Officials said the restrictions were imposed following directions from the Power Controller (PC), Patiala. The cuts are not limited to Jalandhar and have been introduced in the rural areas across several parts of Punjab to manage the increased load on the power grid. The restrictions are primarily being applied to agriculture and rural domestic feeders, while urban areas and industrial consumers have largely remained unaffected. Earlier, on July 16, the PSPCL had considered imposing power cuts on large industrial consumers during night hours Woman found dead, husband arrested Kapurthala, July 18 The police have arrested the husband of a 26-year-old woman who was found dead under suspicious circumstances at her matrimonial home in Razapur village near Kapurthala. Three other members of his family have also been booked in connection with an alleged dowry death case. The accused have been identified as Hardeep Singh, alias Jaggu, alias Gagan (husband), Baljit Kaur (mother-in-law), Jasvir Kaur (sister-in-law) and Bachittar Singh (brother-in-law). While Hardeep has been arrested, the police said, while efforts are underway to apprehend the remaining accused. The case was registered on the complaint of the victim’s mother, Balwinder Kaur, of Sarai Khas village. According to the FIR, her elder daughter, Simranjit Kaur, had been married to Hardeep since September 17, 2021. She alleged that despite spending beyond her means on the marriage, her daughter was repeatedly harassed and physically assaulted by her husband and his family over their persistent demand for a car as dowry. The police said allegations in the FIR were based on the complainant’s statement. The exact cause of Simranjit’s death would be determined during probe, the police added. — OC Rural domestic consumers are facing power cuts of nearly four hours. until 4 am. Officials said restrictions imposed on some industrial feeders in Jalandhar were also lifted within 10 minutes of being implemented. On Friday night, power cuts were imposed on select rural feeders between 10.30 pm and midnight. Fresh directions issued on Saturday ordered another round of cuts between 2.30 pm and 4 pm. PSPCL officials attributed the restrictions to a sharp increase in electricity demand due to the ongoing heatwave. Temperatures in the region have touched nearly 45°C in recent days, leading to higher consumption as residents rely more on air conditioners and coolers, particularly during the night hours. The surge in demand has placed additional pressure on the power system, forcing the corporation to regulate supply in some areas. Bharatiya Kisan Union (Doaba) president Manjit Singh Rai said the power situation had improved over the past few weeks, but the return of cuts had raised concerns among farmers. “The corporation had assured us of eight hours of uninterrupted power supply. With rainfall expected to remain below normal this season, farmers are dependent on tubewells for irrigation. Power cuts at this stage could affect paddy cultivation, as farmers cannot afford to operate diesel pumps regularly,” he said. Gulshan Chutani, Deputy Chief Engineer, PSPCL, said Jalandhar’s power demand had risen to nearly 900 MW. “We are not imposing cuts on urban and industrial feeders. Restrictions are mainly being applied to agriculture feeders for around one-and-a-half hours. While some feeders are receiving eight hours of supply, rural domestic consumers are facing cuts of nearly four hours,” he said. Six aides of foreign-based gangster Jagga arrested in Sultanpur Lodhi firing case DC takes charge as Kapurthala MC Administrator Kumar and Sultanpur Lodhi SHO Sub-Inspector Davinderpal Singh were constituted to identify and apprehend those involved. Using technical surveillance and human intelligence, the police arrested Amit Singh of Desal village, Harmanroop Singh and Jasmanpreet Singh, both residents of Tibba village, Jagdeep Singh of Toti village, and two juveniles, all allegedly involved in the incident. The police said a country-made pistol allegedly used in the firing and two motorcycles used in the commission of the crime were recovered from the accused. During the investigation, the police found that the attack had allegedly been orchestrated by foreign-based gangster Jagdeep Singh, alias Jagga Phukiwal, a native of Shahjahanpur (Phukiwal) village under the Sultanpur Lodhi police station jurisdiction. According to the police, Jagga later claimed responsibility for the incident on social media and has now been named as an accused in the case. SP (Detective) Harinder Singh Gill said Jagga allegedly operates from abroad, using a network of local associates to gather intelligence and carry out extortion activities. Kapurthala, July 18 Days after the Punjab and Haryana High Court heard a challenge to the Kapurthala mayoral election, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Akash Bansal has assumed the additional charge of Administrator of the Municipal Corporation (MC), Kapurthala. Soon after taking charge, Bansal convened a meeting with Municipal Corporation officials to review the progress of ongoing development works across the city. He directed officials to ensure the timely execution of projects and the efficient delivery of civic services. Appealing to residents to actively report civic issues, Bansal urged them to contact the District Administration’s helpline at 01822233777 to report potholes, sanitation issues or any other public grievances. Our Correspondent Kapurthala, July 18 The Kapurthala police have arrested six alleged associates, including two juveniles, of foreign-based gangster Jagdeep Singh, alias Jagga Phukiwal, in connection with an extortion and firing incident outside a Barista Café in Sultanpur Lodhi. The police have also recovered a country-made pistol and two motorcycles allegedly used in the crime. Addressing the media, SP (Detective) Harinder Singh Gill and Sultanpur Lodhi DSP Dhirendra Verma said that on June 21, the owner of the Barista Café received an extortion demand of Rs 15 lakh through a WhatsApp call from a foreign number. After the café owner refused to pay, unidentified assailants allegedly opened aerial fire outside the café to intimidate him. Responsibility for the incident was later claimed through a social media post. Based on the complaint, the Sultanpur Lodhi police registered an FIR on June 24 under the Arms Act and other relevant provisions before launching an investigation. Four accused, including two juveniles, have been apprehended. The police also recovered two sharp-edged weapons, including a khanda and two datars, besides the Suzuki Brezza car allegedly used in the crime. Addressing the media, SP (Detective) Harinder Singh said according to a complaint lodged by Bhajan Singh, the incident occurred on the night of July 15. Around 8 pm, his son Gurmeet Singh and nephew Harpreet Singh were standing outside their house along the roadside when a black Suzuki Brezza (registration number PB09-AS-0441), allegedly driven at high speed by a juvenile with Satvinderjit Singh, alias Gaurav, of Raipur Pir Bakshwala as a copassenger, sped past them, splashing muddy water from roadside potholes onto Gurmeet’s clothes. A brief argument reportedly ensued between Gurmeet and the occupants of the vehicle. The SP said about an hour later, the juvenile driver and Satvinderjit allegedly returned with Jaswinder Singh, alias Karan, of Dala village and another juvenile. They allegedly intercepted Gurmeet near Theka Adda Mundi Mor and attacked him with sharp-edged weapons. According to the investigation, the juvenile driver struck Gurmeet with a khanda, while Satvinderjit and the second juvenile also assaulted him with sharp-edged weapons. Karan allegedly hit Gurmeet with a brick, resulting in his death. Based on the statement of the deceased’s father, Bhajan Singh, the Begowal police registered an FIR under charges of murder and other relevant provisions of the law. Special teams led by Bhulath DSP Gagandeep Singh and Begowal SHO Sub-Inspector Dilbag Singh were constituted to trace the accused. The police also recovered two datars, one khanda and the Suzuki Brezza allegedly used in the crime. c m y b Phagwara, July 18 A youth from Mohalla Gobindpura in Phagwara was allegedly abducted, assaulted and forced to transfer money at gunpoint after being taken to a house in nearby Mauli village. The victim was later admitted to the Civil Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment. According to the victim, Jair Ram, who works at a laboratory near Vishal Mega Mart, three youths known to him through a common acquaintance approached him on Saturday evening and asked him to accompany them outside. Trusting them, he went along. Jair Ram alleged that the trio first took him to a café near the bus stand. However, claiming the place was too crowded, they instead drove him to a house in Mauli village. Once inside, the accused allegedly assaulted him with pipes without any provocation. He further alleged that the assailants threatened him with a pistol and forced him to arrange money. Acting under duress, Jair Ram contacted an acquaintance and had Rs 10,000 transferred to a bank account specified by the accused. Lawyers to decide location of new judicial complex Tribune News Service Jalandhar, July 18 The District Bar Association (DBA), Jalandhar, will hold voting on Monday to select the site for the proposed new judicial complex, lawyers’ chambers and Mini Secretariat. The polling will be conducted from 9 am to 4.30 pm at the District Bar Association premises. The DBA has also declared the day as a “No work day”. According to a media release issued by the DBA office-bearers, all eligible members of the association will be entitled to exercise their voting rights. Each member will be provided a ballot paper listing five proposed sites and will have to mark only two preferences. Members must write ‘1’ against their first choice and ‘2’ against their second choice. Only these two preferences will be considered valid. The release further stated that if any member marks more than two preferences, only the first two choices will be taken into account, while the remaining preferences will be ignored. The five proposed sites are — the existing Judicial Complex, Civil Lines; Kot Kalan village; the area behind Bath Castle; Bhagwanpur village near Wonderland; Pholriwal village adjoining Beas Satsang Ghar; and Nangal Shama village on the Hoshiarpur road. To ensure that the voting process is conducted in a fair, transparent and peaceful manner, District Bar Association president Aditya Jain and secretary Rohit Gambhir have constituted a voting management committee. The DBA has appealed to all its members to participate in the voting process in large numbers. Aditya Jain said the decision would be crucial for the future of Jalandhar’s judicial system and the legal fraternity in the years to come.
