Tarn Taran EO, 2 others held for embezzlement of Nagar Council funds Our Correspondent Tarn Taran, May 2 The Vigilance Bureau (VB) has registered a case against son and daughter-in-law of late former Tarn Taran MLA, Executive Officer (EO) and clerk of Nagar Council and a firm owner on the charge of embezzlement of funds of the civic body. A VB spokesperson said a case was registered on the basis of an inquiry initiated after checking of records by the Local Government Department. The spokesperson said those booked, include Tarn Taran Nagar Council EO Sharanjeet Kaur and clerk Narinder Kumar, late former MLA Dharamvir Agnihotri’s son Sandeep Kumar Agni- hotri and his daughter-in-law Jyoti Sachdeva, owners of M/s MK Padam Petroleum and Rajiv Gupta, a resident of New Pawan Nagar, Amritsar, a shareholder in M/s Sharp Focus Vision Pvt Ltd and M/s SR Enterprises Ltd. He said the EO, clerk and Gupta were arrested by the police The spokesperson said during probe, it came to light that fraudulent transactions were done by the EO from 2017 to 2022. She had made wrong payments through cheques to M/s Sidhu Construction Company, M/s Brother Construction Company and M/s Friends Association from different heads. Besides, the EO had made bogus payments to Sandeep Kumar Agnihotri’s companies, he added. Tarn Taran, May 2 Ten passengers were injured in a road accident on the Tarn Taran-Patti road near Rasulpur canal in the early morning hours on Friday when a Punjab Roadways bus coming from Patti collided head on with a truck. Four of the injured were admitted to the local Civil Hospital, while the one who was seriously injured, was referred to Guru Nanak Dev Hospital, Amritsar. Six of the injured were discharged on the spot after giving first aid at a nearby private hospital. The bus was going to Chandigarh. Randhir Singh (36), driver of the bus, who was among the injured, said he applied brakes of his vehicle on seeing a tree which fell on the road during storm and heavy rain last night. He said the bus did not stop and collided with truck. The truck overturned after the collision. The normal traffic on the road was disrupted after the accident. Officials from the Sadar police reached the spot and initiated rescue operations. Six held with 2 pistols, ~2 lakh fake currency Tribune News Service Amritsar, May 2 The special cell of the Amritsar (Rural) police have arrested six persons and recovered two pistols along with 21 live cartridges, Rs 2 lakh in fake Indian currency apart from two motorcycles and five mobile phones from their possession. Those arrested were identified as Ashish Kumar, Karandeep Singh, Kashmir Singh and Jashandeep Singh of Tarn Taran, Vishal of the Islamabad area and Arshdeep Singh of Lahorimal village. Maninder Singh, SSP Amritsar (Rural), said the spe- cial cell got specific input that the above said accused were involved in criminal activities and carrying firearms. The informer also disclosed that the accused also had fake currency. He said the accused were hiding beneath an under construction flyover at Boparai village. Following the tip-off, police teams were dispatched to the spot and the accused were arrested. A case under Section 61 (2) and 29 of the BNS and the Arms Act was registered against the six accused. The crop residue caught fire at adjoining Adliwal village because of heavy storm last night and soon engulfed sheds of the Gujjar Community leading the unfortunate incident. There are five residential deras of the community members at the village. Cabinet Minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal on Friday visited deras and met Gujjar community members. While expressing grief, he assured them all possible help from the Punjab Government. He said fire erupted because of the storm and gutted residences and dairies of the Gujjar com- munity members. He said suitable compensation would be given to victim community members from the CM relief fund. He asked veterinary doctors of the Animal Husbandry Department and officials of the district administration to prepare a report of losses to dairies. He said the contribution of the Gujjar community to the white revolution could not be ignored. — TNS Amritsar, May 2 Four members of a family lost their lives after a speeding tipper truck collided head on with their car near Jeevan Pandher village located on the AmritsarMehta road here today. Those killed were identified as Gurdev Singh (65), his wife Malkeet Kaur (60), both residents of Boja village under the Ghuman police station, their daughter Paramjit Kaur (35) of Balpuria village in Batala and their nephew Dharminder Singh (30) of Boja village. The victims were returning home after seeing off Dilpreet Singh, grandson of Gurdev Singh, at Sri Guru Ram Das Jee International Airport who had to fly to England. Balwinder Singh, SHO, Tarsikka police station, said the incident occurred near Jeevan Pandher village. The victims died on the spot. Their relatives, including parents of Dilpreet Singh, were travelling in another car. The incident has left the family devastated. The SHO said the exact cause of the accident was yet to be ascertained though a case had been registered against unknown driver of the tipper truck who fled from, while leaving his vehicle at the accident spot. An eyewitness told the police that the driver was driving his tipper truck at high speed which led to the accident. The police with the help of the people took out bodies of the deceased from the car. The police said bodies would be handed over to the family after post-mortem examination. Investigation was on to identify the tipper truck driver and arrest him, the police said. Indo-Pak tension: Peaceniks demand amicable settlement to avoid war-like situation, work towards mutual trust Amritsar, May 2 For maintaining peace and friendship of the South Asia, especially between India and Pakistan, organisations like Hind-Pak Dosti Manch, Folklore Research Academy Amritsar, Punjab Jagriti Manch Jalandhar and Progressive Writers’ Association Punjab, which have been working for the past several decades, expressed deep concern over the growing conflict between India and Pakistan after the heinous attack on tourists by terrorists in Pahalgam. Leaders associated with these organisations in a joint statement said, “There is a suspicion among people of both the countries about emergence of war-like situation.” ❝ The common people should not be punished for inhumane acts of terrorists. It is very important for governments of India and Pakistan to treat them differently from terrorists. Politicians and media in both the countries should also refrain from inciting hatred. Ramesh Yadav, PRESIDENT, FOLKLORE RESEARCH ACADEMY, AMRITSAR ❞ They demanded that an amicable solution to avoid this situation should be there and the mutual trust between the two countries had to be restored. These leaders also demanded relaxation in strong decision taken by India and Pakistan to cancel visas of citizens of both the countries. Leaders said there should be exemption from visa cancellation for citizens on humanitarian grounds, for married couples and people traveling to one or the other country for medical treatment. “The common people should not be punished for inhumane acts of terrorists. It is very important for the governments to treat common people differently from terrorists. Politicians and media in both the countries should also refrain from inciting hatred,” said Ramesh Yadav, president, Folklore Research Academy, Amritsar. They also opined that the agreement signed between the first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, and the then Prime Minister of Pakistan, Liaquat Ali Khan, in 1950 for the protection and welfare of minorities in both the countries should be implemented effectively. “Also on these lines, both the countries should sign another new agreement regarding not allowing any terrorist organisation to use their respective lands and resolve all bilateral issues through peaceful negotiations,” said Satnam Singh Manak, general secretary, Hindu-Pakistan Friendship Forum. Deepak, general secretary, Punjab Jagriti Manch, and c m y b Sukhdev Singh Sirsa, general secretary, Progressive Writers’ Association of India, said a serious initiative from Pakistan could prevent further deterioration of relations between the two countries. They said Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif should take an initiative on behalf of his country. They said he should speak to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself and strongly condemn the attack on tourists. “He should assure that in the coming times, Pakistan will not allow its soil to be used by antiIndia terrorist organisations in any way. Shehbaz Sharif must fully cooperate with India in taking action against perpetrators of the Pahalgam incident,” they said. — TNS Amritsar, May 2 Following an investigation into the seizure of drugs on March 10, the police have arrested a trafficker Pawandeep Singh of Bhitewad village after recovering Rs 3 lakh drug money from him. Pawandeep is currently in police remand. Earlier, the police had recovered 1.062 kg of heroin from Surjit Singh of Bal Sachander village and Kulbir Singh of Rajasansi. Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Jaspal Singh said on March 10, the Division D police arrested Surjit with 1 kg of contraband in the Lakkar Mandi area. During interrogation, Surjit revealed that he was to hand over heroin to Kuldeep after procuring it from Pawandeep. The ACP said Kuldeep was arrested on March 18 with 50 gm of heroin. — TNS

The Tribune, the largest selling daily in North India, publishes news and views without any bias or prejudice of any kind. Restraint and moderation, rather than agitational language and partisanship, are the hallmarks of the paper. It is an independent newspaper in the real sense of the term.
The English edition apart, the 133-year-old Tribune has two sister publications, Punjabi Tribune (in Punjabi) and Dainik Tribune (in Hindi).
