ASI Charanjit Singh was on duty near the panthic gathering at Heritage Street where family members of Waris Punjab De leader Amritpal Singh and nine others, who were charged with the NSA, were holding an agitation demanding shifting of the Dibrugarh jail detainees to Punjab. The gathering was attended by representatives of the Akal Takht and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee. Amritpal’s mother Balwinder has been sitting on hunger strike for indefinite period since February 22 for the acceptance of her demands. Several persons in Nihang attire at the gathering entered into a scuffle with ASI Charanjit Singh deputed with CID wing of the Punjab Police. The ASI said he was doing his duty when the suspects assaulted and injured him. One of the suspects snatched his camera. The ASI said his colleagues rescued him from the clutches of suspects. The police have booked over 20 suspects under Sections 332, 353, 186 and 379-B of the IPC in this connection. The police said the suspects would be identified and arrested soon. — TNS Woman murdered Tarn Taran, March 18 A 45-year-old widow identified as Kulwinder Kaur, a resident of Maluwal Santan village, was found murdered on Sunday. She was living with her brother Balkar Singh Babba in the village after the death of her husband in Khairdeenke. The victim’s married daughter Manpreet Kaur in her statement to the police expressed suspicion of the involvement of her uncle (mother’s brother) and another person identified as Vicky of Maluwal Santan village in her mother’s murder. Inspector Kashmir Singh, SHO, Chabal police station, said the post mortem of the body was conducted by a board of doctors on Monday. Further action would be initiated after receiving the autopsy report, the SHO said. — OC Vegetable, fruit merchants call off March 20 strike Tribune News Service Amritsar, March 18 After Cabinet Minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal’s assurance, vegetable and fruit merchants called off their proposed strike on March 20 today. A delegation of the Amritsar Fruit and Vegetable Merchants Association handed over a memorandum of their demands to the minister here today. Charanjit Singh Batra, president of the association, said the decision was taken after Dhaliwal assured them of accepting their demands. He suffered bullet injury on his right shoulder and was rushed to hospital where he is under treatment. The police arrested one of the suspects, identified as Kuldeep Singh of Bal Kalan village, while his son Gurchanan Singh was absconding. Manjit Singh, in his statement to the police, said he along with his family was going to attend a wedding function of a relative in their car. Amritsar, March 18 A clerk working in the Death and Birth Registration Department of the municipal corporation (MC) died in a road accident today morning. The victim was identified as Bhupinder Singh. Due to high pendency of work in the department, Bhupinder was reportedly working during Sunday night in the office. After finishing work, Bhupinder drove back from the Ranjit Avenue MC office to his home in Kathunangal at 6 am today. When Bhupinder reached near Kathunangal, he lost control over the car and the vehicle overturned. A seriously injured Bhupinder was taken to a hospital by passersby. He was declared brought dead by doctors at the hospital. Family members of deceased alleged that work load and discriminatory distribution of work among employees led to his death. He had eleven criminal cases registered against him at police stations in Tarn Taran and Amritsar districts. ~2.56 cr fine collected from Three nabbed for youth’s murder Ex-Senior Deputy Mayor urges residents to turn civic passengerssanstraintickets problems into poll issue Amritsar, March 18 Officials of the Ferozepur Division collected Rs 2.56 crore fine from ticketless passengers in the division spread across parts of Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir in February this year. Besides, hundreds of passengers were fined for littering on premises of railway stations in the division. Intensive checking drive in trains has been lauched by a team of the Ferozepur Division to curb ticketless and irregular travel and provide better services to genuine rail commuters. During ticket checking in trains in February, staff and chief ticket inspectors of the division caught 25,928 passengers travelling without tickets or irregularly. The head office gave the Ferozepur Division a revenue target of Rs 2.50 crore that was to be earned through ticket checking. Ticket checking staff of the division earned three per cent more than the given target. An official checks train tickets. Besides, to prevent public from littering and make them aware about cleanliness, regular checks were conducted at main railway stations of the division. An amount of Rs 81,000 was collected from 569 passengers for littering on railway station premises. Divisional Railway Manager Sanjay Sahu said ticket checking campaign would continue in the division. The main objective of the drive was to improve sale of railway tickets and recover fine from ticketless passengers so that they travelled only with proper tickets. He lauded ticket checking staff for their collective efforts and hard work. — TNS Amritsar, March 18 With the arrest of three persons, the city police today claimed to have cracked the sensational murder in which a youth was shot dead outside the Gate Hakima police station here four days ago. Those arrested were identified as Sahilpreet Singh, alias Sohi (23), a resident of Wadhwa Singh Colony, who was a truck driver, Abhi Gill (22), a resident of Nehru Colony, a vehicle recovery agent, and Sanju Randhawa (22), a resident of Gujjarpura locality. The police recovered a .32 bore pistol with two bullets and a bike used in the crime from their possession. The deceased, identified as Rajvir Sethi (30), a resident of Hansli Wali Gali, Pethiawala Bazaar, along with his two friends Sanju Don and Peter was travelling in a car. The suspects had an old enmity with Sanju Don and Peter. They were standing at Bhagtanwala Chowk when victim’s car passed from there. She said raids were on to nab the remaining suspects. — TNS Amritsar, March 18 With rising concern over choking of sewers in Amritsar West Assembly constituency, a poster campaign, “Main Amritsar Bol Raha Hun”, has been launched by former Senior Deputy Mayor Raman Bakshi, focusing on Lok Sabha elections. Bakshi has been motivating residents to question the ruling party candidates and make them address sewerage and sanitation issues in the city. “Amritsar has become a city of overflowing sewers, contaminated potable water and heaps of garbage. The name of the city means ‘Tank of Nectar’ (Amrit-sar). For the last two years, residents have been struggling with the problem of crippled sewerage system, heaps of garbage and stinky drinking water. Due to unhygienic environment, residents are dying of high-grade fever and other diseases.
