The incident came to light late Saturday night after Amrik fell ill at the Jalandhar bus stand. He was rushed to the Civil Hospital by some passersby, where he breathed his last. As per the police, Amrik consumed some poisonous substance during his Facebook live. They said the family members of the deceased had no idea how he reached Jalandhar and from where he took the bus. “He was sit- INBRIEF MAN HELD FOR RAPE ATTEMPT Hoshiarpur: The Sadar police arrested a man on the charge of attempting a minor by entering her house forcibly. The victim complained to the police that on March 10 she was alone at her house. During this, Pawan Kumar, a resident of Salwara village, forcibly entered her house. She told that the accused allegedly started indecent acts with her. When she opposed, the accused tore her clothes with the intention of raping her. The victim told the police that on hearing her cries neighbours came to her house and pulled her out of the accused’s clutches. Although the accused was overpowered by the people, but he dodged them and ran away. The police, after registering a case against him under Sections 452, 376 and 511 of the IPC, arrested him. Depressed, man ends life Nawanshahr, March 12 A 33-year-old man allegedly committed suicide in Nawanshahr on Saturday by consuming an intoxicant. Deceased Gurpreet Singh of Nawanshahr was reportedly depressed. His mother Baljinder Kaur, in a complaint to the police, alleged his son was mentally tortured by his wife Jaspreet Kaur and another person, Krishan Lal. A case under Section 306 (abetment to suicide) was registered against the accused. Investigation Officer Surinder Kumar said the accused were arrested after the FIR was lodged. — TNS Body of newborn found in dump Tribune News Service Nawanshahr, March 12 A body of a newborn baby was found near a garbage dump in Rahon, Nawanshahr. The incident was reported on Saturday morning when the residents noticed the body wrapped in a piece of cloth. The police were then informed about the incident. A case has been registered against an unknown person under Section 315 of the IPC. Mahinderpal, the vice-president of the Rahon Municipal Council, in his statement to the police said that at around 7.15 am, while he was on his way to the temple, he noticed In high spirits the body. In another case, Raje Das lodged a complaint with the Tanda police that travel agent Ashok Kumar and his wife Santosh Kumari, residents of Harsi Pind, had cheated him of Rs 8.50 lakh on the pretext of sending him abroad. He said after taking the said amount from him, the accused neither sent him abroad nor returned his money. The police have started further action after registering the cases. In a separate case, Gurmeet Singh, a resident of Gera village, had lodged a complaint with the Hajipur police that they had promised to send his son to the US, Jung Bahadur and his father took Rs 15,50,000 from him. But after this, the accused neither sent his son abroad nor returned his money. On the basis of the complaint, the police have started the investigation after registration of a case against the duo. Jalandhar, March 12 A man caught with intoxicating tablets was found to be the thief behind numerous theft cases in the Kartapur area. Half a dozen theft cases were pulled off in the Kartarpur area by the nabbed thief who said he was carrying out thefts to his addiction to drugs. The police said on March 11, during a patrol, Balwinder Singh of Malna Mohalla in Kartarpur was arrested with 70 intoxicating tablets. Two theft cases were registered against them at the Gorya police station in Jalandhar. — TNS Free assistive devices given to 475 needy persons Glaucoma week begins, but no Tribune News Service MPs SEECHEWAL, HARBHAJAN CONTRIBUTE FROM MPLADS FOR NOBLE CAUSE Jalandhar, March 12 MP Balbir Singh Seechewal today distributed free-of-cost assistive devices among as many as 475 differently-abled people here at a distribution camp organised by the district administration in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, ALIMCO, Mohali, and the Department of Social Security and Women and Child Development. In a one-of-its-kind mega camp to extend aid to diffrently-abled persons, as many as 925 assistive aids and appliances, including motorised tricycles, tricycles, folding wheel chairs, crutches, walking sticks, rolletors, hearing aids, smart canes, artificial limbs and calipers, were distributed among the needy. Differently-abled people with the devices given to them at a distribution camp in Jalandhar. Seechewal said these assistive aids and appliances would facilitate the differently abled to carry out their routine chores smoothly. He added the state government stood by them and his doors are open round the clock for such a noble cause. However, the eye department in the Phagwara Civil Hospital has no tonometer, a device to check the eye pressure of glaucoma patients. Eye surgeon Anita Dadra said she had already submitted the requirements before the authorities concerned. The 140-bed Civil Hospital, which includes the 30-bed Mother-Child Care Centre, has been grappling with a shortage of doctors and medical equipment for the past several months. SMO Dr Lehmber Ram said he has written to senior officials and demanded two computers with printers, an airconditioner for the waiting area, ten chairs for doctors, five ACs for the OPD, six stetho- scopes, 10 pulse oxymeters, six weighing machines, four ECG machines, five defibrillators, five fridges and 10 surgeon’s scissors, among other equipment. At present, the hospital does not have a chest specialist, cardiologist, oncologist, nephrologist, ENT specialist and urologist. The SMO admitted that 14 posts of Medical Officers and 40 posts of medical and para-medical staff are lying vacant. Most patients visiting the Civil Hospital are being referred either to private hospitals or to Jalandhar, Kapurthala or Ludhiana for treatment. The Civil Hospital has no sweeper and driver. Around 450 patients are being examined and treated daily at the Civil Hospital.
