According to the police and witnesses, the car was travelling at an extremely high speed from the Jalandhar side towards Ludhiana when the driver reportedly lost control on the vehicle. The car collided with the divider and veered into the opposite carriageway, where it rammed into a pickup truck. The impact was so severe that the car was completely damaged, while the pickup truck was also damaged. All three occupants of the car died on the spot due to critical injuries. They were identified as Sahil Mohammad (23), son of Kashmir Mohammad; Daljit Bhatti (20), son of Avtar Chand; and Avtar Mehmi (17), son of Des Raj Mehmi. Witness Bains, who runs a workshop along the highway, said the car appeared to be travelling at a speed exceeding 100 kmph. “Within seconds, the driver lost control, the car broke the divider and hit the truck. We rushed to help, but the car was completely crushed and the youths had already succumbed to their injuries,” he said. On receiving information, teams from the Goraya police and the Road Safety Force reached the spot and shifted the injured and the bodies to the hospital. ASI Makkar Singh of the Road Safety Force confirmed that overspeeding was the primary cause of the accident and clarified that the pickup truck driver was not at fault. The bodies have been kept at the Civil Hospital, Phagwara, for post-mortem examination. The police have initiated further investigation while reiterating appeals for strict adherence to traffic rules, especially speed limits, to prevent such tragic incidents. Protest over Latifpura eviction drive, women climb atop water tank MC snaps illegal water, sewer connections Tribune News Service Tribune News Service Jalandhar, February 10 The action by the district administration and the police on Tuesday morning against encroachments in Latifpura has sparked trouble for the government, administration and the police. The administration acted swiftly, launching the eviction drive as early as 5 am when most occupants were still asleep. The area was barricaded in advance to prevent resistance. The police collected the belongings of the occupants and shifted them to the vacant Bibi Bhani flats of the Jalandhar Improvement Trust near Maqsudan. However, by around 1 pm, about a dozen evicted persons climbed atop an overhead water tank in the grain market at Butan Mandi on Nakodar Road. A major lapse on the part of the police during the operation led to a serious situation. Most of the protesters were women who climbed to the top of the water tank, brandishing bottles of petrol, which they said they were carrying as a last resort. Those who went ahead with the protest had not even carried water or food with them. One of the protesters reportedly fell unconscious in the evening after looking down Jalandhar, February 10 Acting on the directions of the Mayor of Jalandhar Vaneet Dhir, Commissioner Sandeep Rishi, and Joint Commissioner Dr Sumandeep Kaur, the MC has intensified its drive against illegal water and sewer connections in the city. The operation was conducted along 66 Feet Road, Urban Estate Phase-1, and Urban Estate Phase-2. The enforcement team worked under the supervision of Area In-charge Rajeev Kumar, with active support from Bill Distributors Sapan Dass and Vicky Gill. During the inspection, officials identified and disconnected a total of six illegal water and sewer connections that were being operated in violation of municipal rules. As a result of the enforcement drive, Rs 2,18,500 was recovered from defaulters on the spot. The operation was carried out under the guidance of Flag Scout and Estate Officer-cum-Chief Tax Collector Ashwani Gill and Superintendent Water Rate Harpreet Walia. Officials emphasized that such drives are essential to maintain the integrity of civic infrastructure and to ensure equitable distribution of water and sewer services to law-abiding residents. He added, “The demolition drive was necessary as there had been court orders in this regard. The encroachments that had existed for years were removed, and roads and passageways that had long remained closed to the public were reopened for public use.
