TRIBUNE PHOTO Tribune News Service Amritsar, March 16 A special court here has acquitted four persons who were arrested by the Amritsar Rural Police four years ago with 1-kg heroin and ~23 lakh of drug money. In the judgment pronounced on March 11, the court pointed out that the prosecution failed to bring on record sufficient, cogent and convincing evidence to prove the guilt of the accused — Simranjit Singh, alias Simar, of Sahowal village (Ajnala), Sarabjit Singh of Fattewal village (Ajnala), Surijit Masih of Gurala village (Ajnala) and Ranjit Singh of Modhe village (Attari). Therefore extending the benefit of doubt, they were acquitted of charges framed against them. While giving details, Namit Singh Mehta, learned coun- MC proposes budget of ~456.61 cr for 2024-25 Charanjit Singh Teja Tribune News Service Amritsar, March 16 The Amritsar Municipal Corporation has proposed a budget of ~456.61 crore for the year 2024-25 and sent it to the Local Bodies Department of the Punjab Government for approval here on Saturday. In the budget, the MC has proposed to increase revenue targets and funds for development. The MC had approved a budget of ~452 crore for the year 2023-24. Almost 66 per cent budget is for the personnel, 30 per cent budget is for development and 4 per cent for any contingency or emergency use. The civic body has increased the target of each department’s estimated income in the budget for 2024-25. In the absence of the MC’s elected General House, the MC Commissioner has been appointed as administration sel for Simaranjit Singh, said Simranjit, Sarabjit Singh and Surjit Masih were arrested by the Ajnala police on August 19, 2019. He said the police had claimed to have confiscated 298-gm, 405-gm and 302 gm of the contraband, respectively, from them. It also seized alleged drug money of ~23 lakh from their car, a licensed pistol with live bullets and ammunition of different calibre at that time. During interrogation, the police had later arrested Ranjit Singh. Mehta said during the trial, it was found that the Indian currency seized was not a drug money in fact it was earnest money of the land belonged to Simaranjit Singh. Now the budget has been sent by the MC Commissioner to the Local Bodies Department for approval under Sections 87(1) and 86(2) of the Municipal Corporation Act, 1976. MC Commissioner Harpreet Singh has been holding meetings with all departments of the MC for the last few days and collected details about the income and expenditure. The office of Deputy Controller, Finance and Accounts (DCFA) of the MC, prepared the budget and sent it to the agenda branch. After detailed discussions of MC officials, the proposed budget has been sent to the government for approval. The property tax wing has to collect ~50 crore as property tax from property owners and current property tax of ~17 crore from water supply and sewerage, ~14 crore from the advertisement department, ~80.25 crore from the MTP department and building fees, development charges ~10.50 crore from sale of property, ~4.20 crore in continued on page 2
