of the district. District Programme Officer Manjinder Singh said to stop child begging, these raids will be carried out continuously so that Jalandhar can be made begging-free. The girls rescued in raids have been sent to the Children’s Home, Jalandhar, and the boys to a home in Ludhiana.” Speaking on why no raids had been carried out in Jalandhar despite rampant child labour in the region, Singh said, “We shall also raids against child labour.” Truck rams into stationary car, 1 dead Our Correspondent PHAGWARA, DECEMBER 21 A fatal road accident was reported late night on the Phagwara bypass near Mehta Chowk Phagwara, resulting in the death of one person and injuries to another. According to the police complaint filed by Deepak Sharma, resident of Pathankot, the complainant was travelling from Chandigarh to Pathankot in a car along with Surinder Singh, Sameer Sharda (who was driving), and Pankaj Kumar, aged 32, resident of Pathankot. The complainant stated that due to heavy fog, the group was driving cautiously on their correct side. As they reached the Phagwara, a vehicle ahead suddenly applied brakes, causing their car to sustain damage to the conductor side. While they stopped to assess the damage, a speeding truck approached from behind. Allegedly, the truck driver neither blew the horn, nor reduced speed and rammed into their stationary car from behind. The impact caused the truck to lose control and overturn near the flyover crossing. Pankaj, who was standing near the car, was by the truck and died on the spot. Sharda sustained injuries in the incident. With the help of the police, Pankaj’s body was retrieved from beneath the truck and later shifted to the Civil Hospital, Phagwara, where it was kept in the mortuary. The truck driver, however, fled the scene after the accident. The police stated that the accident occurred due to rash and negligent driving at high speed by the truck driver, posing serious danger to public safety. A case has been registered, and efforts are underway to trace and arrest the absconding driver.
The Tribune, now published from Chandigarh, started publication on February 2, 1881, in Lahore (now in Pakistan). It was started by Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, a public-spirited philanthropist, and is run by a trust comprising four eminent persons as trustees.
