The deceased Ravi Kumar of Jalandhar was going to village Khatti near Phagwara along with his wife Kamaljit Kaur to meet their relatives. The car driver fled after hitting them. Kamaljit also sustained injuries. The police have registered a case against the car driver. The body of the deceased had been handed over to the family. OC YOUTH INJURED IN ATTACK Phagwara: On a complaint lodged by Mandip Singh of Kanshi Nagar, Phagwara, the police have registered a case against a youth Rohit on the charges of attacking and injuring the complainant last night. Personal enmity was said to be the cause of attack, the police said. OC 2 ARRESTED FOR LIQUOR TRADE Phagwara: The police have arrested two liquor traders and seized 90 bottles of illicit liquor from their possession on Tuesday night. Station House Officer Amandeep Nahar said the accused, identified as Amanpreet Singh and Paramjit Singh, residents of Moti Bazar, Phagwara, who were nabbed at a check point, were booked under the Punjab Excise Act. OC SHOP BURGLED IN PHAGWARA Phagwara: A marble shop was reportedly burgled on the Phagwara-Nakodar road late Tuesday night, leading to the theft of cash and other items. According to Munish Jalota, shop owner of Indian Marble House, four persons entered the showroom, tied the watchman and entered the shop. They made off with Rs 8,000 and several other valuables. In an emotional appeal before the commission, Sanghera urged it to arrest him, saying that perhaps his arrest would expedite the release of pending refunds. The arrest warrants stemmed from the JIT’s failure to comply with commission orders to refund payments in 128 cases, involving three residential schemes Indra Puram Master Gurbanta Singh Enclave (2006), Bibi Bhani Complex (2010), and Surya Enclave Extension (launched in 2011 and again in 2016). These schemes have been plagued by hundreds of consumer the years. Sources Kapurthala, October 23 A 60-year-old farmer was gunned down by some youths in a land dispute case at Jhall Theerkriwal village here last evening. Farmer Jaspal Singh and his son Gurmukh Singh of Sukhia Nangal village had gone to the site to check their fields in their car. The fatherduo son had been tilling about 25 acre in the village for the past 8-9 years. As they reached there, some youths, including Rattan Singh, Tarsem Singh, Bagga Singh and others, attacked them. Both sides engaged in a fight over occupying the land. The fight took a nasty turn when one of the youths opened fire and a bullet hit Jaspal Singh. Inter-state opium smuggling gang busted, two held Tribune News Service Jalandhar, October 23 The Jalandhar Commissionerate Police, under the leadership of Commissioner of Police Swapan Sharma, has busted an inter-state gang involved in opium smuggling. Commissioner Sharma stated that the police received a tip-off and set up a check-point near Y Point, Bhagat Singh Colony, Jalandhar. During check, a truck (UP25-DT-6590) was spotted approaching from the service lane on the Jalandhar-Amritsar slip road. When police officers signalled the driver to stop, he panicked and attempted to flee. The police immediately chased the vehicle and apprehended the suspects. The driver was identified as Bablu of Kaimua Sardar Nagar, Bareilly. His accomplice was identified as Akash Kumar, also from Kaimua, Bareilly. On searching the vehicle, officers found two kg of opium. An FIR was registered under Sections 18-61-85 of the NDPS Act at Police Station Division 1, Jalandhar. “Further investigations are ongoing as we probe the larger network of this inter-state smuggling gang,” said police officials. Farmer shot over land dispute MARRIED WOMAN, CHILD MISSING Nakodar: A 30-year-old youth, a resident of Ball Nau village, has been missing for the last five days. The victim has been identified as Rajwindar Singh, who left home on October 19 and did not return. A missing report had been registered. OC indicated that the pending amount has ballooned from Rs 14 crore last year due to the JIT’s ongoing non-compliance, with accrued interest and additional judgments increasing the total. Over the past few years, more than 150 arrest warrants have been issued against JIT officials for noncompliance issues, but many warrants were never executed, with the authorities citing the unavailability of officials. Speaking to the media outside the commission, Sanghera acknowledged the non-compliance issues but assured that efforts are underway to arrange funds. He stated that his office had sent 19 letters to the state government, requesting grants to resolve the pending cases, but these requests were initially approved and later put on hold for unknown reasons. He expressed optimism that the process would soon be in motion, with funds expecting to be released in the near future. He said he had requested a 10-day time from the commission to outline the pending payments and provide a timeline when the refunds could be initiated. Speaking at the golden jubilee celebrations at Prem Chand Markanda SD College for Women, Jalandhar, Governor Kataria highlighted the vital role girls played as the foundation of society. He stressed the need to empower them through education and provide them with the tools to realise their dreams. He said women possessed immense potential and, when given the right direction, could achieve great heights. The Governor remarked that India’s history was filled with examples of women’s contributions and, even today, women were working shoulder-to-shoulder with men in several fields, including politics, military, police, sports and arts. He emphasised that no field had been untouched by women’s competence. The Governor praised the college’s 50 years of contribution to girls’ education and offered his best wishes for future success.
