Shop owner Nitin stated that his salon "Girl Shine," is currently underconstruction. However, on the night of the theft, the culprits dismantled and stole the copper wiring and AC pipes, causing an estimated loss of Rs 20,000. The shop owner has reported the incident to the police. Cops are investigating the matter. No arrests have been made so far. OC NAKODAR TRAVEL AGENT ARRESTED Phagwara: The Shahkot police have arrested a Nakodar travel agent for duping a woman of Rs 14.60 lakh on the pretext of sending her abroad. The accused Narindar Kumar Jagi belongs to Mandiala village in Nakodar. Neetu of Kanganna village had complained to the police that she had paid Rs 14.60 lakh to the accused for facilitating her migration abroad. However, neither she was sent abroad, nor got the money back. A case was registered against the accused on February 25. OC TWO HELD FOR DRUG PEDDLING Phagwara: The Lohian Khas police have arrested a 'drug peddler' on the charge of selling intoxicated tablets. As many as 320 intoxicated tablets (loose) were recovered from the possession of the accused Jaswindar Singh of Machaki Kalan in Faridkot. The police arrested another drug peddler on the charge of selling tablets. As many as 45 tablets (loose) were recovered from the possession of the accused Himmat Gill of Rishi Nagar, Nakodar. oc GANG OF THIEVES BUSTED, 3 HELD Phagwara: The Shahkot police have claimed to bust a gang of thieves with the arrest of its three members. The accused have been identified as Gurpreet of Kotli Gajran village, his brother Lovpreet and Gurpreet Singh of the same village. Sarabjit Kaur of the same village complained to the police that the accused stole two gas cylinders, one inverter with battery and one AC from her house between February 25 and March 7. A case has been registered against the accused. oc MAN HELD FOR DRUG PEDDLING Phagwara: The Phagwara police have arrested a ‘drug peddler’ and recovered 45 intoxicated tablets from his possession here on Monday night. The accused Ashok Kumar of village Dhak-Pandori was nabbed at a check point. A case under the NDPS Act has been registered against the accused. OC YOUTH BOOKED FOR KIDNAPPING Phagwara: The Shahkot police charged Gora of Bhathe village in Kapurthala with kidnapping of a minor girl. A case has been registered against the suspect on a complaint of the father of the victim. Panchayat secy caught accepting ~15,000 bribe Our Correspndent PHAGWARA, MARCH 18 The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB), during its continued efforts to combat corruption, on Tuesday arrested Parmjit Singh, a panchayat secretary from village Jhall Bimbri in Kapurthala district, for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 15,000. However, the co-accused in the case, Hardyal Singh, Block Development and Panchayat Officer (BDPO) of Kapurthala, managed to flee the scene. An official spokesperson for the Punjab VB said the arrest was made following a complaint filed by a resident of village Jhall Bimbri. The complainant alleged that both BDPO and panchayat secretary had demanded a bribe of Rs 20,000 in exchange for issuing a bank cheque to pay the construction costs of a street. He further added that after conducting a preliminary inquiry, a VB team laid a trap, leading to the arrest of the panchayat secretary while he was accepting Rs 15,000 from the complainant in the presence of two official witnesses. The BDPO, however, escaped before he could be apprehended. The spokesperson added that a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act had been registered against both accused. The arrested secretary would be presented before a court tomorrow. Further investigation into the case was under progress, he said. Jalandhar, March 18 Frustrated by the Municipal Corporation’s (MC) failure to comply with a Permanent Lok Adalat order, which had directed it to repair the Defence Colony road by November 30 last year, residents have now filed an execution petition against the civic body. The petition has been filed by residents, led by their society’s general secretary Harbinder Singh, through their counsel advocate Vikram Dutta, urging the Lok Adalat to enforce its judgment. The order, issued in October 2024, mandated the MC to carry out repairs on the road, which connects Defence Colony to PAP Chowk and had been in a deteriorated condition for over two years. Residents say that despite the Lok Adalat’s directive, the MC did not comply with the orders. They said while officials did turn up, they merely recarpeted one side of the road and left the other side covered with gravel, making the situation even worse. “The gravel have become a hazard, especially for two- Defence Colony road continues to trouble commuters. They added that the road has long been a source of frustration for commuters and locals, with numerous potholes making travel difficult. “The poor condition of the stretch has also led to frequent accidents, particularly at night when visibility is low”, they lamented. Advocate Vikram Dutta said April 7 has been fixed for the hearing of the execution petition and they hope the Lok Adalat will intervene to ensure the MC follows through on its commitment. “We have awaited long enough. If the authorities continue to ignore court orders, legal action is the only option left,” he added. The latest incident that took place today at Kot Sadiq here saw a teenager, with two other teenagers sitting behind, crash a speeding car into a garment shop before it overturned. The shop, owned by Ramesh, was empty at the time, preventing what could have been a major tragedy. CCTV footages show the car moving at a high speed before losing control and smashing into the shop. The teenagers claimed that they were returning after taking the examination when the accident occurred. While no major injuries were reported and all reported to be stable, the incident again highlights the dangers of underage driving and the urgent need for parental accountability. ASI Satpal Singh of Bhargo Camp police station confirmed the incident, saying that the crash, was caused by a tyre burst. He said according to witnesses, one minor fled the scene while two others, identified as Harman and Tushar, were found at the spot. He said an investigation was underway and the owner of the car would be summoned and action be taken against the parents as per legal provisions. Jalandhar, March 18 Back from Dubai where the ICC Champions Trophy concluded more than a week ago, cricketer-turned-commentator Harbhajan Singh was seen donning the hat of a Rajya Sabha MP after a long time. At his hometown Jalandhar today, Bhajji donated three ambulances and five wheelchairs purchased from his MPLAD fund to the Civil Surgeon Office and the District Red Cross Society. The ambulances will be used for transporting patients in the district, ensuring their timely treatment. Bhajji also donated five battery-operated wheelchairs to the District Red Cross Society. The wheelchairs will help people with disabilities move about more easily in public places. Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Aggarwal was also present on this occasion. Hoshiarpur, March 18 Labour Party president Jai Gopal Dhiman has handed over a memorandum addressed to Chief Secretary, Punjab, and Deputy Commissioner Ashika Jain to Assistant Commissioner Sanjeev Kumar over the department and administration not taking any action in the case of alleged scam of about Rs 1 crore by accountant Sukhjinder Singh, who was incharge, Mahilpur BDPO, along with his colleagues. Dhiman said he had also attached copies of all evidence of corruption in the information received under the Right to Information Act. He said Secretary, Panchayat, Sandeep Kumar, manager Vijay and employees of e- panchayat are still working on their seats, where they committed the alleged scam. Dhiman said the government, which is talking about zero corruption, was not ready to take action on the report given by BDPO Balwinder Pal against the scamsters. Dhiman said the delay in action was encouraging the corrupt to tamper with the records. Punjab Police win gold in national equestrian championship Aakanksha N Bhardwaj Tribune News Service Jalandhar, March 18 The Punjab Police team is showcasing great performance in the ongoing 43rd AllIndia Police Equestrian Championship and Mounted Police Duty meet 2025. The event is being held at Basic Training Centre, ITBPBhanu, Haryana. This is the second medal for the team in this championship. Gaurav Yadav, Director General of Police, inaugurated the championship that will conclude on March 23. Today, the Punjab Police team comprising DIG Inderbir Singh, DSP Ram Lal, Inspector Youngbir and Sub Inspector Lakhwinder Singh won gold medal in tent pegging Indian file event. DSP Ram Lal is going to retire on April 30. He had played his last National Tent Pegging Championship that was held recently in Jalandhar. He is the recipient of several medals in national and international riders. Ram Lal is one of the most experienced of the PAP team. He started playing at the age of 22 and has 35 years of experience in tent pegging. Before his last run was started in Jalandhar, a commentary in his respect was also made by the experienced riders. For Ram Lal, the connec- tion and love he has held with horses over all these decades is unparalleled. “A horse becomes a rider’s best friend. Rider and his horse understand each other. The chemistry between both of them is incredible,” he said. There should be an understanding between the rider and the horse, only then will coordination follow, which is essential in tent pegging,” he added. Inspector Youngbir Singh has been taking part in national-level tournaments since 1990. He has won several medals at the national level events. Along with him, Head Constable Gurtej Singh, astride horse Prince, won bronze in show jumping event. Head Constable Sandeep Singh also won a silver in show jumping on his horse Akash.
