INBRIEF 5 ARRESTED FOR SELLING LIQUOR Phagwara: The Nakodar Sadar police have arrested three villagers on the charge of brewing and selling illicit country-made liquor. The accused have been identified as Rajindar Kumar, Sarbann Dass and Kashmir Singh, residents of Gill village, and 12 bottles of hooch and 200 litre of lahan were recovered from them. The police arrested Rolu of Fatehpur village, with 11 bottles of hooch. The Lohian Khas police arrested Davindar Singh of Sajjanwal village with 60 kg lahan. OC 2 WOMEN BOOKED FOR CHEATING Phagwara: The Nakodar police have booked three persons, including two women, on charges of cheating and criminal conspiracy. The accused has been identified as Kulwant Singh of Kotla Baghu, Nakodar, and his wife, Jaswindar Kaur; and Paramjit Kaur of Aujla Jogi village in Kapurthala, and living in Australia. Gurpreet Singh of Kotla Jogi village in Kapurthala told the SSP that it was agreed before marriage that both would settle in Australia, as Paramjit had passed IELTS and he spent Rs 17 lakh for her migration. She went in 2020, but did not sponsor him, thus cheated him. oc BOOKED FOR STEALING BIKE Shahkot: The police have booked an unidentified person on the charge of stealing a motorcycle. Majot Singh of Saidpur Jhirri village, complained to the police that he had parked his motorcycle on Meinwal Road on October 9, from where it was stolen. A case has been registered. oc 3 BOOKED FOR STEALING TREES Shahkot: The Shahkot police have booked three persons for stealing trees. The accused have been identified as Deesha of Gobing Nagar, Shahkot, Shub Kant, of Mohalla Dhurkot, Shahkot, and Dev Raj of Sarangwal village. Kashmir Kaur of Jain Colony, Shahkot, complained to the police that the accused cut eucalyptus trees from her plot and sold them. oc PSPCL WORKER ELECTROCUTED Phagwara: A PSPCL employee was electrocuted. The deceased has been identified as Amarjit, alias Samma, a resident of Talwanni village and was working in the grid substation, Nurmahal. The deceased was repairing a transformer in a village when he accidentally touched an electric line and died on the spot. OC Good Samaritans revive flood-hit Baupur school Man held within hours of firing at dairy worker Ludhiana NGO provides infra to school, stationery to students Another accused still on the run Tribune News Service Our Correspondent Sultanpur Lodhi, October 12 In a heartening display of community support, good Samaritans and members of the Ludhiana Ophthalmological Society have come forward to revive Government Primary School, Baupur Jadid, one of the worst-affected schools in the area following recent devastating floods. The school, which lost its infrastructure and supplies in the floods, has now received essential items, including fans, desks, tables, chairs, a water cooler, inverter, podium, RO filter, and other equipment. These contributions have breathed a new life into the school, allowing it to resume functioning for its 35 students. “After the floods, everything in the school was damaged. We were left with nothing,” staff members said. Yadwinder Singh, schoolteacher said, “The Ludhiana Ophthalmological Society contacted us a week ago and today they provided us with everything we needed. We are extremely grateful.” Phagwara, October 12 The police with the help of villagers arrested one of the two accused within hours after a daring daylight shooting incident in village Bohani on Saturday morning.The accused was identified as Shameer of village Behrumpur near Phillaur. Panic gripped the otherwise peaceful village when two masked assailants opened fire at Arun Kumar, a local dairy worker, while he was on his regular milk delivery job. The attackers, riding a motorcycle, fired multiple shots without warning, leaving the victim seriously injured. Arun sustained bullet wounds to his right hand, left leg, and back before collapsing on the roadside. Local residents immediately rushed him to the Civil Hospital, Phagwara, where he is undergoing treatment and is stated to be out of danger. DSP Bharat Bhushan rushed to the spot along with a police team and cordoned off the area. SSP Gaurav Toora monitored Good Samaritans from Ludhiana come to aid of students at Baupur Jadid, Sultanpur Lodhi. In addition to restoring the school, the society also distributed stationery and learning materials to the children. The school staff especially called children to take the stationery. Yadwinder Singh, who is also associated with the Government Teachers Union, has been actively supporting flood-affected families in the region. The union also helped several students whose homes were damaged or destroyed. Among those who received aid is Raj Kaur, school’s cook, whose house was swept away in the floods. She was recently given financial assistance of Rs 21,000. A Class VI student living in a dilapidated house received Rs 5,100, while two other students whose homes were completely destroyed were given Rs 11,000 each. With the support of compassionate individuals and organisations, the school is now on the path to recovery, offering a safe learning environment for its young students again. Forensic experts were also called in to collect vital clues from the scene, and CCTV footage from surrounding areas is being examined. Acting on a tip-off, police teams launched a coordinated search operation in the surrounding villages. With the help of vigilant villagers, Shameer was apprehended. His accomplice Sabi fled. SP Gurmit Kaur Chahal said a case has been registered and efforts are on to recover the weapon used in the crime. Police sources indicated that the motive behind the attack is still unknown, though initial inquiries suggest that the victim had no known enmity. All possible angles, including personal rivalry and mistaken identity, are being explored. Minor girl run over by truck at bus stop Jalandhar, October 12 A 16-year-old girl lost her life when she was crushed under the wheels of a truck. The deceased girl, identified as Romanpreet Kaur, died at the Sanghowal bus stand. The incident happened on Saturday afternoon. A case has been registered by the Mehatpur police and the truck driver has been arrested. Romanpreet was at the bus stop along with her parents and was waiting for a bus to Mehatpur. A truck driver trying to navigate the deep potholes on a road, reportedly did not see her and ctushed her, leaving her dead. An FIR has been registered at the Mehatpur police station under Sections 106 and 281 of the BNS. The 60-year-old truck driver identified as Ram Singh of Goraya has also been arrested. SHO, Mehatpur, said the post-mortem of the girl was conducted after which the body was handed over to her parents. Her last rites were conducted today. — TNS Travel agent dupes Green FellingLandowners to plant 1,000 grown trees villager of ~1.90 lakh Aparna Banerji Tribune News Service Our Correspondent Phagwara, October 12 On a complaint lodged by Inderjit Singh of village Jagpalpur near Phagwara, the police have registered a case against a fake travel agent Hira Lal of village Gahor near Goraya for allegedly duping a man of Rs 1.90 lakh on the pretext of sending him abroad. According to the complaint, Inderjeet alleged that Heera Lal took Rs1.90 lakh from him with the assurance of arranging his travel abroad. However, after receiving the amount, the accused neither sent him abroad, nor returned the money, leading the complainant to approach the police for action. Inderjeet stated that Heera Lal claimed to have connec- tions to secure overseas employment and travel documents. When repeated requests for either the promised travel arrangement or a refund went unanswered, he decided to report the matter to the authorities. DSP Bharat Bhushan said acting on his complaint, a case was registered and an inquiry was initiated The police said preliminary investigations have been launched to verify the allegations and collect evidence regarding the financial transaction and communications between the parties. Jalandhar, October 12 After relentless protests and complaints, an agreement has been reached between landowners and Tejasvi Minhas and other environmentalists over cutting of trees on Jalandhar Cantt Bypass Road. Around 100 trees were felled illegally on September 28 and 29 on the road, which had infuriated activists, who wrote to the CM. Residents also held a protest at the site. As per agreement, 1,000 fully grown trees of minimum 810 ft height will be planted at the site and the nearby areas and in a radius of 5 km. This will cover Kot Kalan, Khusropur, Sofi Pind and Kukkar Pind. The trees will be provided free of cost by landowners. Trees like arjun, moringa, Activists protest against felling of trees in Jalandhar. neem, talhi, amaltas, peepal will be planted and no ornamental plants be used. The full maintenance of the trees for one year shall be done by the landowners. Maintenance shall include regular watering, de-weeding, FILE providing support, cutting/setting any broken branches, etc and replacement of trees if it dies. The procurement and plantation of most tress shall be done around FebruaryMarch next year. With these demands met, environmentalists and villagers of the nearby areas have agreed that no protest will be held and no complaints be filed. All parties will ensure the uplift and preservation of environment. Activists said 50 grown trees have already been planted at the site, which shall be protected by a tree guard soon. Environmentalist Minhas, who first took up the issue of the felling of 100 trees illegally by a mall owner, said, “I appreciate the gesture by the landowners to compensate for the felled trees. Punjab has the lowest tree cover in the country and the need of the hour is to preserve these and increase the green cover. I hope that these 1,000 trees shall help improve our environment and air quality. One of the clubs senior players and coach, Raghvinder Pal Singh, a retired SDO from the BSNL, has been playing a pivotal role postretirement. He not only supports the club’s activities in Nawanshahr, but also dedicates his mornings to coaching children in his native village Babbar Mazara, before they leave for school. His goal is to mentor these young players like his own children and help shape them into successful footballers and responsible citizens, bringing pride to the club and the nation. Similarly, Praveen Kumar, ASI with Punjab Police, is contributing both at the club in Nawanshahr and by training budding players in his village Sloh, after fulfilling his official duties. Activists said the trees will be sourced between February and March from the nursery where the trees are kept for sale. 3 nabbed with 16.8 gm heroin Jalandhar, October 12 The Jalandhar Commissionerate police station, Bhargo Camp team, has arrested three individuals and seized 16.8 gram of heroin from their possession. Commissioner of Police Jalandhar, Dhanpreet Kaur, said under the special campaign against suspicious individuals and drug peddlers, the police team apprehended three persons. The arrested individuals have been identified as Neeraj, resident of House No. 93/2, Bhargo Camp, Jalandhar; Manav, of Bhargo Camp, Jalandhar, and Kunal, resident of House No. 66/11, Bhargo Camp, Jalandhar. The police seized 5.20 gram of heroin from Neeraj, 5.6 gram from Manav, and six gram from Kunal. The accused have been remanded to police custody for interrogation. — TNS
