Investigating officer (IO) Manjit Singh said the suspects were identified as Kailash Chandar Pathak, a resident of Partap Chowk, Ludhiana, his son Mohit Pahak, and their three unidentified accomplices. Karanbir Sharma, a resident of Mohalla Purewal Colony on the railway road, complained to the police that he was returning home from Ludhiana on August 23 evening when his father-in-law and brother-in-law and their three unidentified accomplices in a car waylaid him near a warehouse on Nurmahal Road in Nakodar and seriously injured him. The victim said his fatherin-law and brother-in-law had planned this attack. The victim sustained an injury on his collar bone in the incident. The victim identified as Manoj Kumar (22) was heading to duty at the printing press on Friday night when two bikeborne persons attacked him. The suspects kicked victim’s Activa scooter due to which he fell on the road. The suspects snatched victim’s scooter, a mobile phone and Rs 3,500 cash kept in the two-wheeler trunk and fled from the spot. Both bike-borne men were wearing masks. Investigating officer Sarwan Singh said Shikha, wife of the deceased, told the police that her husband was a drunkard and might have died due to excessive drinking. Traders hold candle march, demand justice for Kolkata doc Tribune News Service Jalandhar, August 25 A candle march was held by traders to demand justice for Kolkata doctor, who was raped and murdered at a hospital. Traders carrying placards took out 1 km march from Doaba Chowk to Sodal Mandir Chowk today. The march was held under the banner of Jalandhar Traders and Manufacturers Association along with United Canvasser Organisation on the Sodal road here. Raj Kumar, a trader who participated in the protest, said the incident had shaken them. He said, “Its shame that women are suffering like this. We cannot sit quiet over such incidents.” Gursharan Singh, a senior industrialist, said the accused must be hanged. He said, “The government must take steps to address such serious issue. Strict laws should be enacted to prevent crime against women.” Jalandhar, August 25 An eight-year-old girl has been raped by her neighbour (28) in Kapurthala on the pretext of giving her Rs 10. The victim’s family complained to the police on Saturday that their neighbour identified as Sukhjinder Singh lured their little girl and raped her. An FIR was registered under Sections 65 of the BNS and Section 6 of the POCSO Act on Saturday in this connection. In her complaint to the police, the victim’s mother alleged that on August 23, her daughter had gone to a nearby house where Sukhjinder Singh of Dhakka Colony lured the girl to his home on the pretext of giving her Rs 10. She alleged that the suspect raped her daughter at his home. The complainant said her daughter was crying uncontrollably when she returned home. Sanjeewan Singh, SHO, Kapurthala city police station, said, “The suspect has been arrested for having unnatural sex with minor girl.” — TNS NRI booked for fraudulently obtaining immigration licence Tribune News Service Jalandhar, August 25 The Jalandhar Commissionerate police have filed charges against an NRI who allegedly acquired an immigration licence from the administration through fraudulent means. The suspect, identified as Anmoldeep Singh, who is a Canadian citizen and originally hails from Vivekanand Park in the Maqsudan area here, is currently under investigation with his arrest still pending. The case against Singh has been registered under Sections 13 (1) and 16 of the Punjab Travel Professions Regulation Act and Section 177 of the BNS at the Navi Baradari police station. According to sources, the investigation was initiated after a formal complaint was lodged with the Jalandhar Deputy Commissioner (DC) demanding an inquiry into legitimacy of Singh’s immigration licence and its subsequent cancellation. The inquiry revealed that Singh, a resident of Canada, had illegally obtained an immigration licence. Grocery shop targeted in late-nighttheft,~70Kstolen Tribune News Service Jalandhar, August 25 There seems to be no end to daily thefts and snatching incidents in the city, with residents questioning the security situation and raising concerns about their safety. In a recent incident, thieves targeted a grocery store in Avatar Nagar, making off with Rs 70,000 in cash and other goods. The crime occurred late Saturday night and was captured in the footage of the CCTV cameras installed inside the shop. As per information, shopkeeper Sunny closed his store at 10 pm on Saturday, only to return the next morning to find the locks broken and the store ransacked. The cash box, which contained Rs 70,000, was emptied. The CCTV camera footage shows two sus- pects arriving on a motorcycle, committing the theft and fleeing from the spot. A formal complaint has been lodged with the Division No. 5 police station. The police are scanning footage of the CCTV cameras to identify culprits. The increasing frequency of such incidents has sparked fear among local residents. One resident, Kavish Mehra, expressing concerns, said, “Commuting alone at night has become a terrifying task. The lack of security in our neighbourhoods is alarming. Every day brings news of another theft or snatching. We no longer feel safe in our own city.” Meanwhile, officials of Division No. 5 police station said a complaint regarding theft had been received. They said a probe is on to identify the suspects. They said thieves would be arrested soon. Upon confirming the allegations, legal advice was sought from the District Attorney (DA), Legal. Man held for assaulting cop Phagwara, August 25 A man was arrested for allegedly assaulting a policeman when the latter asked the suspect to show documents of his car during a special vehicle checking drive here on Saturday. The suspect was identified as Sunny (30). The incident occurred on Friday night in the Prempura near Shivpur Road in Phagwara. Phagwara Superintendent of Police (SP) Rupinder Kaur Bhatti said the suspect assaulted an ASI and tore his uniform. Sunny was later overpowered by policemen and arrested. The injured cop was identified as ASI Mahinder Singh. A case was registered against Sunny. Bhatti said the police recovered one 7.65mm pistol and six live cartridges from the suspect. Some people associated with farmer organisations erected a tent on the spot and staged a sit-in to stop impounding of tractor-trailers by the police. On the basis of the information received from Junior Engineer (JE) of the Mining Department, the DSP informed the Basti Bohra police post under the Tanda police station about illegal mining near Abdullahpur village on the river bank and asked to take action against violators. After receiving information, Basti Bohra police post in-charge Rajwinder Singh reached the spot with a team and impounded five trac- tor-trailers laden with sand there. The tractors had flags of farmer organisations while their drivers or owners could not be traced. During this time, some members of farmer organisations staged a protest by pitching tents on the spot against the police action. Gurinderjit Singh Nagra, SHO, Tanda, said when he received information, he also reached the spot with a police team and informed senior officials. Nihang jathebandi head Baba Lakhvir Singh said some people were supporting and protecting illegal miners in the name of farmer organisations. He said they were defaming farmers.
