According to information, Salima, a resident of Tuto Mazara, lodged a complaint with the Mahilpur police station. She said Sumit Kumar, a resident of Krupa Colony, Amritsar, allegedly duped her of ~8.18 lakh on the pretext of sending her abroad. Meanwhile, Jagjit Singh, a resident of Chohka, told the Model Town police that Atma Singh, a resident of Tagore Nagar, allegedly duped him of ~9 lakh. The police have registered cases. OC FOUR ARRESTED WITH DRUGS Hoshiarpur: The district police arrested four persons, including a woman, and recovered a huge quantity of drugs from them. According to information, the Mahilpur police arrested a drug smuggler near Baddoyan village during a raid and recovered 500 grams of opium from him. The suspect has been identified as Rajesh Kumar, alias Kala, a resident of Mugowal. The Tanda police signalled a person to stop his at a naka car near Jhanwan village. During checking, the police claimed to have recovered a large number of intoxicating pills and 12 kg of marijuana. The police arrested three persons, including a woman. The suspects have been identified as Baljinder Singh, a resident of Sikri, Kuljot, alias Karan, alias Bhada, a resident of Ahiyapur, and Harbhajan Kaur, a resident of Tanda. OC Jalandhar, March 31 Panic gripped Sheetal Nagar late last night after residents discovered the body of a woman from a house in the area. The body was dumped in a room that was locked from outside. It was learnt that both ground and first floor of the house were given on rent, while the owner lived in a house nearby. The body when found was half-naked, and there were injury marks on the head, indicating that the woman was murdered. A bottle of liquor was found from the crime scene. As per Narendra Kumar, owner of the house, the room from where the body was recovered was given on rent. He said he had a shop on the ground floor from where he ran his depot, and also a room. There were two rooms on the first floor, all of which were on rent. He said a tenant, who was living in that room, had given this room to a migrant woman a few days ago, citing she had no shelter and would stay for a day or two. Jalandhar, March 31 Gearing up for the Lok Sabha poll, the Jalandhar Police Commissionerate today conducted an emergency mock drill in the city. A ‘Fake Emergency Call Tests Police Response’ was done under the supervision of senior officers. Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma said the drill was aimed at evaluating the readiness and coordination of various police units in handling emergency situations. He said all key units such as ACPs, SHOs, ERS, ICCC, flying squad teams and static surveillance teams were part of the drill. As part of the drill, a wireless call reporting a gathering of 150-200 people at PNB Chowk was made by Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma said the drill was aimed at evaluating the readiness and coordination of various police units in handling emergency situations. Divulging details, Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma said as part of the commitment to wipe out crime from the city, the Police Commissionerate started a special campaign. Under this campaign, a Division No. 3 police party was patrolling in the area. During patrolling, they got a tip-off about two thieves. The Police Commissioner said acting on the information, the police raided the area and arrested two thieves. The suspects had been identified as Daman Thaper and Sandeep Kumar, both residents of Jalandhar. He said a case under Section 411 of the IPC was registered against the suspects at the Division No 3 police station. Sharma said the police recovered four stolen mobile phones from the suspects on the spot. During investigation, the police recovered two more mobile phones from them. He said while a case was already registered against Daman, two cases were registered against Sandeep. Further investigations were on. The devotees, who were from Hukkran village, were returning in a pick-up van after paying obeisance at Khuralgarh Sahib. The driver lost control over the vehicle on an ascent uphill and it rolled down. The pick-up van was being driven by Harbans Singh, a resident of Mukhliyana village. — OC Jalandhar, March 31 The property tax wing has managed to recover Rs 44.50 crore in this financial year against a target of Rs 45.30 crore. Today, the wing recovered Rs 50 lakh despite it being Sunday, a holiday. This year, house tax worth Rs 2.37 crore was also recovered. “We made a total recovery of Rs 46.87 crore, including property tax and house tax. We didn’t expect such response on a Sunday from the public. But it was good to recover this much amount on the last day of the financial year, that too despite this being an election season,” said Bhupinder Singh, Superintendent. The department had been c m y b asking people to deposit the tax under the One Time Settlement (OTS) scheme. The scheme was implemented to provide a major relief to defaulters who are otherwise supposed to pay 20 per cent penalty and 18 per cent interest on the outstanding principal amount of all previous fiscal years. Under the procedure for tak- ing action against defaulters, inspectors of the property tax wing visit different areas to recover the tax. Defaulters who have not paid the tax are served a notice under Section 112 of the Municipal Corporation Act. They have to file a reply within three days, failing which another notice of sealing the property is served.— TNS Jalandhar, March 31 The Nakodar police have arrested two persons with 1,014 intoxicant tablets here. Those arrested have been identified as Soni, alias Kama, a resident of Bhandal Dona village at Sadar Kapurthala, and Jagtar Singh, alias Jaggi, a resident of Wareya Doana village in Kapurthala. The police revealed that during patrolling, a police party apprehended two suspects on suspicion near Uggi village. During search, the police recovered 507 intoxicant tablets each from Soni and Jaggi. A case under Sections 22, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act has been registered at the Sadar Nakodar police station.
