Deepkamal Kaur Tribune News Service Jalandhar, June 27 Want to walk at Shaheed Darshan Singh Kaypee Stadium at Mithapur, get ready to dole out Rs 2,500 per annum from July 1. This has led to a confrontation between residents of the area, who are habitual morning walkers, and the club that maintains the stadium. The stadium has recently undergone a massive renovation, including laying of the astroturf, new walking path, benches to sit and a new boundary wall using, Smart City funds. But no funds are coming for the maintenance from the Municipal Corporation that owns the property. The Youth Sports Club, Mithapur, that maintains the stadium has decided that since they need to maintain the facility by ensuring watering of the turf from time to time and employing gardeners and security guard, they need to have some financial support from the locals too. “We have to bear a monthly expenditure of Rs 1 lakh, including a huge power bill to run water motor, etc”, said members. Surjit Kaur, a morning walker, said, “I and my husband have a routine to take 4-5 rounds of the stadium daily after which we sit, do yoga and spend sometime with friends. Our kids come to the park every evening. If four of us have to use the facility now, we shall have to end up spending Rs 10,000. This is not conducive. This is the reason we have been fighting on the issue”. Balwinder, a hockey coach and resident of the area, said, “Even though the decision of taking the charges has been taken by the club committee, I am in favour of it. This stadium can be maintained only with the support of the users. A person shall have to dole out just Rs 200 a month for availing the facility, which is not much. I justify the decision of the club”. The club members have pointed to several other government bodies like Punjab Bus hits car, drags it on flyover; woman unhurt Phagwara, June 27 A major accident on the Goraya flyover was averted today when a speeding bus collided with a Nano car, dragging it a considerable distance along the road. Jalandhar, June 27 It has been six months since the Municipal Corporation elections were held, the district Congress is yet to nominate a Leader of the Opposition and Deputy Leader of the Opposition. The delay is being attributed to internal disorganisation, deliberate negligence and lack of leadership within the party. As many as 25 councillors had won on Congress ticket in the 80-ward Municipal Corporation, of whom two had left and joined the Aam Aadmi Party. Among the prominent contenders for the post are councillors Balraj Thakur, Paramjit Singh Sharry Chadha, Gurvinder Bunty Neelkanth, Dr. Jasleen Sethi and Pawan Kumar. Several voices within the party are also advocating for the appointment of a woman leader, arguing that it would send a progressive message, especially since the ruling party has not nominated any women for the posts of Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor or Deputy Mayor. One meeting of the MC has already been conducted and another might be in the offing. “Till the time, there is an effective leader in the Opposition to take on the ruling party in the MC, the Congress shall remain crippled in its ability to effectively raise public concerns within the House”, said former senior vice-chairman of the Pradesh Congress Committee, RTI and Grievances Department Sanjay Sehgal. This will give strength to the party and help establish a strong opposition against AAP within city over civic matters and people concern issues”. The BJP has already designated its councillors Charanjit Kaur Sandha and Manjit Singh Titu for the two key posts in the MC House.
