While some schools sent students back home, the others waited for instruçtions from the administration even as worried parents started gathering outside the schools. Bomb squads and anti-sabotage teams reached YPS Mohali, Learning Paths, School 67; Manav Mangal, Phase 10; Shivalik Public School, Phase 6; Paragon Senior Secondary School, Sector 71; Infant Jesus School, Phase 11; Saint Mary’s, Phase 11; and Saint Soldier’s School, Phase 7, and combed the premises. Authorities had intimated parents about the closure due to security alert before the start of certain schools. Many parents had reached schools to pick up their children. Police teams, led by SPs, DSPs and SHOs, rushed to the schools along with antisabotage teams and bomb disposal squads. The deceased has been identified as Subhash (18), a resident of Jagatpura, Punjab. His brother, Shubham (20), has been undergoing treatment at the PGIMER. According to their brother Shivam, the two had gone to drop a friend in Maloya and were returning home around 10 pm on February 9 when the accident occurred. Subhash was riding the motorcycle, with Shubham seated pillion. Near the gaushala, an unknown vehicle reportedly hit their bike. A passer-by alerted the police, who rushed to the spot and shifted both injured youths to hospital. Subhash succumbed to injuries during treatment, while Shubham was referred to the PGIMER. MC House nod to Uproar over contaminated water supply in city areas ~18.42-cr dog pound in Sector 25-West Tribune News Service Tribune News Service Chandigarh, February 11 The city will soon get a dog pound with a capacity of 1,980 canines in Sector 25-West. A proposal for the construction of a dedicated dog pound with an estimated cost of Rs 18.42-crore was approved by the MC House today. The Supreme Court, in its order dated November 7, 2025, had directed municipal bodies to urgently identify and develop animal shelters. An affidavit filed by the UT Administration before the apex court on January 29 had assured the court of completion of the facility within the stipulated timeline of September 30, 2026. The proposed dog pound will have a capacity of 1,980 with kennels and sheds. Meanwhile, the House unanimously rejected the proposal Rejects proposal to convert 123 free parking sites into paid lots to convert 123 free parking sites into paid lots on a trial basis. Despite repeated requests by MC Commissioner Amit Kumar to convert these sites into paid parking lots at least on a pilot basis for a month, councillors cutting across party lines turned down the proposal. Chandigarh, February 11 Councillors created a ruckus over the issue of dirty water supply to different areas of the city. Congress councillors displayed posters and raised slogans during the MC House meeting. The Congress alleged that residents of Mauli Jagran, Daria, Dhanas and Sector-52 had been facing the problem of dirty water for the past many years. Mauli Jagran councillor Manoj Sonkar said there was no clean water supply in his area. Municipal Commissioner Amit Kumar said that the water sample was tested by the corporation and the report had indicated normal supply. However, people’s complaints continue, so now sampling will be done through a third party agency. Further action will be taken based on the agency’s report. The Mayor said the House had to be made paperless as a lot of money was wasted in papers. 13 challaned for polythene use Tribune News Service Chandigarh, February 11 Taking action under the ongoing Swachh Survekshan 2026 campaign, the Municipal Corporation (MC) today conducted a special drive against the use of banned polythene in Manimajra. Thirteen challans were issued to violators found using prohibited plastic materials. A cleanliness and awareness campaign was also organised at Shivalik Enclave, NAC Ward No. 6, Manimajra. Residents were sensitised to the critical importance of waste segregation at source and were educated about segregating household waste into four distinct categories — wet, dry, domestic hazardous and sanitary.
