During the meeting, Deputy Commissioner Ghanshyam Thori asked the officials to identify areas with a low voter turnout during the previous elections so that special awareness campaigns can be organised there. The Deputy Commissioner said that all voters must exercise their right to franchise as it is important for a healthy democracy. He added that voters need to know about the government that would be better able to serve their interests so that they can make their choice accordingly. He added that by not voting, the eligible voters are showing disinterest in the set-up which is against the interests of a growing nation. The Amritsar Rural Police have registered separate FIRs in this connection. Sukhbir Singh and his wife Amandeep Kaur died in a hitand-run case at Basarke Gilla village here on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday. The incident came to light yesterday when their bodies were found in fields. They had told to return home by evening. He said when they did not return, they called them repeatedly but did not find any response. GURBAXPURI Our Correspondent Tarn Taran, March 13 The city police arrested two persons, residents of Uttarakhand, with 1.5 kg of opium and ~2.5 lakh as drug money from Tarn Taran town on Tuesday. The accused were in a car having the registration number of Uttarakhand. The drug smugglers have been identified as Ranjit Singh and Kunwarpal Singh, residents of Shaheed Udham Singh Nagar district (Uttarakhand). DSP Tarsem Masih said here on Wednesday that both accused were seen roaming in an XUV (UK-18-Q-2220) under suspicious circum- stances on the local Shani Mandir road here on Tuesday. A police party led by ASI Gurdeep Singh installed a naka on the road and the car was signalled to stop. The accused tried to flee the spot, but the car occupants were nabbed and on being searched by the police, 1.5 kg of opium and ~2.5 drug money were recovered from the smugglers. Their car had been taken into custody by the city police. The DSP said a case under Sections 18 (B), 29, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act has been registered against the accused. The smugglers were presented in a court here on Wednesday and the court sent them to three-day police custody. Amritsar, March 13 In view of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the city police along with paramilitary forces today carried out a flag march in the walled city area here. The main objective behind the flag march was to instill a sense of security among the residents. The teams were headed by Dr Darpan Ahluwalia, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (City-I) and Surinder Singh, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Central). The flag march was conducted in areas falling under Division E police station, Division D police station, Gate Hakima and Islamabad police stations here. “The flag march was organised from Hall Gate to Bharawan Da Dhaba, Katra Jaimal Singh, Godam Mohalla, Anngarh, Bharadiwal, Fatahpur etc,” said Dr Pragya Jain, Deputy Commissioner of Police. The artists performing in the programme sang songs to educate the schoolchildren and participants to stay away from drugs. Many social organisations also participated in the programmes. At the event, the students took an oath not to indulge in drugs and to participate in sports. The children participated in judo, wrestling, and tug-of-war competitions on the occasion. The Deputy Commissioner of Police, Satvir Singh, distributed trophies and certificates to the winners. Police officials urged the gathering to cooperate with the police to eradicate the menace of drugs from society and asked them to share information with the police about those indulging in drug trafficking in their areas. Amritsar, March 13 A man was allegedly killed by his wife and her paramour at Mandiala village falling under the Chatiwind police station here two days ago. However, the incident came to light when the brother of the deceased, identified as Baldev Singh (35), lodged a complaint with the police in this connection. The victim’s brother and other relatives found strangulation marks on the body of the deceased, which led to suspicion that the he was killed. According to complainant Resham Singh, brother of the deceased, his wife Sonu Kaur allegedly had illicit relations with Arshdeep Singh of the village. Arshdeep was also a friend of the deceased. Sub-Inspector Kuldeep Rai, investigating officer, said both suspects were arrested and a case under Sections 302, 201 and 34 of the IPC has been registered against c m y b them. The duo had confessed to the crime. They were produced in a court and brought on two-day police remand for further probe, he added. In his complaint, Resham Singh said Baldev married Sonu Kaur around 14 years ago. He said the couple had three children from the marriage. He alleged that Baldev Singh was a driver, who used to remain mostly on tour. He alleged she developed illicit relations with Arshdeep Singh who used to often come to his house in his absence. The family members used to object to this and therefore she used to often quarrel with them. They did not have cordial relations with her. He said three days ago, his brother Baldev returned to the house from a tour and was sleeping in the night. He said during this Arshdeep allegedly entered the house by jumping the wall. He said they heard some noise coming from the house but they did not take notice of it at that time. Next morning, they found Sonu Kaur crying and they rushed to the house and found Baldev Singh’s body lying on the bed. He said when they saw the body, they got suspicious that it appeared to be a murder rather than natural death. There were strangulation marks around his neck. He clicked the pictures of the strangulation marks. He said when they asked her about this, she started creating a scene and did not give satisfactory answers claiming that he died a natural death. He said she later cremated his body despite stiff opposition from other family members. The family members lodged a complaint with the police in this connection. Kuldeep Rai said after the accused were arrested they confessed that they had killed him. When Arshdeep had entered the house and found Baldev Singh there, they entered into a scuffle when the former tried to flee. They fell in nearby fields but Arshdeep strangled him with a rope. Tribune News Service Amritsar, March 13 Addressing the demand of teachers in Punjab, the Education Department has issued a notification inviting applications online for the transfer of teaching, nonteaching and computer faculty in government schools. Generally, the transfer process is carried out in the months of May-June, when schools are in mid-session. But this time, the transfer process will be completed before the commencement of the new academic session. The move is aimed at countering the problem of staff shortage and also easing the process of transfer for teaching and non-teaching staff. According to the letter issued by the department, eli- gible teachers who wish to be transferred can apply online from March 12 to March 19, 2024. Similarly, eligible nonteaching and computer faculty applicants have been asked to apply online on the epunjabschool portal, after updating their general details, service record etc by the said dates. According to the amended policy, the transfers will be made only once a year and the policy would be applicable to all teaching cadre posts. Last year, the Education Department had to face criticism from the teaching cadre due to mid-session transfer of teachers to Schools of Eminence, after teachers protested the decision calling it a ‘violation of its own policy’.
