Tribune News Service 17 licences to be issued to cracker sellers in Kapurthala Aparna Banerji Tribune News Service Kapurthala, September 29 In the flood-ravaged Kapurthala, the district administration today sought applications from those willing to seek licences for sale of crackers ahead of Diwali this year. While applications can be submitted until October 6, the draw will take place on October 8. Farmers across flood-hit villages said the villages would be in no position to celebrate Diwali and Bandhi Chhor Diwas this year. DC Amit Kumar Panchal said 17 licences for temporary storage and sale of firecrackers will be issued through draw of lots at the places specified by the authority in Kapurthala this year. Under this, six temporary licences will be issued for sub-divisions Kapurthala and Phagwara, 2 each for Sultanpur Lodhi and Bholath and one for Dhilwan. While last year, the cracker sale sites were designated at PUDA markets in Sultanpur Lodhi and Kapurthala among other spots, this year the sites are likely to be shifted. While over a 100 villages were impacted by the floods in Kapurthala, the effects of the flood still persist in many villages where several feet of sand cover fields and others where waters are yet to recede. Paramjit Singh, from Baupur village said, “Not just in the flood-hit belt, but across the city areas too, Diwali festivities are going to be affected this year. Water still persists at some villages and a thick layer of sand has covered fields. All crops are lost. It is going to be a sordid Diwali this year.” Meanwhile, regarding licences, the DC said those who wish to get a temporary licence can submit their applications in the district’s Sewa Kendras till 4 pm on October 6. The draw in this regard will be held on October 8 at 3 pm in the meeting hall of the DC’s office, Kapurthala. Jalandhar, September 29 Despite procurement operations beginning two weeks ago, the paddy arrival in mandis remains sluggish. So far, only 10,775 metric tonnes (MT) of paddy have been reported from villages across the district, with 9,660 MT already procured. However, officials say that it will pick up in October. At the main grain market alone, 12,335 quintals of paddy have arrived. The district has a total of 79 mandis. Farmers also said due to adverse weather conditions, the lower yield of paddy crop was reported. Arhtiyas (commission agents) mentioned that some farmers initially brought in high-moisture paddy, but the issue is now largely resolved as the grain is drying well under the sun. A visit to the main grain market revealed low farmer turnout — only two farmers, Lachman Singh and Balwinder Singh from Lamma Pind — were present. “We have brought all our crop and it has already been pur- c m y b Labourers dry the paddy crop at the grain market in Jalandhar on Monday. Nawanshahr DC Ankurjit Singh emphasized that the district administration is committed to ensuring all necessary facilities for farmers, labourers, and commission agents to carry out the procurement process in an efficient and organized manner. Nawanshahr district is expected to procure approximately 3.88 lakh metric tonnes of paddy this season. The Minimum Support Price (MSP) for paddy has been fixed at ~2,389 per quintal. Subeg Singh, a farmer from Dhogri village, said the yield was less this year and also because of high moisture content this time, disease was also attacking the crop.
