Investigating officer (IO) Amrik Singh said the suspect had been identified as Mahesh, alias Deepu, a resident of Abaad Pura, Jalandhar city. In his complaint to the police, Mohamad Salim, a resident of Gohir village, said the suspect and his accomplice, identified as Kuldeep Singh, a resident of Tahli village, stole a sheep and a lamb from his cattle shed. He was wanted in a case of selling illicit liquor registered in 2011 and was declared a PO in 2023. The car dragged the motorcycle for some distance following which the two-wheeler caught fire. The bikers, identified as Rajinder Singh (38), a resident of Katpalo village, and Gurpreet Singh Gopi, a resident of Ashahur village falling under the Phillaur police station, died on the spot. To monitor pesticide residue in food items, the Agriculture Department had proposed to set up Punjab’s first Pesticide Residue Testing Laboratory (PRTL) in 2008. The construction work for the PRTL was entrusted to the Punjab Mandi Board in 2009, which was completed at the cost of Rs 2.84 crore. The foundation stone for the opening of the laboratory and agriculture office was laid by former Director, Agriculture, Mangal Singh Sandhu, on May 18, 2012. However, the laboratory area, which has eight spacious rooms, is currently being used for record-keeping by the Agriculture Department. Agriculture Department officials said that they had not received any money from the government yet to start the work on the lab. As per the information, an estimate of Rs 18 crore had been made for renovating the building. The deceased have been identified as Ram Bali Mochi (50) and his son Naveen Kumar (24) of Dhakka Colony in Jalandhar Cantonment, while the person admitted to the hospital has been identified as Naveen’s cousin Rajesh Kumar.
