In the first case, the police nabbed Ritu, a resident of Garhshankar Road in Mahindipur. On seeing the police vehicle, she allegedly threw a transparent packet into the bushes. Suspecting foul play, the police retrieved the packet, which contained 3 grams of heroin. In the second incident, the police nabbed Jaskeerat Singh of Gandhi Nagar Mohalla in Banga. The police seized 7 grams of heroin from a packet thrown by Jaskeerat. The accused has been booked under Section 21 of the NDPS Act. OC 3 AGENTS BOOKED FOR ~26L FRAUD Phagwara: The Kapurthala police have registered a case against three travel agents for cheating a local of Rs 26 lakh under the pretext of sending his son to the US. The complainant, Amarjit Singh of Chakpatti Balu Bahadur Kabirpur village, alleged that the accused took a large sum of money to send his son Jasrandeep Singh abroad, but failed to fulfil the commitment. Amarjit approached the accused — Gurinder Singh, Jagdeep Kaur, both residents of Mallian village near Tarn Taran; and Amandeep Singh, a resident of Dhirdau village near Amritsar — who claimed to arrange the US visa for his son. Trusting them, the complainant paid Rs 26 lakh. However, despite receiving the money, the accused neither sent the complainant’s son abroad nor returned the amount. OC Jalandhar and Nawanshahr police personnel hold flag marches in their respective jurisdictions on Sunday. TRIBUNE PHOTOS Tribune News Service Jalandhar, Nawanshahr, Jan 25 The Jalandhar rural and city police conducted flag marches in several areas to maintain law and order and ensure public safety on the Republic Day. The objective of these flag marches was not only to strengthen security arrangements but also to instill a sense of safety and confidence among the general public, the police said. Jalandhar Rural SSP Harvinder Singh Virk said flag marches were carried out at sensitive locations and 450 police personnel had been deployed on duty round the clock. Nawanshahr SSP Tushar Gupta said to ensure peaceful celebrations, elaborate security arrangements had been put in place. He said comprehensive multi-layered security measures had been implemented throughout the district. Flag marches were conducted on Sunday in Banga, Nawanshahr and Balachaur to demonstrate police readiness and deter anti-social elements. In addition, 11 special nakas have been set up at strategic locations across the district, with intensified checking at bus stands, railway stations and other high-footfall areas. Continuous patrolling and close monitoring of sensitive points are being ensured round the clock. SSP Gupta said adequate police force under the supervision of two SP-rank officers and seven DSPs had been deployed for the Republic Day to maintain law and order and facilitate smooth conduct of celebrations. Inspection had been carried out at hotels, dhabas and sarais to prevent any unlawful activity, he added. The police said they received a tip-off that Surjeet Singh of Sunrra Rajputan village had been extracting and selling illicit liquor from his house. ASI Gurdev Singh along with his team raided the house and nabbed Surjeet. The police seized equipment used for preparing illegal liquor, including an iron frame, a gas-operated furnace, a cylinder, a distillation setup and around 20 litres of lahan. The police said acting on a tip-off, they nabbed the woman who was selling pregabalin capsules from a fruit cart on the Nandala–Dhaliwal road. The accused has been identified as Rekha, a resident of Nandala near Subhanpur. OC Jalandhar, January 25 The property tax wing of the Jalandhar Municipal Corporation has issued notice to more than 150 owners for failing to clear their dues. Recently, The Tribune highlighted that the MC had constituted five special teams to strengthen property tax recovery. These teams have been conducting daily surveys and issuing notices to defaulters during house-to-house visits in upscale localities. Officials said more than 100 houses were being surveyed every day and several residents were depositing their property tax on the spot. The Property tax collection has gone up by ~2. 5 lakh per day. recovery drive has already begun showing results. Phagwara, January 25 A fatal road accident on the Phagwara-Jalandhar National Highway claimed the life of a person, while another sustained serious injuries after two vehicles collided head-on last evening. The impact of the crash was so severe that both the vehicles were extensively damaged, causing panic among commuters in the area. According to preliminary information received, the collision occurred when two vehicles travelling at high speed rammed into each other on the busy highway. The force of the impact left one person dead on the spot, while the other was critically injured. Passersby and local residents immediately informed the police and emergency service providers, following which an ambulance rushed the injured to a nearby private hospital for urgent medical treatment. Doctors declared one of the victims brought dead, while the condition of the injured person was reported to be serious. The body was later shifted to the Civil Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examination. The identity of the deceased is being ascertained while the injured remains under medical observation. Eyewitnesses at the scene stated that over-speeding and negligent driving appeared to be the primary cause of the accident. It is suspected that one of the vehicles may have entered the wrong lane, leading to a head-on collision. c m y b Due to the accident, traffic movement on the highway remained disrupted for a considerable period. Upon receiving information, Phagwara police reached the spot, cordoned off the area, and initiated relief and rescue operations. The damaged vehicles were removed from the road to restore normal flow of traffic. Police officials said that statements of eyewitnesses are being recorded and the exact cause of the accident is under investigation. Our Correspondent Phagwara, January 25 A 27-year-old man was found dead on the roadside near Nawan Pind Bhatthe in Kapurthala on Saturday. However, confusion prevailed over jurisdiction between the City police station and Kotwali police station, resulting in a brief delay in procedural action and shifting of the body. Later, the City police took over the case and shifted the body to the Kapurthala Civil Hospital. Investigating Officer Harjit Singh said the deceased used to work at a service station. He said Ajit Singh’s father was serving as a Home Guard and was posted at the Police Lines. The police said further action would be initiated after recording the statements of the family members of the deceased. The Investigating Officer said the actual cause of death would be determined on the basis of the postmortem examination and the report would be out anytime soon.
