Both of them were caught by the police during a naka at T-Point of Bichohi Tajewal village when they were bringing sand in their two tractor-trailers. They could not produce any permit or other documents regarding sand. The police arrested them and registered a case against them under the Mining Mineral Act. OC JAWAN DIES IN ROAD MISHAP Hoshiarpur: A soldier on leave died in a road accident near village Khanpur near Mukerian on the JalandharJammu National Highway. Vinod Kumar, a resident of Naushahra Nal Banda village, told the police that he along with his friend Maninder Singh had gone to Uchhi Bassi to drop latter’s aunt on a motorcycle. While returning, Maninder’s motorcycle rammed into a van, which was being driven recklessly, near Khanpur village. Maninder was badly injured and taken to a local hospital. He we referred to the Sainik Hospital, Pathankot, where he died. The van driver fled the spot after the accident. Based on the above statement, the police have registered a case against the unidentified driver. OC SNATCHING BID FOILED, 3 CAUGHT Hoshiarpur: Alert residents of Bains Aban village near Tanda on Thursday evening succeeded in getting hold of three persons, who were fleeing on a motorcycle after snatching a mobile phone from a man. They were handed over to the police. Dharampal, a resident of Bains Aban village, told the Tanda police that when he was talking on his mobile phone on the street outside his house, when three youths on a motorcycle snatched his phone from behind and fled. When he raised an alarm, some villagers chased the suspects and intercepted them near Nathupur village. The accused were identified as brothers Gurwinder Singh, alias Bhinda, and Amritpal Singh, alias Abhishek, of Kot Khaira village, and Bunty Singh of Dakoha in Gurdaspur. Having served in Jalandhar for over three years since the start of Covid pandemic, Deputy Commissioner Ghanshyam Thori got transferred on Thursday. His position has been taken by Jaspreet Singh, a 2014-batch IAS officer, who recently served as Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) in Jalandhar and was last posted as Deputy Commissioner in Mansa. Thori will be remembered in the city for his exposé in handling Covid-related malpractices, improving the plight of Niku Park, which was in a shambles, and ensuring Suwidha Kendra functioned optimally. Pay ~18L for selling defective car, firm told Tribune News Service Jalandhar, July 7 Taking account of manufacturing defects in a new car sold to a city-based advocate by Tata Motors through its dealer Aakriti World on the Police Line Road, the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, Jalandhar, in its recent judgment directed the company to pay Rs 18.43 lakh to the former, along with the charges spent for the RC. The complainant was also entitled to get Rs 50,000 as compensation and litigation expenses. Advocate RK Bhalla of Basti Sheikh here had approached the commission in September last year, complaining that he had purchased Tata Harrier from Aakriti World on August 28, 2020. However, immediately after the purchase, he found whenever he applied brakes, a screeching sound emanated from the vehicle. He said after the company failed to resolve his issue, he got the vehicle checked from an expert of Dr BR Ambedkar National Institute of Technology, Jalandhar, who compared the intensity of Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) of his vehicle with another Tata Harrier, and observed a manufacturing defect, which might have affected the performance of the vehicle future. He said he paid Rs 35,000 to the experts for the examination report. Consequently, advocate Bhalla, approached the commission and served a legal notice on the company. In its reply, the company stated that there was no such problem in the car. Subsequently, after examining all facts, a report of the expert and statements of both parties, the forum declared that there was a deficiency in service. Hence, the complainant was entitled to receive complete refund of the car. The firm will also have to pay the litigation charges to the victim. Jalandhar, July 7 With the appointment of New MC Commissioner Devinder Singh, who replaces Deepshikha Sharma, councillors are hopeful of some progress in the LED project scam. Deepshikha had been on medical leave and several meetings were being held without her, which, as per councillors, was affecting the outcome of the meetings as they were not getting required answers. While councillors and the Mayor met several times in the past, the MC Commissioner, who is also the CEO of the Smart City Mission, Jalandhar, remained absent. So, no action has yet been taken against those involved in the alleged scam. We need CEO of the Smart City project to be present at the meeting to clear our doubts, otherwise, like previous held meetings, there will only be talks, but no results,” he had said. Tribune News Service Jalandhar, July 7 A whopping 130 cases of snake bites were reported in Kapurthala in April alone! With 130 cases in April and 72 in May, the snakebite incidents have registered a steep hike this year so far. As many as 509 cases of snakebites were reported in Kapurthala last year. However, 282 cases have been reported until May this year. Last year, the most number of snakebites were reported in March (60), followed by February (56) and June (54). This year, of the 282 total cases so far, 130, the highest, were reported in April, fol- lowed by 72 in May, 42 in March and 21 in February. Last year, there were two deaths and 161 victims were admitted to the hospital. This year, there have been 62 hospitalisations so far, but no deaths. Kapurthala Civil Surgeon Dr Gurinderbir Kaur today asked residents to exercise caution in view of the increasing number of snake bites. Issuing a detailed advisory, she asked people not to resort to myth-mongering or seeking advice from witchdoctors in the eventuality of a snake bite and to rely only on medical help. She said of over 50 species of venomous snakes in the 509 incidents reported in district last year, 282 until May this year country, three are found in the state — Cobra, Russell’s Viper and Krait. The deceased has been identified as Balveer Singh, a resident of Ram Vihar near Nahla village, in Jalandhar. The fee for each player is fixed at Rs 750 per event and players can register their names by July 28,” he said. Khanna added that no entry would be accepted without the entry fee receipt. “All players participating in the tournament are required to bring their age certificate.
