The police have registered cases and booked two persons. According to information, a person died after being hit by a bike near Tanuli village. The deceased has been identified as Gurjeet Singh of village Mona. The accused Om Kumar is a resident of Paili, SBS Nagar. Similarly, Amarjit Singh of Jalalpur, told the police that he was going towards Begowal on a bike with Jagir Ram. A car hit the bike. Jagir was killed while he got injured. A case has been registered against Johnny of Buttran, Jalandhar. OC BURGLARS TAKE AWAY ORNAMENTS Phagwara: The house of a villager Makhan Singh was reportedly burgled in village Chiherru near Phagwara on Thursday night. The burglars entered the house after breaking open the locks and took away gold ornaments and other valuable goods worth more than Rs 2 lakh. The police have registered a case and are investigating the matter. OC MOTORCYCLE FOUND STOLEN Phagwara: A motorcycle, bearing the registration number RJ-23VS-4185, was found stolen from near a paying guest accommodation in village Miherru near Phagwara on Thursday night. Bike owner Ajit Jakhar, presently residing in a PG facility near Law Gate, told the police that he parked his bike outside his accommodation but found it stolen the next morning. The police have registered a case . OC VILLAGER HELD FOR EXTORTION Phagwara: The police have arrested another Tarn Taran villager on charges of extortion and criminal intimidation. The accused has been identified as Karanbir Singh of Munda village under Tarn Taran Sadar police station. Love Preet Singh of Yusaf Pur Dare Wal village had complained to the police that the accused and his accomplice made two calls on July 10 and demanded Rs 50 lakh as ransom money and fired a gunshot at his house. The accused has been identified as Amanpreet Singh of Kotla Suraj Mall. Rinku said Shah had told him that the Cabinet would soon approve the proposal. It is designed to tap the talent pool of scientists and entrepreneurs internationally. The programme aims to facilitate international collaboration and expertise sharing in cuttingedge areas of research and technology. The courses will enable NIT-Jalandhar to invite renowned international faculty to teach students. — TNS 11 dengue, 40 diarrhoea cases reported in Jalandhar since Jan Aparna Banerji Tribune News Service TWO OF FAZILKA HELD FOR THEFT Forget minors, parents too defy traffic norms ON A WRONG TRACK Jalandhar, August 2 Eleven cases of dengue had been reported from January to July this year in Jalandhar. Of the total 11 dengue cases, seven cases were reported in January only while two in May and one each in June and July. A total of 255 dengue larvae have been found at various places since January. Today alone, 21 dengue larvae were found in Jalandhar — 9 urban and 12 rural. Two chikungunya cases have also been reported. Surveys have been conducted at over 2 lakh houses by health teams. However, winters have seen dengue cases for the past many years. Last year, 172 cases of dengue had been reported in Jalandhar. As many as 60 teams had also been deployed by the Health Department in July. The MC had also issued 23 notices to residents to check the breeding of larvae and dengue. Assistant Health Officer, MC, Jalandhar, Shrikishan Sharma said, “Fogging began this year as early as June. Teams are visiting areas daily. Our teams are advising people to be cautious and prevent accumulation of water in coolers or utensils on their premises. In areas like Urban Estate, Guru Tegh Bahadur Nagar and Model Town, larvae have been often seen in coolers. In slum areas, water storage drums are the breeding spots of dengue larvae. People are being regularly asked to prevent the breeding of larvae.” With diarrhoea cases just beginning to subside in Kapurthala, the Health Department and MC in Jalandhar have become proactive to keep the disease at bay. As many as 40 diarrhoea cases and three cholera cases had been reported in the district in July. In Kapurthala many lives were lost due to the outbreak of diarrhoea. c m y b 2 booked for illegal mining PHAGWARA, AUGUST 2 The police have booked two Kapurthala residents for illegal mining near the Sutlej. Mining inspector Ajay Kumar had communicated to the police about the illegal mining at Mandala Chhana village.He said president of the Flood Stoppage Committee at Giddpindi village Kulwinder Singh had informed the police about the illegal mining at village Mandala. — OC Jalandhar, August 2 With the traffic police beginning a 20-day awareness drive outside schools regarding harsh punishment for underage drivers and their parents as per the amended Motor Vehicles Act from August 21, the police are grappling with another problem. The assistant sub-inspectors (ASIs), put on duty outside the schools, said it was not just the minors, who were violating rules by riding scooters and bikes, even their parents and guardians were seen flouting norms by not wearing helmet and not carrying the required documents along. “If the parents themselves are violating traffic norms, nothing can be said about the youngsters. We do not see things improving even in the next 20 days,” said an ASI posted outside a school in Model Town. In view of this, the traffic police have started going tough against the offenders by setting up nakas between 1 pm and 3 pm at various locations in the city.
