Rajwinder Singh of Khanoda village filed a complaint with the SSP. He stated that Ranjeet Singh Sandhu, alias Rana, Mandeep Kaur Sandhu, and Balveer Singh, of Lalwan village, had allegedly duped him of Rs 35 lakh on the promise of sending him to Canada. OC 5.5kg poppy husk seized from PRTC bus in Phagwara Phagwara, August 30 In a major crackdown against drugs and crime, the police on Saturday registered a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act after seizing more than 5.5 kilograms of poppy husk from a Pepsu Road Transport Corporation (PRTC) bus. Driver, conductor arrested SSP Gaurav Toora while giving details said here today that the seizure was made during morning checking at the Phagwara bus stand when the police intercepted a PRTC bus (bearing registration number PB08 EW 8971). On searching, the police recovered two bags containing approximately 5.5 kg of poppy husk from the bus. The bus driver, Ranjit Singh, a resident of Goraya, and conductor Gurwinder Singh, a resident of Dina Nagar, were arrested on the spot. The police also impounded the bus as part of the investigation. Iqbal Singh died at a private hospital on Friday night due to a prolonged stomach infection. The diarrhoea outbreak in the area has affected 70 residents. Blaming contaminated water supply and the Municipal Corporation Jalandhar for the fiasco, Iqbal’s family said their father fell extremely sick on Thursday, following which his health deteriorated on Friday. Residents said for the past three months, the Bashirpura areas were getting extremely dirty water supply. Old supply pipes in the area led to water contamination, they said. At 11 am on Friday, Bashirpura residents held a five-hour dharna against the Municipal Cabinet Minister Mohinder Bhagat at a medical camp set up for diarrhoea-affected residents of New Gautam Nagar in Jalandhar. While Deputy Commissioner Amit Kumar Panchal is taking hourly reports from the Drainage Department regarding the inflow of water, the work of further strengthening the dhussi bundh embankments in some areas is going on a war footing. Sartaj Singh, XEN, Drainage Department, said, “Dhussi bundh embankments in Kapurthala district are completely safe. There is no threat to banks from floodwaters.” He said, “People should not believe in rumours as there is no threat to dhussi bundhs in Kapurthala district.” He said the department had placed more than 50,000 soil bags near embankments in the last 10 days as precautionary measure. He said the work was going on bundh at Mansurwal and Miani Bhagupuria villages in Bholath subdivision. He described the incident as a public execution that exposed the hypocrisy of America, which positions itself as a global advocate for liberty and human rights. “This is not policing. It’s a disgrace to America’s Constitution and to humanity,” Grewal said. The leader compared the LAPD’s approach to that of the Punjab Police, which, according to him, exercises restraint in tense situations. Even though he is lodged in Dibrugarh jail when his constituents are deep in trouble, his massive army of young men is on the job for the last three weeks ensuring relief and rescue operations in his constituency. Both Sultanpur Lodhi and Tarn Taran fall in Amritpal’s Khadoor Sahib Parliamentary constituency. Huge containers loaded with relief material, including langar, packs of biscuits, bottled drinking water, fodder for animals, medicines and other items are daily parked on a safe location close to Baupur Mand in Sultanpur Lodhi from where his teams dispense the relief material among the area people. Today, I was in Kalanaur with my team.” Man found dead in floodwaters Our Correspondent Phagwara, August 30 A 40-year-old man, who went missing on Thursday evening, was found dead in floodwaters near the mand area of Kapurthala district on Friday. The deceased was identified as Boota Mohammad, a resident of the area. According to the police, his body was spotted floating in the flood- ed mand region of Dhilwan. His family members had been searching for him throughout the night after he failed to return home. Preliminary information suggests that Boota Mohammad may have gone near the river for fishing when he slipped and was swept away by the strong current. While the fishing angle was not officially confirmed, the police indicated that a slip leading to drowning in floodwater appears to be the likely cause behind his death. Bholath DSP Karnail Singh said an investigation was initiated based on the statement of the victim’s brother Gulzar Mohammad. The body of the deceased was sent to the Civil Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination, he said. Phagwara SP Gurmit Kaur Chahal said here today that the arrests were made near the Panchhat area under the Rawalpindi police station. A local social worker alerted the police about the movement of two suspects carrying weapon approaching the village on foot. The accused were identified as Prinjanj Kumar, a resident of Valmiki Mohalla, Panchhat village, and Baljit Singh, a resident of Dhiana village, under the Mehtiana police station, Hoshiarpur district. Acting on the tip-off, the police detained both men and, upon search, recovered a .32 bore pistol from their possession. Officials said the two accused were allegedly planning to execute a crime. The search operation was supervised by Assistant Superintendent Dhiraj Kumar. According to officials, the raid resulted in the seizure of two Oppo mobile phones without SIM cards, three Nokia keypad phones along with three batteries, three Nokia chargers, an additional Nokia battery, and one adapter. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gaurav Toora said as per FIR registered by ASI Balbir Singh, a police team comprising ASI Harjinder Singh, ASI Parvinder Singh, Head Constable Lakha Singh, and Constable Ramandeep Singh was on duty at the Hi-Tech naka point when they received a tip-off from an informer about two persons, involved in stealing and selling electric wires, travelling towards Goindwal Sahib on a white Jupiter scooter (bearing registration number PB-18 AA 3585). Soon after, two suspects matching the given description approached naka on the scooter. When signalled to stop, the duo allegedly tried to turn back in panic. With the assistance of other policemen, the scooter was intercepted. On inspection, electric wire, suspected to be stolen, was recovered from the vehicle. — OC
