Investigating officer Amrik Lal said the accused has been identified as Narindar Singh, a resident of Nurmahal. The accused is wanted in a case of murder registered on January 13, 1998. OC TWO HELD FOR DRUG PEDDLING Phagwara: The Shahkot police have arrested two 'drug peddlers' on the charge of selling heroin. As much as 52 gram of heroin was recovered from the possession of the accused Mangat Singh of Chak Bahmannia village, and Manjit Singh of Bhoyepur village. A case under Sections 21/61/85 of the NDPS Act has been registered against the accused. The administration came into action mode. An alert was immediately sounded to all departments regarding activating emergency services. A blackout was ordered for 45 minutes between 1:45 am to 2:30 pm. Sirens were also blared at some locations. However, the night passed out peacefully. Unlike Amritsar where debris of missiles were found this morning at some locations, no such remnants were reported from any place in Jalandhar. Not just the administration, even some residents remained awake in panic. Hostellers of a private univer- sity in Jalandhar also reportedly made a video of a lit-up flying object in the night which got viral on social media. The students of the varsity said they got so scared after capturing the video that they could barely study for their examination or sleep in the night. The PIB release issued this afternoon confirmed that Jalandhar, Adampur (which has Indian Air Force base) and Kapurthala were the military targets by Pakistan drones and missiles. It also mentioned that these were neutralised by the air defence systems and the debris of the same were being recovered from some locations proving the attacks. Meanwhile, an object that fell on the rooftop of a house at Ghagwal village of Hajipur between May 6-7 night is learnt to be a part of a Chinese drone. Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Aggarwal did not share any details. He, however, confirmed that a blackout was imposed in the night for less than an hour. Stay alert against rumours: DC Hoshiarpur, May 8 Residents should be alert against rumours and ensure strict compliance with the advisory issued by the government from time to time in the public interest. If any mischievous elements were found spreading rumours, strict action will be taken against them. DC Ashika Jain said this addressing a meeting to review the civil defence preparedness in the district today. The DC issued guidelines to officers and asked them to be fully alert during any emergency situation. Late in the night, Jalandhar too witnessed a half an hour precautionary blackout, from about 2 am onwards. Information began circulating late on Wednesday night about blasts heard in Amritsar. Between 1.30 am and 2 am, several social media handles began posting videos. A barrage of videos from Pakistan handles also indulged in disinformation posting unverified videos of attacks and blasts in Amritsar. Shortly after, purported videos of a glowing object having been seen in the Jalandhar sky also began to be shared on social media. A regional news channel even posted that sound of blasts was heard in Amritsar (Fatehgarh Churian), Mukerian, Bhogpur among other places. While reports were circulated that a blackout was being put in place at Amritsar, minutes after this, a power cut was also imposed in Jalandhar, which remained for 20 to 30 minutes after which power was resumed. In several areas, the power cut persisted for a longer time. It was in the afternoon on Thursday that formal confirmation was received from the Ministry of Defence that on the night of May 7, Pakistan had attempted to engage a number of military targets in Northern and Western India which included Pathankot, Amritsar, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Adampur, Bathinda and Chandigarh. Citizens reported hearing three loud explosions, after which the power supply was immediately snapped. The explosions were heard near the Maqsudan area. Until the filing of this report, a blackout remained in place in Jalandhar. c m y b Phagwara, May 8 Members of Bar Associations of different cities today observed “No Work Day” to pay tribute to murdered lawyer Sanjeev Kumar. Hundreds of lawyers, including Phagwara advocates Lalit Chopra, Vijay Sharma, Munish Sareen, Ravinder Sharma, Anita Kaura and Kumud Azad condoled the death of advocate Sanjeev. Several lawyers attended his funeral today. A prayer meeting was also held at different places. Earlier, three-member team of Medical Officers conducted the postmortem examination of advocate Sanjeev and his friend Anjupal in the Civil Hospital, Phagwara, on Wednesday and the police handed over the bodies to their families. — OC received on landline number 0181-2224417. Anyone who is an adult is welcome”, said Dr Aggarwal. Meanwhile, the Adampur Civil Airport, where flights were cancelled for two days, has been indefinitely closed now. The authorities said on Thursday that the civil airport would remain non-functional till further orders. As another precautionary measure, the staff of the Food and Civil Supplies Department on Thursday visited D Mart Supermarket where the staff were told not to allow bulk purchase of grocery items. Bholath lineman electrocuted Phagwara, May 8 A lineman with Punjab State Power Corporation Limited was electrocuted while performing maintenance work in Khassan village of Kapurthala district on Wednesday. The deceased, identified as Dalvir Singh, was stationed at the Bholath Powercom office and was reportedly conducting repairs when he came into contact with a live wire. The electric shock was so severe that his arm sustained major burns from the elbow downward. Singh remained perched on the electric pole following the incident, where he succumbed to his injuries. Singh, a resident of Issar Buche village, was due to retire next year, according to police sources. The Bholath police reached the site on receiving information and took the body into custody. — OC 3 ‘drug peddlers’ nabbed with 400g heroin in Kapurthala Our Correspondent Phagwara, May 8 In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, the Dhilwan police arrested three persons with 400 gram of heroin. The accused have been identified as Aman Malik of Chatiwind, Amritsar, Gurpreet Singh, alias Gopi, also a resident of Amritsar and Sandeep Sharma, alias Lovely, from Jalandhar. SSP Kapurthala, Gaurav , Toora said the arrests were made during a routine vehicle inspection on the Amritsar-Jalandhar road. Sub-Inspector Dalwinder Bir Singh, along with his team, was conducting checks when they received a tip-off about the consignment of heroin being transported in a white car. Upon spotting the vehicle, the police attempted to stop it, but the suspects tried to flee. After a brief chase, the car was intercepted and both suspects were apprehended. A thorough search of the vehicle led to the recovery of 400 gram of heroin concealed in an envelope. Following their arrest, the police secured their remand and began interrogation. During investigation, the suspects revealed the identity of their alleged associate — Sandeep Sharma, alias Lovely, from Jalandhar, who was reportedly meant to receive the heroin. Based on this information, Sharma was also arrested. DSP Bholath, Karnail , Singh confirmed the arrests and stated that all three accused are currently on a two-day police remand.
