Safai karamcharis stage protest over privatisation Tribune News Service Jalandhar, December 1 Safai karamchari unions staged a major protest today, raising slogans against the Municipal Corporation, urging the authorities to address and fulfil their long-pending demands. The unions have opposed the proposed privatisation of waste collection, for which a tender of Rs 143 crore was being considered. They argue that privatisation would adversely affect their livelihoods and working conditions. An active union leader said the workers have also been demanding fresh recruitment of safai karamcharis to address staff shortages. The employees warned that they would stop work from December 2 if their demands remain ignored. “We will proceed on an indefinite strike,” he said. Lohian gangrape 4th Health employees go on pen-down strike against delay in salary release accused minor, held Tribune News Service Tribune News Service Jalandhar, December 1 An absconding accused in the Lohian gangrape case has been arrested by the Jalandhar rural police. The police had earlier arrested three accused in the gruesome gang rape case of a mother and daughter in a room in a field at Lohian in the wee hours of November 24. While the three accused were adults, the fourth accused is a minor. Informing the press about the gangrape case, SSP , Jalandhar rural, Harvinder Singh Virk said around 12.30 am, a migrant woman and daughter (aged 35 and 19), liv- ing in a village in Lohian, were gang-raped repeatedly by four persons at gunpoint. The woman’s son-in-law and his 5-month-old child along with two more children had been held hostage in a separate room while the heinous crime was carried out by the four men. Shockingly, one of the rapists was a minor. A case had been registered on November 24 and action was initiated. While three accused (aged between 18.5 and 19 years) were arrested by the Lohian police on November 29. The trio arrested days ago were held along with two motorcycles and weapons used in the incident. The SSP said a minor, aged 14, involved in the case has now been arrested. Legal action is being taken against the minor as per the rules of the Juvenile Justice Board, he added. The investigation in the case is going on at a fast pace and further action is being taken. Jalandhar, December 1 A pen-down strike by National Health Mission (NHM) employees began on Monday against the repeated delay in the release of salaries. Employees said the salaries of NHM employees serving under the Health Department, Punjab, in Jalandhar district were often being released by the government with a delay of months due to which there is resentment among the employees against the department and the government. They said they had made requests to the government, but its attitude and of the department was disappointing. They added that it was surprising that salaries were released to regular employees across Punjab in the first week of every month, but the NHM employees working on nominal salaries on contract had been made to wait. They said all employees had gone on a pen-down strike from December 1. This protest will continue until a concrete policy is formulated regarding salaries. Two arrested for murder bid in Nawanshahr village 5 months on, 2 held in firing near gym Tribune News Service Nawanshahr, December 1 The police have arrested two individuals who allegedly attempted to enter a house in village Bakapur with the intent to murder Gurmeet Singh. The police recovered a .32 bore pistol, two magazines, and 16 cartridges from the accused. The accused have been iden- tified as Gagandeep Singh and Harman Singh, both residents of Patti Phallia, Khadoor Sahib, Goindwal Sahib. The district police apprehended two suspects on November 29. According to the SSP Atinder Pal Singh , said two armed men had scaled the boundary wall of his house and forced entry. The intruders were allegedly demanding that Gurmeet Singh be brought outside, threatening to kill him and the family, if their demand was not met. Hearing the family’s cries for help, neighbours gathered and managed to overpower the two assailants. Acting swiftly, SI Bikram Singh reached the spot, took both suspects into custody and registered an FIR. c m y b The SSP stated that the accused revealed that they had been sent by Kuldeep Singh, a resident of Khadoor Sahib, lodged in Ferozepur jail. Kuldeep had allegedly hired them to eliminate Gurmeet in exchange for Rs 3 lakh, of which Rs 50,000 had already been paid, with the remaining amount to be delivered after the crime. Tribune News Service Jalandhar, December 1 Five months since the incident, the Jalandhar Commissionerate Police has arrested two absconding accused involved in a firing incident near ‘Off the Grid’ gym, Model Town, here. The police have also recovered two .32 bore pistols and two car- tridges from their possession. Commissioner of Police Dhanpreet Kaur said an FIR was registered on July 2. On July 23, the police had arrested Bhupinder Singh, resident of Aur, Nawanshahr, and recovered one pistol and one cartridge from him. Activist Simranjit Singh had been targeted during the firing incident. He had rushed back to the gym after the assailants had missed the shots. Further investigation and technical sources led the police to arrest two more accused involved in the incident. The accused have been identified as Rajat and Hardeep Singh, both residents of Pholariwal. Police have recovered two pistols and two cartridges from them.
