Aided school staff sans salary since Stretch from Nakodar Chowk-Workshop April, to court arrest in Tarn Taran Chowk a nightmare for commuters Our Correspondent Phagwara, November 5 Teachers and employees of all aided schools in Kapurthala district have announced a massive “Jail Bharo Andolan” against the government’s “anti-aided school policies.” The decision was taken during an emergency meeting held at Ramgarhia Girls Senior Secondary School, Old Post Office Road, Phagwara, under the leadership of Monica Sharma, district president of the Aided School Teachers’ Union. Representatives of school managements, social organisations, pensioners and staff members participated in the deliberations. Addressing a gathering, Sharma said aided school employees across the state have been left without salaries for the past eight months, forcing them into severe financial hardships. Despite repeated reminders, the government has not released salary from April to December 2025. The participants unanimously resolved that if the salary is not released by November 6, all aided school staff will court arrest in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Tarn Taran on November 7. Sharma revealed that a joint meeting of the Punjab State Government Aided School Teachers and Employees Union, Punjab Aided School Pensioners Association and Aided School Management Association was held in Tarn Taran during which it was decided that nearly 1,700 serving employees and over 6,000 retired teachers and staff will court arrest after holding massive protest march in Tarn Taran markets. The unions also warned that if the district administration refuses to arrest the protesters on November 7, demonstrations will be expanded to towns and villages across the Tarn Taran assembly constituency on November 8 and 9. They will highlight that the teachers, responsible for education of 1.76 lakh students in aided schools, have been surviving without pay for several months. c m y b Aparna Banerji Tribune News Service Jalandhar, November 5 Commuters in Jalandhar are facing severe hardships as the road from Nakodar Chowk to Workshop Chowk remains dug up for months due to the prolonged surface water project. The incomplete work has created traffic bottlenecks and civic chaos across the city. This stretch, lined with restaurants, markets, schools, and hospitals, should have been prioritized with proper sanitation measures. Instead, commuters endure dustladen air, traffic snarls, and health hazards daily. The situation worsens during rain, turning the dug-up roads into waterlogged messes. Kapurthala Chowk, a critical junction with several hospitals nearby, is particularly dangerous. Rocks and uneven surfaces damage vehicles, while dust soils commuters’ clothes within minutes. The nearby MGN School intersection becomes a nightmare during rush hour as hundreds navigate through rubble and congestion. Deepak, a regular commuter, shares: “Travelling here is a nightmare. The bad road has made life miserable for months. Rocks and bumps have damaged my vehicle, and during rains, we wade through deep water. Two-wheelers are covered in dust by the time we reach our A file photo of incomplete surface water project in Jalandhar destination. The work should have been completed in a time-bound manner.” Other stretches, including Chick Chick Chowk and the road from Nakodar Chowk to Ravidas Chowk, remain dug up, forcing residents to use barely half the road. Harjinder Singh Lada, Councillor (Ward 48) and Chairman B&R, said: “The project was delayed due to repeated rains. Pipe-laying work between Nakodar Chowk and Kapurthala Chowk is complete, and linking will be done within a day or two. Road laying will begin within a week. We are prioritizing pending stretches, and work will start on several this week.”
