Commissioner of Police Dhanpreet Kaur said under the supervision of Inspector Sarabjit Singh, the Crime Branch team apprehended one person identified as Joel Kalyan of Sarai Khas village during routine patrolling and checking of suspicious persons. From his possession, 20 g of heroin and Rs 1.5 lakh drug money was seized. OC TWO-WHEELERS THEFT, FIR LODGED Phagwara: The Shahkot police have booked unidentified miscreants on the charge of stealing a motorcycle and scooter. Surjit Singh of Kakarr Kalan village and Rakesh Kumar of Model Town, Shahkot, complained to the police that unidentified accused had stolen their motorcycles. Sunni of Salaicha Road complained to the police that his scooter had been stolen. OC 3 ARRESTED UNDER NDPS ACT Phagwara: The Nurmahal police have arrested a person on the charge of selling intoxicants. As many as 72 tablets were recovered from the possession of accused Lehmabar Singh of Pati Badal Ki, Bundala village. A case has been registered under Sections 22/ 61/ 85 of the NDPS Act against the accused. The Nakodar Sadar police arrested Jatindar, alias Kaka, a resident of Raheempur village, with 11 tablets. The Lohian Khas police arrested Akash Kumar Bagi of Mureedwal village, with 25 tablets. oc OUTSOURCED STAFF ON STRIKE Hoshiarpur: The MC Outsourced Employees Union has now launched an indefinite strike to press for their demands. Members of the Safai Mazdoor Federation are also supporting the strike, led by president Kamal Bhatti. Outsourced employees gathered at the corporation office and raised slogans against the government. Bhatti stated that outsourced employees working in various departments have begun a struggle for their demands. The strike began in Hoshiarpur and will gradually spread , for which the government is solely responsible. oc TWO 'DRUG ADDICTS' HELD Phagwara: The Bilga police have arrested a person on the charge of consuming heroin. The accused has been identified as Sukhdev Lal, alias Saabi, of Billga village. A case has been registered under the NDPS Act against the accused. The Lohian Khas police arrested 'drug addict' Indarjit Singh of Jalalpur Kalan village. OC Jalandhar, October 8 A migrant woman of Garha in Phillaur has alleged that an SHO of the Jalandhar rural police sexually harassed her 14-year-old daughter, when she along with her daughter approached the police to register a rape complaint in August. Holding a press conference at Phillaur, members of the Lok Insaaf Manch (LIM) on Wednesday reiterated the allegations levelled by the woman and sought strict action against the SHO. After the manch’s complaint to the SSP the SHO , has also been transferred. On October 5, an FIR was registered against 18-year-old boy, who allegedly raped the girl. Union members said if the SHO is not suspended, they will launch an agitation on the issue. The victim girl and her mother and father accompanied the manch members during the press conference. Speaking to mediapersons, the father of the girl alleged that his daughter was raped by the 18-year-old neighbour, also hailing from a migrant family, on the intervening night of August 23 and 24. He alleged, “When we reached the Civil Hospital, Phillaur, the next day, doctors asked us first to go to Phillaur police station only after which the treatment could begin as it was a police case. We all went to the police station and complained to SHO Bhushan Kumar. He kept telling us that there was no rape. Later, he took my daughter and wife to another room and again said no rape had taken place, hence no medical could be done.” The father alleged that they were sent back that day and asked to come again. He alleged, “Subsequently, he called my wife and daughter and sometimes my wife alone and took her to a room where no other women were present. He touched and harassed my wife and daughter. For a month, my daughter’s medical hasn’t been conducted as he refused to register a case.” LIM president Jarnail Phillaur alleged, “It is after the case came to our notice and proofs were shared with us that we took up the issue with the police. A case has finally been registered on October 5, over a month after the incident. After our complaint to the SSP last night, the SHO has also been transferred. We demand the dismissal of the SHO, failing which an agitation will be launched.” The same claims were also reiterated by former sarpanch of Garha Raj Kumar. Lok Insaaf Manch Punjab members president Jarnail Phillaur, Parshottam Phillaur, senior leaders Master Hans Raj, Ramji Das Ganna village, Som Nath Sekhupur among others were also present. Speaking to The Tribune, DSP Sarwan Singh Bal said, “People may keep making claims, but a conclusion in the case can only be reached after due verification. The SHO has been transferred.” 2 JIT colonies to be handed over to MC soon Tribune News Service Jalandhar, October 8 Jalandhar Improvement Trust (JIT) Chairman Ramneek Singh Randhawa has passed a resolution for handing over of Surya Enclave and Maharaja Ranjit Singh Avenue to the Municipal Corporation. The resolution has now been forwarded to MC officials for approval. The move initiated with the efforts of AAP Jalandhar Central halqa incharge Nitin Kohli which has brought the muchneeded relief to residents of Surya Enclave and Maharaja Ranjit Singh Avenue. The areas, which were under the management of the Jalandhar Improvement Trust, will now be handed over to the Municipal Corporation soon, paving way for long-pending development works to begin. Essential infrastructure projects such as road repairs, streetlight installation and water supply improvements had been delayed in the areas. Iron rods pierce through car, killing 2 ~289 cr to be spent in Jalandhar Tribune News Service Jalandhar, October 8 In a tragic accident at Kartarpur on Tuesday, two young men lost their lives when a truck carrying iron rods suddenly braked, causing the heavy iron pieces to fatally impale them. The victims died instantly at the scene. Both deceased were residents of Amritsar and have been identified as Chand and Nikhil. The Kartarpur police have registered an FIR against the truck driver, who is absconding. The accident took place near a farm in Kartarpur. The deceased along with their three friends Shubham, Amrik Kohli and Rudra Mahajan were heading back to Amritsar when a truck driver, in front of them, suddenly applied brakes, causing a col- lision with the car coming behind it. The crash caused the iron rods loaded on the back of the truck to break loose and smash through the windshield of the car. The rods pierced through the torsos of the two young men seated in the front, leading to their instant death. The three friends sitting behind have also sustained serious injuries. The group of friends had come to Jalandhar to attend a religious event at Shakti Nagar. They were returning after attending the event. The injured trio have been admitted to the hospital. The police also sent the bodies of the deceased for post-mortem. Truck driver applies brake, causing mishap district under ‘Roshan Punjab’ Tribune News Service Jalandhar, October 8 Under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s ambitious project ‘Roshan Punjab’ aimed at freeing the state from power cuts, Minister for Horticulture, Freedom Fighters and Defence Services Welfare Mohinder Bhagat today inaugurated a 31.5 MVA power transformer worth about Rs 4 crore at Focal Point-2, Jalandhar. Addressing a gathering, the minister said the project has been launched to provide uninterrupted power supply to people. Under this project, Rs 289.20 crore will be spent in Jalandhar district for the installation of new transformers, new power substations, new lines and feeder deload- Two youth death in Truck and car accident near Kartarpur in Jalandhar. ing. He said the works include Rs145.90 crore for deloading of 11 KV feeders, Rs 25.50 crore for new distribution transformers, Rs 12.30 crore for enhancing transformer capacity, Rs 29.30 crore for setting up 66 KV power substations, Rs 44.50 crore for increasing capacity of 66 KV transformers and Rs 31.70 crore for installation of 66 KV lines. AAP leader Dinesh Dhall was also present. Bhagat said that upon completion, these works will significantly improve power supply and ensure uninterrupted electricity for industrial connections as well. He added that the 66 KV Focal Point substation, whose transformer capacity was earlier 20 MVA, has now been enhanced to 31.5 MVA, ensur- ing stable power supply for industries in the area. Later, the Minister also planted a sapling at the Focal Point power station, urging people to contribute towards environmental conservation. Project gets going in Hoshiarpur In a major step towards strengthening the power infrastructure in Hoshiarpur, bifurcation works worth ?298 crore were launched today under the government’s ambitious “Roshan Punjab Project.” The inauguration ceremony was held at 11 KV substation in Hoshiarpur, where MLA Brahm Shankar Jimpa commenced the project. MLA Jimpa said the project will give new direction to the state’s power sector. — OC Guards to be deployed Seechewal gives water tankers Fresh rain spell has in 23 govt hospitals to four Kapurthala villages villagers in fear again Our Correspondent Phagwara, October 8 The government has decided to deploy security guards in government hospitals that provide round-the-clock medical services. The initiative seeks to curb the rising incidents of violence and assault against medical personnel in public healthcare institutions across the state. Under the pilot project, 200 security guards will be stationed across 23 district hospitals. The deployment will be carried out through the Punjab Ex-Servicemen Corporation. If the project proves successful, the state plans to extend the initiative to other hospitals as well. According to official sources, the recruitment process will be completed by the end of October. The guards will be appointed on an outsourced basis until March 31, 2026, and the recruitment will follow the state’s reservation policy. Their salaries will be paid under the schemes run by the Punjab Health Systems Corporation. Doctors across Punjab have welcomed the government’s decision, calling it a muchneeded step to ensure a safer and more secure work environment. Members of the PCMS Association said the move will help create a sense of confidence among hospital staff. The deployment plan includes the following allocation of guards across district hospitals — Amritsar (11), Barnala (7), Bathinda (11), Faridkot (7), Fatehgarh Sahib (7), Fazilka (9), Ferozepur (9), Gurdaspur (9), Hoshiarpur (9), Jalandhar (11), Kapurthala (9), Ludhiana (12), Malerkotla (7), Moga (9), Muktsar Sahib (9), Pathankot (7), MKH Patiala (11), Ropar (7), Sangrur (9), Mohali (9), SBS Nagar (7), and Tarn Taran (7). Our Correspondent Phagwara, October 8 Rajya Sabha MP Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal has allocated over Rs 14.63 lakh from his discretionary funds to supply water tankers to four villages in Kapurthala. Each tanker, with a 5,000litre capacity, is expected to aid environmental conservation efforts and fulfil daily water requirements for the communities. The villages benefiting from this initiative are Jainpur, Shahwala Andarisa, Haibatpur and Talwandi Chaudhrian. Representatives from these gram panchayats expressed their gratitude, noting that the tankers will be invaluable not only for routine village functions but also for weddings in Dalit families. The tankers will help water plants around the villages and support various social gatherings. Aakanksha N Bhardwaj Tribune News Service Jalandhar, October 8 Villagers from flood-affected regions, who had just returned to their homes after weeks of hardships, are again living in fear as the fresh spell of rain has threatened to undo their difficult recovery. After struggling to rebuild their lives, many families had started to clean and repair their homes, hoping to return to normalcy. However, the return of rain has brought back painful memories of the devastation they previously endured. “We had just started picking up the pieces,” said Satnam from one of the worst-hit villages. “Now every drop of rain makes us anxious. We don’t know if we’ll have to leave our homes again.” He shared that his house had developed cracks and he along with his family were sleeping under a cowshed as the rooms were not safe to sleep. Paramjit Singh, a farmer leader from Baupur village, said the water levels rose again after which there is a sense of fear again. “Nothing is clear what will happen,” he said. The emotional and financial toll on villagers has been immense. Flooding in the Sutlej had led to severe erosion of its embankment and washed away portions of land where houses had been built, tragedy struck Mandala Channa village in Shahkot subdivision. Four houses belonging to daily wage labourers were reduced to last month. The houses belonged to four brothers — Channa Singh, Sona Singh, Jagdish Singh and the late Prem Singh — whose families are now displaced and distraught. They have currently taken temporary shelter at the residence of village sarpanch Satnam Singh.
The Tribune, now published from Chandigarh, started publication on February 2, 1881, in Lahore (now in Pakistan). It was started by Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, a public-spirited philanthropist, and is run by a trust comprising four eminent persons as trustees.

The English edition apart, the 133-year-old Tribune has two sister publications, Punjabi Tribune (in Punjabi) and Dainik Tribune (in Hindi).
