Tribune News Service Jalandhar, February 27 In a major push to improving its worsening fiscal health ahead of the closing of the current financial year, the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) in Jalandhar has tightened its grip on errant consumers, recovering electricity dues worth Rs 379.86 crore till January this year, officials familiar with the matter said. Notably, the significant recovery made between April 2025 and January this year, comes as part of the corporation's sustained drive to clear pending dues of power defaulters across various consumer categories. Officials said consumers whose electricity bills remain unpaid for more than 60 days are counted as defaulters by the department. 48,039 connections disconnected across zone Alongside the recovery, PSPCL has disconnected around 48,039 electricity connections in the North zone. The zone covers prominent districts, including Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Hoshiarpur and Nawanshahr. When contacted, Chief Engineer Des Raj Bangar said that the department intensified its recovery campaign from January onwards. "From January, we intensified the recovery drive. We are conducting regular meetings to monitor defaulting consumers. Ahead of the conclusion of the ongoing financial year, we are targeting to reduce our outstanding amount by 25 to 30 per cent," he said. PSPCL officials maintained that the drive will continue in the coming weeks with strict monitoring and field-level enforcement to ensure higher recovery and fiscal discipline before the financial year ends. Firing incident at Nakodar bus stand creates panic Our Correspondent Nakodar, February 27 Unidentified assailants opened fire inside the busy Nakodar bus stand late on Thursday evening before fleeing from the spot after allegedly snatching a motorcycle. The incident, which occurred in the presence of commuters and shopkeepers, created chaos and raised serious questions about the prevailing law and order situation in the area. According to eyewitness accounts, the incident took place when a young man arrived at the bus stand on his motorcycle. Shortly thereafter, a few unidentified youths approached him, leading to a heated exchange. Within moments, one of the accused reportedly fired a shot in the air, triggering panic among passengers waiting for buses. People ran for cover as fear gripped the crowded premises. Taking advan- tage of the commotion, the accused allegedly snatched the motorcycle and escaped from the scene. Though no injuries were reported, the sound of gunfire at such a crowded public place left residents deeply shaken. The bus stand, which usually witnesses heavy evening rush, turned into a scene of confusion as commuters scrambled to ensure their safety. Shopkeepers immediately pulled down shutters while bystanders alerted the police. DSP Nakodar Onkar Singh Brar, SHO Harvinder Singh and other police officials rushed to the spot along with their teams and initiated an investigation. Police sources stated that CCTV cameras installed in and around the bus stand are being examined to identify the culprits. Officials have assured that raids are being conducted and the accused will be apprehended soon. Two arrested for murder bid on fuel pump staff Nakodar, February 27 The Nurmahal police have arrested two miscreants on the charge of attempted murder. Officiating SHO Amandeep Singh said that the accused have been identified as Armann Gill, a resident of Khusropur village under Jalandhar Cantt police station and Samrath, son of Tirtha Kumar a resident of Deep Nagar, Jalandhar Cantt Jagtar Singh, a resident of Jandiala village under Sadar Jamsher police station, complained to the police that the accused came to Bundala petrol pump on Goraya Road on the evening of February 24 and asked to fill the Swift car (PB-08-AA-009) petrol tank and fled without paying. The complainant said they chased and tried to stop him near Kangiwal village on Jalandhar Road. Addressing religious gatherings, he spoke about the ongoing Kar Seva for the historic Budda Dariya in Punjab. During programmes organised in Dagupan and Urdaneta, he said that Budda Dariya, once considered a lifeline, had gradually turned into a drain due to negligence and pollution. The Tribune, now published from Chandigarh, started publication on February 2, 1881, in Lahore (now in Pakistan). It was started by Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, a public-spirited philanthropist, and is run by a trust comprising four eminent persons as trustees.
The Tribune, the largest selling daily in North India, publishes news and views without any bias or prejudice of any kind. Restraint and moderation, rather than agitational language and partisanship, are the hallmarks of the paper. It is an independent newspaper in the real sense of the term.
The English edition apart, the 133-year-old Tribune has two sister publications, Punjabi Tribune (in Punjabi) and Dainik Tribune (in Hindi).
