Ind councillor on its side, BJP wins Mayor’s post for first time in Kerala SPECIAL TO THE TRIBUNE C Gouridasan Nair Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 26 In a historic first, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has assumed power in a Municipal Corporation in Kerala. BJP leader VV Rajesh was elected Mayor of the Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation on Friday, securing 51 votes in the 101-member council. Rajesh’s victory is symbolic of the strides that the BJP 20-yr-oldIndianpupil shot dead in Canada has made in Kerala, particularly the capital city, over the past decade. The BJP wrested 16 seats from its rivals to emerge as the single largest party in the corporation with 50 members. It had shown signs of its growing clout in the city during the 2020 corporation elections, winning 34 seats. The BJP gained additional seats mostly at the expense of the CPM-led Left Democratic Front (LDF), whose tally slumped from 51 seats in 2020 to 29 seats, losing its decades-long hold on the council. The Congress and its allies put in a better performance compared to last time, but could win only 19 seats (10 in 2020), ending up at the third place. Rajesh had a smooth sailing to the Mayor’s chair, thanks to the support extended to him by one of the two victorious independent candidates. A byelection to the council, necessitated by the death of a candidate, is scheduled to be held on January 12, but it would now be continued on page 6 VEER PUTTAR NEW DELHI: A 20-year-old Indian doctoral student was shot dead near the University of Toronto’s Scarborough campus in Canada, prompting the Indian Government to reach out to the local authorities and extend support to the bereaved family.
