Two breaches at Baupur Kadim and Ali Kalan villages had inundated several villages in the area, including Ali Khurd, Mand Hussainpur Bulle, Thakkar Kaura and Mand Karmuwala. This year, the onset of monsoon in the northern region and the flooding of the Beas have brought back the memories of 2023 floods for villagers of Sultanpur Lodhi, who live by the banks of the Beas. So there is no cause for alarm.” The SDO added that the Kapurthala administration, along with the Drainage Department, has been regularly reviewing flood preparedness and holding meetings on the issue and the DC also carried out a field visit to the Beas bandhs. Phagwara, July 3 Panic gripped Gandwa village near Phagwara on Wednesday night after a young man riding a scooter was gunned down by three assailants. The murder, which appears to have been a planned attack, has sent shock waves through the local community and raised serious questions about law and order in the region. Ongoing rivalry between two gangster groups was said to be the cause of murder. The victim has been identified as Navjot Kumar. According to sources, Navjot was recently released on bail in a murder case and was travelling on his Activa scooter when three attackers, riding a motorcycle, intercepted him on the village road. Without warning, they opened fire from a close range, shooting multiple rounds into him before fleeing the scene. Navjot was brought to the Civil Hospital in a pool of blood but the doctors declared him brought dead. Capt Harpreet Singh Nali cited two reasons that made his flight special. “Today, my father Surinder Pal Singh Nali is also on board. Hardeep Singh, a 37-year-old resident of Kulpur village near Pojewal, was gunned down late last night by bikeborne miscreants while returning from his fields. According to the brother of the deceased who was also at some distance from his brother, Hardeep was going back home when men on a motorcycle approached and opened fire. Multiple rounds were fired, leaving Hardeep fatally injured at the scene. It seems that the murder is the result of an old rivalry. Villagers and kin of Hardeep Singh (below), who was killed at Kulpur village in Balachaur. “There has been a rivalry going on. I recognised the attackers and will share their names with the police,” he stated while speaking to the media, urging swift action. This incident follows the killing of Amandeep Singh, a 30-year-old from Usmanpur village, just two days before. He was similarly shot dead by unidentified miscreants under mysterious circumstances. Naib tehsildar, clerk suspended for graft Our Correspondent Hoshiarpur, July 3 In a decisive move against corruption, the Financial Commissioner, Revenue, Anurag Verma, has ordered the immediate suspension of naib tehsildar Parveen Kumar and registry clerk Satveer Singh, both posted at Bhunga following serious allegations of corruption. According to official sources, the two revenue officials allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 40,000 for processing the registration of a sale deed. Acting on the gravity of the complaint, the Financial Commissioner issued orders for their suspension with immediate effect. During the suspension period, the headquarters of the accused officers will be relocated to the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Faridkot. Phagwara, July 3 Acting swiftly after seizure of 6.5 quintal of beef from a cold store behind a dhabha in village Chachoki near Phagwara on last night, the police have registered a case against 16 persons, including owner of Jyoti Dhaba. SSP Gaurav Toora said here today that the cows were being slauthered on the Hoshiarpur road “hadda rori” and was being packed in this cold store. Phagwara SP Rupinder Kaur Bhatti said the police have launched a massive hunt to search the accused. Police officials confirmed that five individuals were taken into custody for questioning. “A veterinary team has been constituted to collect and examine meat samples to determine its nature,” said DSP Bharat Bhushan. Elderly woman’s chain snatched in Phagwara Our Correspondent Phagwara, July 3 In a brazen broad daylight incident, two motorcycle-borne assailants snatched the purse of an elderly woman walking near Central Town today, causing minor injuries and sparking concerns about public safety in the area. Rajeev Prabhakar, the victim’s son, informed reporters that his mother Rama Rani was on her way to buy her medicines when the incident occurred just a short distance from her residence. “Two men on a motorcycle approached her, snatched her purse and sped away. In the struggle, my mother fell onto the road and sustained injuries,” he said. According to Prabhakar, the stolen purse contained approximately Rs 4,000. He added that the family immediately informed the police, who have launched an investigation into the matter. Police officials confirmed that they are reviewing CCTV footage from the area, which reportedly shows the assailants executing the snatching in public view.
