A neighbour and his son, who tried to intervene, were also assaulted and critically injured. The attackers fled the scene while issuing death threats. The trouble began during a pre-wedding function on Monday night between the bride’s family and a few youths who were their distant relatives over dancing. He had been sentenced to 20 years’ in jail for the crime. While being taken to the Civil Hospital for a medical examination by a team of the Khanna police, the suspect managed to escape from police custody recently and had been at large since then. The family of the deceased held a protest outside the Salem Tabri police station alleging misbehaviour by a policeman. In 2023, when a Machhiwara youth died of drug overdose, she was arrested for supplying drugs. Later, she was released from jail and again got involved in the drug trade with her kin.
