He claimed that residents would not have to face any waterlogging issue during the rainy season. He said, “Bucket type sewer cleaning machines and super sucker machines are working in lowlying areas of the city.” “Before the start of the rainy season, we had already alerted all officials and staff of the operation and maintenance (O&M) wing to be ready with allied machinery. It is true that whenever rain comes, the city roads get inundated. Due to homework done by the MC, water gets drained from roads in no time now. In the low-lying areas, machines are working day and night. The MC Commissioner said the Civil Department of the MC was working day and night to clear chambers on roads and in lanes so that rainwater does not gets accumulated there. Tarn Taran, July 15 Two real brothers, residents of Sarai Amanat Khan village, have been booked for cheating their stepmother by declaring her dead to grab a property. ASI Karam Singh of the Sarai Amanat Khan police station said here today that the suspects were identified as Bhupinder Singh and his brother Narinder Singh. The ASI said as the wife of Baldev Singh, father of the suspects had died, he got married to a woman identified as Kashmir Kaur in 2002. Baldev Singh died in 2022 and the suspects started maltreating their stepmother. The suspects prepared a fake death certificate of Kashmir Kaur. They got their father’s property registered in their names on the basis of fake death certificate. When Kashmir Kaur came to know about this, she approached the district police and the matter was investigated by a DSP On . the basis of the findings of the investigation report of the DSP the suspects were , booked under Sections 318 (4) of the BNS on Sunday. Two aides of gangster-turned terrorist Lakhbir Landa held Amritsar, July 15 The State Special Operation Cell (SSOC) here today claimed to have busted an interstate weapon smuggling module operated by foreign-based designated terrorist Lakhbir Singh Landa by arresting his two associates and recovered six sophisticated .32 bore pistols from their possession. DGP Gaurav Yadav in a statement on Monday said pursuing intelligence based operation, the SSOC nabbed two persons identified as Sumitpal Singh, a resident of Thathian village falling under the Harike police station in Tarn Taran district, and Arpandeep Singh, a resident of Chamba Kalan village in Tarn Taran. Both the suspects were students of a reputed college on main GT Road leading to Chheharta. A case under Section 25 of the Arms Act, and 61 (2) of the BNS, 2023, was registered at the SSOC here against the two suspects. He said the police got a tipoff that associates of Lawrence Bishnoi had retrieved weapons consignment from Six pistols seized from the two suspects by the police in Amritsar. This was the second consignment procured by the suspects from the same MPbased weapon dealer during the last two months, he said, while adding that they were identified by the police. “Investigations are going on to establish backward and forward links to arrest the remaining suspects and dismantle illegal weapon smuggling from the MP the DGP said. ,” “The suspects have revealed that they had procured the weapon consignment to further sell it to criminal elements. They have already sold two .32 bore pistols to two unknown persons in the Harike area a month ago,” he said. The DGP said efforts were being made to identify and apprehend the MP-based illegal weapons dealer. The suspects were produced in a court and brought on three-day police remand for further probe, the DGP added. — TNS Nihang who threatened IIM students not to smoke nabbed Amritsar, July 15 The police have nabbed the Nihang, who had entered the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) premises, located near Guru Nanak Dev University and threatened students not to smoke outside the campus. The incident occurred around eight days ago. The arrested suspect was identified as Gurpreet Singh, alias Bikkar Singh, a resident of the Chheharta area. He was booked by the police under Section 332 (C) (Criminal trespass), 126 (2) (wrongful restraint) and 351 (Criminal intimidation) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). “No one would be allowed to take law into their hands,” said Police Commissioner Ranjit Singh Dhillon. The incident had created panic among students. Most of the IIM students belong to other states. The Nihang threatened to chop students’ hands in case they did not relent from smoking outside the campus. Heera Singh, security guard of the Government Polytechnic College, where the IIM is located, stated to the police that he was at the gate while several students were standing near a kiosk outside the campus. Meanwhile, a Nihang came there on a bike and started using abusive language and threatened students not to smoke. Some students came back inside campus while others boarded a bus on the institution’s premises. He said the Nihang forced his entry into the IIM campus and boarded a bus parked on the premises. He threatened students not to smoke outside the campus. The Nihang said if they did so he would chop their hands. Residents alleged that the Municipal Commissioner did not respond to their phone calls, so they decided to visit his residence along with other members of the public. Residents of Tower Wali Gali, Mustafabad, have been complaining to the MC officials for the last 15 days about the overflow of sewage in their area. I have earned nothing for the last several days due to waterlogging in the street.” Residents claimed that the MC workers had visited the area several times along with machines, but failed to address the waterlogging issue. Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh said, “Sewer water has overflowed in streets, entered houses and even kitchens in Tower Wali Gali of Mustafabad. The Amritsar Municipal Corporation has totally failed to solve the issue despite repeated reminders. The Municipal Commissioner and his staff are not attending calls from the public.” He further said, “I spoke to the Minister of Local Bodies to take immediate remedial measures. I am going to write to the Punjab Chief Secretary to take action against officials concerned and depute a team of experts to take stock of the situation.” Even a day after the MLA’s visit, the situation did not changed. Amritsar, July 15 The imposition of Rs 1 crore interim penalty on a citybased chemical dye manufacturer by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and ordering criminal prosecution of its directors has proved that several units are releasing untreated lethal industrial effluents in water bodies and air and increasing polltuion, say residents living along the Tung Dhab drain. Pollution Control Board (PSPCB) has failed to get norms complied by such units.” Residents of various colonies along Tung Dhab drain, spanning from the Ranjit Avenue to Batala Road, Fatehgarh Churian Road, and new colonies on the north side have been complaining of foul smell and poisonous gases emanating from the drain. They say foul smell and gases were affecting their health and led to frequent malfunctioning of electronic appliances at their homes. Resident say they had been submitting written complaints to the authorities concerned about dumping of untreated lethal industrial effluents in the drain for the past several years. They say the recent NGT order ratified their long standing claim of releasing untreated effluents by industrial units in water bodies and the failure of the pollution control board to get the norms complied by such units. “With the passage of time, the foul smell emanating from choked drain assumed an alarming proportion, causing considerable damage to household appliances, leakage in copper pipes of refrigerators and air conditioners and corrosion and deterioration of their metal parts and paint surface,” say residents. “The effect of fumes on surface indicates how harmful these may be for human beings if these can corrode a copper pipe in a matter of few months,” they added.
