The only greenbelt in the area has turned into a scrap yard now and is causing inconvenience to the locals living nearby. The situation at other police chowkis or police stations in the district is no different as scrapped vehicles, covered in dust and ruins, are simply jostling for space and giving hard time to those visiting police stations. Police officials say in several cases owners of these vehicles never turn up, therefore, they have no option but to keep the vehicles in the custody as long as the trial goes on or until the court grants permission to release them. Moreover, as they do not have a separate yard or parking lot for these vehicles, they have been compelled to keep it either on the road or park or whatever empty space they have near the police stations. According to information, Sukhwinder Singh, a resident of Tajpurkalan, told the police that when he was near Nikkiwal village, he stopped on the road side to give way to a tempo. During this, a car driver passing by allegedly tried to run over him with the intention of killing him. He was injured and taken to a hospital in Bhunga from where he was referred to Hoshiarpur. The Police have registered a case against the accused car driver, Bhulla Singh, a resident of Nikkiwal. OC BURGLARS STRIKE AT GOVT SCHOOL Phagwara: The Nakodar Sadar police have booked some unidentified persons on the charge of stealing electronic gadgets from a government school. Vehicles on fire outside a police station in Kapurthala on Tuesday. 35 bikes, 12 cars burnt outside police station Tribune News Service Kapurthala, February 28 As many as 25 motorcycles and 12 cars parked outside the Subhanpur police station as court case properties accidentally caught fire and got completely charred on Tuesday. The incident occurred around 3:30 pm and there are reports that some short circuit in electricity wires and a transformer nearby led to sparks which caused fire. Several blasts were heard from the spot which led to panic in the area. Three fire brigade vehicles were immediately pressed into action from Kapurthala and Kartarpur and the teams had to work hard to douse the flames. Jalandhar, February 28 A US-based NRI, who was in Jalandhar to spend time with his family, faced an assault and it took the police full one month to lodge a case. The matter was brought before the media by former BJP minister Manoranjan Kalia. On January 27, assailants chopped off 36-yearold NRI Amit’s two fingers from the left hand with a sword. He underwent surgeries but his fingers remain stiff. His elder brother Puneet, who resides in Rama Mandi, too was attacked with the sword on his back, but he escaped without any major injury. Father of Amit and Puneet, Gurbax Puri, who, too, is a US citizen, alleged: “We had been visiting the police staff for getting a case lodged for the past one month. Officials of the City police station recovered 80 gram of intoxicating powder after arresting Gagandeep and Rohit Sharma, residents of Bahadurpur. In another case, the police arrested Kurban Mattu, alias Telu, a resident of Bahadurpur, and recovered 10 gram of heroin and 18 sedative injections from his possession. In yet another incident, the city police arrested Arun Kumar and Yashpal, both residents of Bahadurpur, and recovered 50 bottles of liquor from them. During a naka in the area, Garhshankar police arrested Amit Kumar, a resident of Pansariyan mohalla in Garhshankar, and recovered 105 gram of intoxicating powder from him. Tanda police arrested Salim, alias Gera, a resident of Salempur, and recovered 15,000 ml of liquor from him. Mukerian police stopped a car during a naka and recovered 3.60 lakh ml of liquor from the vehicle. We need to look into that as well.” — TNS Vicky Kalia’s son surrenders in court Jalandhar, February 28 On the run for the past several months, Anshuman Kalia, son of former Congress councillor Sushil Vicky Kalia, who had committed suicide a month back, surrendered in the district courts here on Monday. Anshuman is facing a case of misuse of government grants. His father, who was a close aide of Jalandhar North MLA Bawa Henry, too had been facing the same case. While Vicky Kalia had got the bail, his son could not secure it for himself. As Anshuman appeared in the court on Monday, the Division No. 8 police sought his five-day remand but the court granted only a day’s remand. He was again made to appear today and the police sought extension of his remand. But the court sent Anshuman to judicial custody. His bail application is learnt to be pending in the Punjab and Haryana High Court tomorrow. — TNS
