DSP Sarwan Singh said the accused have been identified as Sewa Singh of Sadikpur village and his wife Palwindar Kaur. Kamlesh Ranni of Malsian village had complained to the Jalandhar (Rural) SSP that she had paid Rs 42 lakh to the accused for facilitating her son and daughter’s migration from Greece to Canada, but the accused did neither send them to Canada, nor return the money. — OC 2 BOOKED UNDER NDPS ACT Hoshiarpur: The Hajipur police arrested two youths found in an allegedly intoxicated condition near the Bhallowal canal bridge during a patrol. The accused, identified as Manish of Khatigarh, and Ravi Kumar of Bambowal, were taken to the Civil Hospital, Mukerian, where their dope tests reportedly turned positive. Based on the medical report, the police registered a case under the NDPS Act. Redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme at a cost of Rs 125 crore, the 110-year-old station has undergone a complete transformation. The twostorey building now features a modern design, spacious interiors and a range of passenger-friendly facilities aimed at making travel more comfortable. The biggest attraction is the nearly 100-metre long covered concourse connecting the platforms. Brightly lit and well-ventilated, the expansive walkway lends the station a modern look while enabling seamless movement between platforms. The transformation is evident from the moment passengers enter the station. Escalators and lifts have replaced the struggle of carrying luggage up staircases, while clear signboards, help desks and Automatic Ticket Vending Machines make navigation and ticket purchase easier. The waiting lounges have also been redesigned with passenger comfort in mind. The station also caters to diverse passenger needs with Our Correspondent PHILLAUR, JULY 15 Commuters using the Ladowal toll plaza on the national highway will have to shell out more from today, with the revised user fee schedule for the financial year 2026-27 coming into effect.Toll rates have been increased across all vehicle categories. However, the concession for eligible local residents has been retained, with the monthly local pass continuing at Rs 360. Toll plaza manager Vipin Rao said the revised user fee has been implemented as per the NHAI notification and was effective from today. He said the updated tariff charts have been displayed at the toll plaza and commuters are being informed about the revised rates. Another manager Deepinder Pal told The Tribune that all FASTag lanes are operating smoothly and motorists have been advised to maintain sufficient balance in their FASTag accounts to ensure seamless passage through the toll plaza. Under the revised schedule, cars, jeeps, vans and other light motor vehicles will pay ~235 for a single journey and ~350 for a return journey. The monthly pass for 50 single journeys has been fixed at ~7,815, while commercial vehicles registered within the district will continue to avail a concessional rate of ~115 per trip. Kapurthala, July 15 A Kapurthala jeweller has allegedly been cheated of ~75 lakh in a fraudulent gold transaction. The police have register a case against a Jalandhar businessman, his wife and their son and arrested the main accused, while efforts are underway to apprehend the remaining two suspects. SHO Amandeep Nahar said an FIR has been registered following a complaint by Varun Setia, proprietor of Aarti Jewellers in Kapurthala. Setia had maintained a longstanding business relationship with Harpreet Singh Luthra, owner of HS Bangles in Papadian Bazaar, Jalandhar, along with his wife and son Gurpartap Singh. The complainant alleged that the accused agreed to supply 500 gram of gold for ~80 lakh. As part of the deal, he paid ~25 lakh on January 21 followed by a bank transfer of ?50 lakh to HS Bangles’ account on January 28. The accused allegedly issued a cheque for ~75 lakh as a guarantee. However, despite receiving the payment, the accused neither delivered the gold, nor refunded the money, the complaint stated. During a visit to the station, Minister of State for Railways Ravneet Singh Bittu said the Railways is planning to develop a food plaza on the first floor, offering range of refreshments to the passengers. He said the floor has also been connected to the main entrance through a staircase, allowing office goers and visitors to access the food plaza without entering the station premises, if they do not have a train to catch. Calling maintenance the biggest challenge, Bittu said the Railways is looking for contractors with experience in managing airports or three and four star properties to ensure the facilities are maintained to high standards. The redeveloped Jalandhar Cantonment Railway Station will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 17 under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. During this, PM will also virtually inaugurate 75 redeveloped railway stations across the country. Jeweller duped of ~75 lakh, Jalandhar trader held Phagwara, July 15 Two more victims, a migrant woman and her eight-year-old daughter, died during treatment at Government Medical College, Amritsar, on Tuesday, taking the death toll in the alleged pesticide consumption case in Mallu Kadarabad village near Kapurthala to three. The woman’s younger daughter had died earlier at the Civil Hospital, Kapurthala, while her two-year-old son is under treatment. The deceased have been identified as Santosh Devi, originally from Bihar, her eightyear-old daughter Amrita, and six-year-old daughter Khushi. The incident took place on Monday night when Santosh Devi allegedly consumed poisonous pesticide along with her three children following a family dispute. Doctors at the Civil Hospital provided emergency treatment, but Khushi succumbed soon after admission. As the condition of Santosh, Amrita and the boy deteriorated, they were referred to Government Medical College, Amritsar. Santosh and Amrita later succumbed to their injuries, while the boy remains under medical care. Family members told the police that Santosh had taken the step after a minor argument with her mother-in-law. — OC Phagwara, July 15 Two youths sustained serious injuries after their motorcycle crashed into the railing of a railway overbridge and plunged off the structure in Phillaur on late Tuesday night. According to preliminary information, the two were travelling on a motorcycle from Jalandhar towards Ludhiana around 10 pm when the accident occurred on the national highway near the railway overbridge. A tipper truck had reportedly been parked on the roadside. Truck driver Mandeep said he was using a jack to replace the vehicle’s punctured tyre when the speeding motorcycle approached the overbridge. He alleged that the rider attempted to take a sharp cut, causing the motorcycle to collide with the overbridge railing. The pillion rider fell first, followed by the rider, with both plunging off the overbridge. Mandeep immediately alerted the police by calling the emergency helpline (112). With the assistance of local residents, the injured men were rescued from below the bridge and shifted by ambulance to the Civil Hospital, Phillaur. The police said both victims sustained severe injuries, with one reported to be in critical condition. They are believed to be residents of Gurdaspur district, although their identities had not been established at the time of reporting. ASI Umesh, the investigating officer, said the police reached the spot after receiving information about the incident and ensured the injured were taken to hospital. He added that the Railway Police had also been informed, and an investigation is underway to ascertain the exact circumstances that led to the accident. Our Correspondent Kapurthala, July 15 Two employees of a liquor contractor were seriously injured after a violent clash and alleged firing between the contractor’s workers and another group in Dashmesh Nagar Colony late Tuesday night. The incident also left their vehicle extensively damaged, while the police have launched an investigation to determine the sequence of events. According to the police, three bullet shells were recovered from the scene and CCTV footage from the surrounding area is being examined as part of the investigation. Liquor contractor Raman Monsoon exposes neglect of Pathankot Chowk service lane Rishika Kriti Tribune News Service Jalandhar, JuLY 15 Nearly six months after a service lane near Pathankot Chowk was dug up for laying drainage pipelines, the stretch remains in a dilapidated condition, exposing commuters to daily inconvenience and safety hazards. The onset of the monsoon has only worsened the situation. The service lane connecting Pathankot Chowk with Focal Point, Transport Nagar and Sarab Multiplex is now waterlogged and riddled with slush-filled potholes. Given its proximity to these commercial areas, the road witnesses heavy movement of trucks, buses, auto rickshaws and two wheelers throughout the day. Water hides the potholes and there is always a fear of skidding or damaging the vehicle. Despite months passing, nothing has changed,” Navneet Kaur, another resident said, “The situation becomes more dangerous after dark. The road is slippery and poorly lit at night. It becomes difficult to spot potholes, increasing the risk of accidents, especially for twowheeler riders.” Surinder Saini, a member of Jalandhar road safety committee, said, “It has been more than six months, yet the service lane remains in poor condition. There is no proper outlet for rainwater, leading to water accumulation after every shower. Several chamber covers are also missing on the stretch. I have raised the issue in every road safety committee meeting, where NHAI officials assure us that repairs will begin soon but nothing has happened.” “The road carries a large volume of heavy vehicles because of its proximity to Focal Point and Transport Nagar, putting commuters at significant risk. Who will be responsible if a serious mishap occurs?” he said. A senior NHAI official said, “I am occupied with the preparations for the PM’s visit. I will look into the matter after July 17.” Kumar alleged that his employees, Gurvinder Singh and Ninder Singh, had gone to Dashmesh Nagar Colony after receiving information about the alleged sale of illicit liquor. He claimed that while attempting to stop the illegal activity, they were attacked by a group of youths armed with sharp-edged weapons. The assailants allegedly vandalised their car and also opened fire into the air before fleeing the spot. Both injured employees were immediately shifted to the Civil Hospital, where they are undergoing treatment. Their condition has been described as serious. Bike rally against US trade deal Phagwara, July 15 Members of the Kirti Kisan Morcha Sangharsh Committee (KMSC), led by district president Sarwan Singh Baupur, on Tuesday organised a motorcycle rally to protest the proposed IndoUS trade deal. Around 200 members, riding nearly 100 motorcycles, participated in the rally, which commenced from the Grain Market in Sultanpur Lodhi and concluded at the DC’s Office complex in Kapurthala. During the protest, representatives of the organisation submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner, demanding the immediate cancellation of the proposed Indo-US trade agreement. The protesters expressed concerns over the potential impact of the deal and urged the government to withdraw it. OC
