As many as 300 capsules were recovered from his possession. OC MAN HELD FOR SELLING LIQUOR Phagwara: The Mehatpur police have arrested a villager on the charge of selling illicit country-made liquor. Nine bottles of hooch were seized from the accused Gurpreet Singh of Mehsampur. A case has been registered against the accused. OC VILLAGER HELD FOR ASSAULT Phagwara: The Lohian Khas police have arrested a villager on the charges of criminal trespass and assault. The accused has been identified as Gurmukh Singh of Ismailpur village. Jaswindar Singh of the same village had complained to the police that the some persons were forcibly ploughing his 11 kanals of land on June 11 and when he stopped them, they attacked and seriously injured him. OC Jalandhar, July 22 The CIA staff and police arrested an accused wanted in a double murder case after an encounter near Nakhan Wala Bagh here this morning. Accused Shubham, alias Gullu, has remained associated with the Joga Pholriwal gang of Jalandhar. The police have also recovered .32 bore pistol, four shells and a motorcycle. A police team had laid a special naka when an informer reported that Shubham of Dashmesh Nagar, Bhargo Camp, was travelling from Uday Nagar towards that side on a bike while carrying an illegal firearm. Gullu is also allegedly involved in extortion incidents. Gullu was signalled to stop but he attempted to turn back but lost control and fell on the roadside. The following day, his friend Rajvir was taking him to a hospital for fresh Hoshiarpur, July 22 The Anti-Narcotics Cell of the Haryana Police has seized over 10 quintal of poppy husk allegedly being smuggled from MP to Punjab and booked two residents of Garhshankar in connection with the case. The seizure was made at a naka on the GT Road near Bhaudwal Majri in Panipat district. Acting on a tip-off, a team, led by SI Pushpinder Singh, intercepted a truck coming from the Delhi side. The driver was identified as Nitish Kaushal of Malkowal Beet village in Garhshankar. The police found 41 plastic bags of poppy husk, weighing 10.33 quintal, hidden beneath 601 cartons of conditioner. The police estimated the value of the seized consignment at around Rs 35 lakh, while its retail value in Punjab is believed to be more than Rs 70 lakh. The driver claimed that both truck and poppy husk belonged to a person from Garhshankar. The police have launched raids to arrest him. The truck has been seized and the driver taken into custody. — OC Five sentenced to 12 years in Nawanshahr acid attack case Ashok Kaura Nawanshahr, July 22 In a significant judgement, the court of the Additional Sessions Judge, Nawanshahr, Aprajita Joshi has convicted and sentenced five accused to 12 years of rigorous imprisonment each for their involvement in a 2019 acid attack case. The convicts Makhan Ram, Pakhar Ram, Baljinder Kaur, Kirandeep Kaur and Gurbaksh Kaur were found guilty under Sections 326-A and 323 read with Section 149 of the Indian Penal Code in connection with FIR lodged on March 1, 2019, registered at Rahon Police Station. Bhardwaj Tribune News Service Jalandhar, July 22 A day after farmers were stopped at the Shambhu border while attempting to march to New Delhi for the Mahapanchayat, protesters staged demonstrations at toll plazas across Punjab on Wednesday on a call given by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM). Responding to a nationwide call by the SKM, farmers in Jalandhar and Nawanshahr districts allowed vehicles to pass through toll plazas free of charge from 11 am to 2 pm. The demonstration was held to oppose the proposed IndiaUS trade agreement, which, farmers fear, could have a severe impact on the agricultural sector. The Bharatiya Kisan Union (Rajewal), Jalandhar unit, held a three-hour protest by making the Cholang Toll Plaza in Adampur and the Ladowal Toll Plaza in Phillaur toll-free. Addressing a gathering, farmer leaders warned that the proposed agreement could have far-reaching consequences for the agriculture sector, particularly for farmers in Punjab. They argued that farmers would find it difficult to compete with US farmers, which, they said, could threaten the livelihoods of local farmers. The leaders urged the Centre dressing of his wounds when they were waylaid. The two had stopped outside the residence of their friend, Saurabh, in New Dashmesh Nagar when Gullu, who was allegedly riding a motorcycle, opened fire on them. Jalandhar, July 22 The Jalandhar Rural Police on Wednesday busted an illegal arms trafficking racket and arrested six persons allegedly involved in the network. The police recovered a .30 bore pistol, a magazine, and three cartridges from their possession. The six persons have been identified as Mahikpreet, alias Rohit, resident of village Borewal Kang, Majitha, Amritsar; Karandeep Singh, alias Karan, resident of Fatehgarh Churian, Gurdaspur; Robinpreet Singh, resident of village Badowal Kalan, Fatehgarh Churian, Gurdaspur; Rajeshwar Singh, resident of village Kotla Gujjran, Majitha, Amritsar; Manjit Singh, resident of village Sangatpura, Jhander, Amritsar, and Nikhil, resident of Sadar Bazaar, Amritsar. DSP Bharat Masih stated that during a special naka and vehicle checking opera- tion at Hi-Tech Naka, Sutlej Bridge, the police stopped a car bearing registration No. PB-02-ER-2316 on suspicion. The occupants of the vehicle Mahikpreet, Karandeep Singh, Robinpreet Singh, Rajeshwar Singh, Manjit Singh and Nikhil were apprehended. During the search of the vehicle, the police recovered one .30 bore pistol, one magazine, and three cartridges from their possession. An FIR has been registered under Sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act at Phillaur. Preliminary investigations revealed that the accused were allegedly procuring illegal firearms at low prices through various contacts and selling these at higher rates across different parts of Punjab. The probe further found that the recovered weapon was to be delivered in the Phillaur area. However, the police apprehended the accused before the delivery could be carried out. Truck carrying 10 quintal of poppy husk impounded Farmers hold a protest at a toll plaza near Jalandhar. to safeguard the interests of the farmers and reconsider any trade agreement that could adversely affect the sector. Prominent leaders who participated in the protest included Mandeep Singh Samra, Mukesh Chander Sharma, Major Singh Johal and several other farmer union representatives, along with a large number of farmers. In Nawanshahr, members of the Kirti Kisan Union staged a protest at the Behram Toll Plaza. Addressing a gathering, the leaders criticised the Centre, alleging that the proposed agreement would adversely affect farmers’ livelihoods. They asserted that the agitation would continue until the proposed agreement was withdrawn. “The protest marked the beginning of the SKM’s nationwide campaign against the proposed free trade agreement launched today,” farmer leader Tarsem Singh said. Farmer leaders appealed to people from all sections of society to join the movement. During the protest, the leaders also raised several other demands. They urged the Punjab Government to ensure canal water reaches every farm and provide clean canal water for drinking to every household. They also demanded the withdrawal of policies that, they alleged, would facilitate corporate control over water resources. They sought a legal guarantee for the procurement of all crops, fruits, vegetables and basmati at the MSP based on the C2+50 per cent formula. Kapurthala, July 22 Two sisters were allegedly robbed at sword point by three armed assailants. They were taking a walk along the Kali Bein in Sultanpur Lodhi of Kapurthala district. The motorcycle-borne robbers reportedly fled with around four tolas of gold jewellery, triggering panic in the area. The victims have been identified as Baljit Kaur and Kulwinder Kaur. Baljit Kaur had come to visit her sister Kulwinder and, on the advice of family members, the two had gone for an evening walk along the Kali Bein. During their walk, they noticed three youths moving around the area. A short while later, they allegedly arrived on a motorcycle, intercepted the sisters and blocked their path. The victims said they attempted to flee but fell on the ground in panic. One of the assailants allegedly held a sword to their neck while the other two removed the gold ornaments they were wearing. The stolen valuables included gold chains, rings, earrings, and other jewellery. Police officials said the matter has been taken up for investigation. CCTV footage from the crime scene and surrounding areas is being examined, while technical evidence is also being collected to identify the accused. c m y b Court imposes a fine of ~20,000 of motive. However, the court rejected these arguments, holding that the testimony of the injured victim was reliable, consistent and sufficient to establish the guilt of the accused beyond reasonable doubt. The court sentenced each convict to 12 years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ~20,000 on each. The fine, amounting to a total of ~1 lakh, has been directed to be paid as compensation to the victim. The court also noted that the complainant had already received interim compensation of ~3 lakh during the trial and referred the matter to the District Legal Services Authority, Nawan- shahr, for consideration of additional compensation under the NALSA compensation scheme for women victims/survivors of sexual assault and other crimes, in accordance with the applicable legal provisions. In its observations, the court emphasised that the compensation in acid attack cases should take into account not only the physical injuries suf- fered by the victim, but also the lifelong impact on her dignity, quality of life and psychological well-being. The judgment described acid attacks as heinous crimes that inflict lasting trauma on victims while creating fear and insecurity in society, underlining the judiciary’s responsibility to ensure justice and adequate rehabilitation for survivors.
