The suspect, identified as Harkiran Kaur, a resident of Kular village, is still at large. The victim told the police that he gave the amount to the woman to send him abroad on May 7 last year. Despite repeated assurances, the woman neither sent him abroad nor returned his money. The complainant alleged that whenever he demanded his money back, the suspect started threatening him. No arrest has been made so far. OC UNIDENTIFIED CAR DRIVER BOOKED Phagwara: The Nakodar city police have booked an unidentified car driver on the charges of causing death by negligence and rash driving. Punit Kaur, a resident of Rama Mandi, Talwandi Sabo tehsil, Bathinda, in her complaint to the police, alleged that her father Om Parkash was returning after purchasing some eatables at Nakodar on March 21 when an unidentified car driver hit him, leading to his death. Investigating officer Bhajan Singh said a case under Sections 304-A, 279, 337 and 338 of IPC had been registered against the unidentified car driver. OC WOMAN PO LANDS IN POLICE NET Phagwara: The Nurmahal police have arrested a woman proclaimed offender (PO). Station House Officer (SHO) Bhushan Kumar said the accused had been identified as Gurmit Kaur, a resident of Bundala village. The SHO said Phillaur Judicial Magistrate (First Class) Gur Mehtab Singh had ordered that the accused had been declared a proclaimed offender and should be booked under Section 174-A (non-appearance in response to a proclamation under Section 82 of Act 2 of 1974). A case was registered against the accused. OC Jalandhar, March 22 Aiming to curb the menace of corruption in the state, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB) arrested Ravi Pankaj Sharma, Assistant Town Planner (ATP), Jalandhar, and two of his accomplices, Kunal Kohli and Arvind Sharma, both private individuals, for allegedly accepting a bribe of ~8 lakh. The fourth suspect, Ashish Arora, in the case is yet to be nabbed. The VB has formed teams to arrest him. The suspects were produced before a court, which sent them to five-day police remand. Disclosing this here today, a spokesperson for the VB said Narinder Singh, director of Castle Heritage Company, a resident of Bath Kalan village, had constructed “Bath Castle”, a marriage palace, in 2005, after the approval of the building plan from the Municipal Corporation. The complainant informed the VB that he received a letter in January from the ATP mentioning that the MC had received a complaint that the “Bath Castle” had been constructed illegally without the approval of the Jalandhar MC. The spokesperson said the ATP later arranged a meeting of Narinder Singh with Kunal Kohli, who sought ~20 lakh to withdraw the complaint. The complainant informed the VB that the deal was settled for ~10 lakh and Sharma had already taken ~2 lakh from him in two installments and was demanding the remaining amount of ~8 lakh from him. During the search, they recovered ATMs of several banks, two Press identification cards, five live cartridges and a revolver from his house. Apart from this, files with fake complaints to be made against several persons were also recovered. Expressing concern over the use of National Security Act (NSA) in some of the arrests, the Akali leaders termed it a ‘deep conspiracy’ against the image of the Sikhs in the state and failure of the AAP government. The two girls, Davinder Kaur and Satwinder Kaur, said their 96-year-old mother breathed her last at her residence in local Preet Nagar. The deased was the mother of six children, including three sons and three daughters. Her sons were abroad and had no communication with their mother. One of the daughters was living in the UK and two were living here. Keeping in view the situation, both the daughters came forward and performed the last rites of their mother and lit the pyre in the presence of several residents. Judge visits Hoshiarpur Central Jail, inspects kitchen Gold ornaments stolen Hoshiarpur, March 22 Dilbagh Singh Johal, District and Sessions Judge-cumchairman of the District Legal Services Authority, Hoshiarpur, visited the Central Jail here today. Amritsar, March 22 Two armed robbers looted a jeweller’s house in broad daylight in Ajnala yesterday. Aatish Dhawan of Ajnala said he along with other members of the family was present in the house when two bikeborne persons entered the house. He said his wife was working in the kitchen when one of the suspect pointed a “datar” and a pistol at her and entered the room. They took the entire family hostage. He said the accused claimed himself to be a member of the Jugnu gang. He said they broke open the lockers of the wardrobe and took away Rs 2 lakh and gold ornaments worth lakhs. He said the accused knew about him and family members. He owns a jewellery shop in the main bazaar in Ajnala. Ajnala DSP Sanjiv Kumar said investigation was under progress to identify the suspects. The police teams were analysing the CCTV cameras in the locality to find clues about the perpetrators. He said a case has been registered and further probe was on. — TNS Hoshiarpur, March 22 The court of District and Sessions Judge Dilbagh Singh Johal today convicted a person in an attempt-tomurder case. The court sentenced him to undergo 10 years of rigorous imprisonment. It also imposed a fine of ~17,000 on him. According to information, Bhupinder Singh had lodged a complaint with the Dasuya police on December 22, 2015 alleging that he, along with his cousin, was going to Garna Sahib from Jandore village on his bike. He alleged that the accused, Balraj Singh, alias Balle, a resident of Khun Khun Sarki, and Harprit Singh, alias Sahbi, a resident of Gondpur, along with their other accomplices, came in two cars and stopped them on the way. They reportedly attacked him with sharp weapons. The court sentenced Balraj Singh alias Balle, to undergo five years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ~10,000 on him under Section 307 of the IPC. In case of default of payment of fine, he would have to undergo additional imprisonment for three months. He has also been sentenced to undergo three years of imprisonment and fined ~5,000 under Section 326 of the IPC. In case of default in payment of fine, the accused would have to undergo additional imprisonment for two months. The accused has also been sentenced to undergo two years of imprisonment and fined ~2,000 under Section 335 of the IPC. In case of default in payment of the fine, he would have to undergo additional imprisonment for one month. Another accused, Harprit Singh, has been absconding and was declared a proclaimed offender on May 13, 2022.
