TRIBUNE PHOTO: SARABJIT SINGH Festive RushWomen throng markets to buy bangles, henna Tribune Reporters Jalandhar, October 9 The city’s markets remained abuzz on Thursday with women venturing out in the markets to buy stylish, designer bangles for Karwachauth falling tomorrow. From traditional, simple, redglass bangles to lack or silkthreaded bangles with hangings, shopkeepers put up stalls of the best available collection with them to attract customers. Stone or zircon-studded, colourful, metal-textured bangles remained a favourite among the young women. Bangles bought, the next in agenda was to get henna applied. In Model Town, there were 20 stalls of mehndi walas, all having a long waiting of up to an hour. Charges for simple mehndi designs touched Rs 500 for a single hand and went up to Rs 1,500 for more exquisite patterns. “Every woman getting mehndi applied from us is getting her husband’s name written on her hand. It takes me 1015 minutes to do a hand. While some go in for mehndi on just one hand, there are others who ask for elbow length designs. Newly weds are also getting mehndi applied on feet and legs”, said Suresh Kumar, a UP-based mehndi artist. Many college-going girls too made a quick buck on the occasion. “I had a tie-up with a parlour for two days. She paid me Rs 400 for every hand and kept Rs 100 herself. But it was still a good deal for me as she provided me with 30 customers in two days. I did not even have time to sit up, take a break or have my meals”, said Mehnaaz, a young henna expert. Sweet shops in the city also remained bedecked with customers queuing up to buy sweet mathis and phenian included in sargi, a pre-dawn meal. A farmer shows his damaged paddy crop. FILE Shortfall of 10 lakh paddy bags likely from flood-hit areas Aakanksha N Bhardwaj Tribune News Service Kapurthala, October 9 This is usually the season when farmers across Punjab begin reaping fruits of their hard work and bring their harvest to mandis. But this year, the mood is somber in the district. A combination of haldi rog (a crop disease), erratic weather, and devastating floods has led to a sharp decline in the expected paddy yield. Officials at the Kapurthala mandi are expecting a shortfall of over 10 lakh paddy bags from the flood-affected areas alone. In 2023–24, when floods hit the areas, 76,30,240 quintals of paddy had arrived in the mandis. The following year, arrivals slightly improved to 82,05,889 quintals. One of the worst-hit regions is Sultanpur Lodhi and adjoining blocks where the crop on 32,053 acres was destroyed due to heavy flooding two month ago. Mandi officials and arhtiyas (commission agents) now say arrivals from these flood affected areas are expected to be very less. “The situation is heartbreaking,” said Paramjit Singh, a farmer leader from Baupur village, adding that “Every year, farmers harvest their produce and return to mandis. But this time, it’s all gloomy. People are trying to rebuild their lives, and it’s getting tougher with each passing day.” Adding to the crisis, many farmers are also struggling with mounting debts.
