There was panic in the area after the body was found. Sanitation workers of the Municipal Corporation were cleaning the drain with the help of a JCB machine when the body got stuck in its claws. With the help of divers, the MC officials pulled out the body from the drain. The body was not fully decomposed which shows that the victim would have been lying dead in the drain for the past one or two days only. Autopsy will reveal cause of victim’s death, say police After getting information, officials from Police Division 8 reached the scene and started investigation. The body would be kept in a mortuary for 72 hours for identification. Local residents were also being questioned to get any clue about the identification of the deceased. The police also procured record of missing women from various police stations. CCTV cameras in the area and nearby spots were also being checked by the police. The police said after the post-mortem examination, it would be revealed whether the woman died by suicide or she was murdered. Following the announcement of the general elections to the 18th Lok Sabha on March 16, which had brought into force the model code of conduct, arms licence holders had been asked to deposit their firearms with the local police forthwith. Commissioner of Police (CP) Kuldeep Singh Chahal told The Tribune here on Thursday that as many as 16,293 arms licenses had been registered with the Police Commissionerate here and these licence holders were possessing 19,447 licensed weapons of different types. “So far, 5,702 licensed weapons had been deposited with the local police, which constitute 29.32 per cent, of the total 19,447 firearms possessed by the registered 16,293 arms license holders in the commissionerate limits,” Chahal disclosed while stating that the police had been reaching out to the license holders to deposit their licensed weapons with the nearest police station/post without any further delay. Sakshi clarified that any person wanting to seek exemption due to compelling reasons should apply to the screening committee for review of the decision with grounds for seeking the exemption. “Any such representation will be decided by the screening committee immediately, preferably within 24 hours,” she assured while asserting that the non-compliance of the prohibitory order will lead to prosecution under relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code and other relevant laws. Similarly, 28 vulnerable polling stations and seven critical polling stations have been identified under the Khanna police district, with 21 per cent of the area within the limits of Khanna, Payal and Samrala considered as expenditure-sensitive. Ilegal colonies: GLADA got 12 FIRs filed against builders Tribune News Service Ludhiana, March 21 The Greater Ludhiana Area Development Authority (GLADA) yesterday got registered as many as 12 FIRs against colonisers for building illegal colonies in the industrial hub. The cases were registered under Section 36 of the Punjab Apartment and Property Regulation Act, 1995. The Dehlon police registered two such FIRs against the owner of Sharav Infrastructure Private Limited for building an illegal colony, Maharaj Aggarsen Enclave, at Khanpur village and they also sold plots to buyers. Another FIR was lodged against Sanjiv Kumar, who built an illegal colony, Ridhi Enclave, at Jassar village. The Sadar police also registered two FIRs against two unidentified colonisers after finding two illegal colonies at Mehmudpura and Sangowal, respectively. The Dugri police registered one FIR against RC Coloniser of Phase 2, Urban Estate, for building a residential colony, International Heights. The Sahnewal police registered two FIRs against two unidentified colonisers for building illegal colonies at Jaspal Bangar and Sahnewal, respectively. The Jamalpur police registered three cases against colonisers for building illegal colonies in Bhamian Kalan. In the first case, two colonisers, Raj Kumar and Ravinder Singh, of Moti Nagar were booked for developing an illegal residential colony in the industrial area. Another case was registered by the Jamalpur police against Varinder Kumar, Anmol Sharma and Ravinder Singh of the Samrala road area for building an illegal colony, Aone City, in the Industrial Area, which was against the norms. An FIR was registered by the Jamalpur police against Varinder Kumar of Sector 32, Samrala road, for building illegal colony in the Industrial Area. Meanwhile, the Koom Kalan police also registered a case against a coloniser, Inderpreet Singh, of Jamalpur for developing an illegal colony, Guru Nanak Nagar, as the developer had failed to obtain any licence from GLADA. The Meharban police also registered a case against Nachatar Singh of Atal Nagar for building a colony, Khalsa Enclave, at Gonsgarh village. Ludhiana, March 21 The Ludhiana police on Wednesday night arrested a gangster, Movish Bains. While trying to flee, the suspect suffered fractures on his both legs. After some time, he was taken to the Civil Hospital for treatment. About two weeks ago, the gangster, with his accomplices, had opened fire on members of his rival gang at Vijay Nagar. Later, he and members of his gang vandalised a Maruti Baleno car of their rival Mukul gang. The CIA team, led by inspector Beant Juneja, said after getting a tip-off about the location of the suspect, the police team conducted raids and arrested him from the Jandiali stadium. While the police were chasing him, he jumped from the rooftop of the stadium, having a height of 14 feet. Sources said about a year ago, the CIA team had arrested gangster Movish Bains from Qila Mohalla. The police had then recovered a .32 bore pistol and two cartridges from him. Bains was accused of taking away a Toyota Fortuner vehicle from Jaganjot Singh at gunpoint at Grover Service Station, Pakhowal Road, here. Then, along with Movish Bains, his accomplice gangster Newton was also booked in the case. In January 2024 only, he came out on bail from jail. Movish has been facing nine cases, of which the majority are of attempt to murder and the Arms Act. Over two years ago, Movish had also attacked a local scribe by barging into his house at Salem Tabri. Sources said the CIA during the questioning of the gangster, got major leads about other notorious gangsters with whom Movish was in touch and in days to come, the police might make recoveries of illegal weapons and arrest other criminals. The police have also given orders to deposit licensed weapons, however, the late night alleged firing incident reported outside the Circuit House on the Ferozepur road here on Wednesday caused panic among residents. It is learnt that there was an argument between two groups after a minor collision between two cars following which a person from one of the groups opened fire. Later, passers-by informed the police. Chairing a meeting with printers and publishers, Sawhney, accompanied by LS POLL Additional Deputy Commissioner (G) Major Amit Sareen, said all pamphlets, posters, handbills, etc. must carry the name of the publisher and printer besides the number of printed copies and a declaration of the publisher must be submitted with all information regarding the publication. She said if any person violates the guidelines, they would be punished as per law. He was facing accusation of embezzling Rs 97,40,979 while supplying/selling books during his posting at the Regional Office here. The court has c m y b ordered him to undergo fiveyear rigorous imprisonment (RI) with a fine of Rs 20,000. A case was registered against the accused on the complaint of Gurinder Pal Singh, the then Secretary, Punjab School Education Board (PSEB), Sahibzada Singh Nagar (Mohali). The complainant had stated that the board developed different regional offices in Punjab, wherein district managers used to collect examination forms and examination fees from stu- dents, besides supplying books related to the Block and Welfare Department/Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan in the district concerned and selling books at regional offices. The head office situated at SAS Nagar, Mohali, used to conduct audit of the supplied/sold books by sending different audit teams to regional offices and if any discrepancy comes to the light, appropriate action was taken as per rules. The teams were sent to the Regional Office, Ludhiana, and from audits conducted by them from time to time as well as from reports produced, a total loss of Rs 97,40,979 was found in the sale and supply of books during the period, from April 1, 2009, to August 31, 2012. Besides, bills amounting to Rs 16,00,000 for the books supplied to the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan through the Regional Office during academic year 2011-2012 and for books supplied to the Welfare Department and the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan during 2010-2011 were sent to Anil Kumar Sharma, district manager, Regional Office, Ludhiana, on various occasions but he did not apprise the head office of the same. Hence, a departmental inquiry was initiated against him and store keeper Ravinder Sharma and both were found guilty, the complainant added. During the trial, the suspect pleaded innocene but after appreciating the evidence of the prosecution, the court found him guilty. The case against co-accused Ravinder is yet to be decided.
