OC Jalandhar, July 16 Almost five weeks since the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government had re-launched the sports hub development project at Burlton Park here, the work is getting hampered as a huge chunk of land has been leased out on temporary basis for a show. The show organisers have put up a circus and a London Bazaar in the park just near the site where construction work had started. While the organisers had paid Rs 11 lakh Tehbazari fee for occupying around 5,000 sq feet of the site, there are reports that they had occupied more than double the area which was earmarked for them. The organisers are expected to continue to occupy the land for another fortnight. On June 11, Aam Aadmi Party national convener Arvind Kejriwal, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, Rajya Sabha MP Harbhajan Singh and AAP leader Nitin Kohli had launched the sports hub project at the site after which the construction work had begun. Today, at the meeting of the society with sarpanches and dignitaries of the area at Gurdwara Sahib in Haibowal, it was decided to resume this bus service. Giving information in this regard, Captain Paramjit Singh (retd) said, “The bus service is being re-started on the demand of residents of the Beet area. The Municipal Corporation (MC) authorities had recently issued orders that they would not allow the cracker market inside Burlton Park during the festive season like the previous years, officials perhaps showed no such deterrence for the exhibitors. The cracker sellers have now started raising the issue that if the circus and bazaar organisers have been granted permission, they too should be allowed to open the market at the same site. “There can be no preferential treatment given to anyone. This is the most conducive location from the point of view of available open space, parking of vehicles and easy access to buyers,” said the cracker sellers association, which has started contesting the matter. Near the site, where the circus has been set up, the contractor has started raising a multi-purpose hall for yoga, judo, gymnastics and other sports activities. Since the site remains largely occupied, the contractor has been able to start work only in a limited area. Senior Deputy Mayor Balbir S Dhillon said, “Ideally, this ground should be free from any temporary bazaars now as the construction work has started. I will take up the matter with Mayor Vaneet Dhir.” One of the cars damaged in collision near Goraya. Sonia. The police confirmed that there was no loss of life in the accident. CCTV grab of incident goes viral Tribune News Service Jalandhar, July 16 After the Punjab Assembly had on Tuesday decided to form a committee to trace the missing report in the 1986 killing of four youth in Nakodar by the police, father of one of the victims has termed the move as a diversion tactic of the government. In statement, Baldev S Littran, father of victim Ravinder Singh Littran, stated, “Raising voice for the 1986 sacrilege in Nakodar and the Justice Gurnam Singh Commission inquiry report along with its missing parts are not new issues. Former AAP leaders HS Phoolka and Kanwar Sandhu were among the first few to raise these concerns strongly in the Punjab Assembly. Later, Finance Minister Harpal Cheema and Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan also raised these issues during their time in the Opposition.” Notably, in the 1986 incident, four youth were shot dead, allegedly by the police, while protesting desecration of a religious text. The distraught Victims' families address mediapersons at Punjab Press Club in Jalandhar. TRIBUNE PHOTO: MALKIAT SINGH father said, “After being in power for over three-and-a- half years, the AAP leaders are now using this issue cynically to distract from the real matter at hand. Since taking office, they have actively blocked efforts to bring the perpetrators of the Nakodar massacre to justice. We have sent seven letters to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, which were also forwarded to Finance Minister Harpal Cheema and Speaker Sandhwan. Instead of addressing these concerns, they have shielded the perpetrators of the Nakodar police killings.” He also alleged, “Despite my request to Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan on September 29, 2022, the matter was not aptly represented in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, resulting in disposal of both of his petitions on October 7, 2023. These petitions were only possible because of the AAP’s initial support. Despite these repeated efforts, we have yet to receive any tangible response or action on our grievances.” The four affected families have been waiting for action for 40 years to get justice and accountability. The successive governments had only compounded their pain and anguish, they maintain. Baldev Singh rued, “The AAP government has not taken a single concrete step to deliver justice in the 1986 case of Nakodar, 2015 Bargari case, or sacrilege cases of Guru Granth Sahib. If there is genuine commitment to justice, order a time-bound CBI inquiry into the 1986 Nakodar killings, the illegal cremation of four unarmed Sikh youth, and the disappearance of Part 2 of the judicial report. File charges and arrest policemen responsible for these atrocities. Without accountability, there is no closure. To this day, not a single perpetrator of Saka Nakodar or Saka Bargari has been brought to justice.” received first aid on the spot. The impact left both the vehicles badly damaged.
