The incident occurred on March 25 and the victim, Naginder, succumbed to his injuries at the PGI in Chandigarh on Thursday. The stone was thrown with such a force that the victim suffered serious injuries on the skull. The complainant, Surinder, of Kartar Nagar told the police that on March 25, he along with his brother Naginder went to Deepak’s house for Holi celebrations. While they were consuming alcohol, Deepak started heated arguments with them. Later, he and Naginder came outside Deepak’s house. Meanwhile, the suspect went to the third floor of the building and threw a stone with force at them, which hit Naginder’s head. He suffered critical injuries on the skull. While undergoing treatment at the PGI, he succumbed to the injuries. ASI Harcharan Singh said earlier, an attempt-to-murder case was registered against the suspect and now, murder charge was added to the case. He was yet to be arrested. Ludhiana, March 28 With the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, cricket bookies operating from the industrial hub have started making huge money while naive victims wanting to become rich by placing bets have been losing their hard-earned money. Though cricket betting is not new to the city, no major network has been busted by the police so far. Several cricket bookies operating from the city for years have made a fortune and also gathered benami properties. The properties have usually been registered in the names of their relatives or closed ones to befool lawenforcing agencies. Commissioner of Police (CP) Kuldeep Singh Chahal while talking to The Tribune here on Thursday said recently, the CIA wing of the Police Commissionerate, Ludhiana, arrested Rahul Goyal of SBS Nagar for accepting bets on matches of the ongoing IPL while two persons managed to escape. A laptop, five mobile phones and ?5,000 in cash were also seized from the suspect. “I have given clear instructions to police personnel to take strict action if they get any information about book- Take strict action against punters found operating from city, CP tells cops ies operating from Ludhiana. Since the IPL season is going on, police officials have been told to activate their sources to get information about the network of bookies and bust the same. When asked if the police can attach properties of cricket bookies if the same are found to be made from proceeds of illegal trade of cricket betting, Chahal categorically said: “When the police arrest any cricket bookie and during investigation if they find that the suspect has gathered properties, including benami, with the proceeds of betting, the police can start the procedure of attachment of the properties.” Meanwhile, ADCP (Crime) Amandeep Singh Brar said strict instructions were already given to crime wings to ensure that no illegal activity, including cricket betting, takes place in the city. Later, he was arrested by the police. He has been identified as Pritam Singh (26) of Kalal Majra, Fatehgarh Sahib. The man used to provide fitness coaching to her for recruitment in the Army and the Police Department. The complainant (21), a resident of Khanna, told the police that she was taking coaching from the suspect, who claims to be a ex-serviceman. On March 22, he called her and told to accompany him to Khanna for some work. After reaching Khanna, he took her to a room in Bhattian village. As they entered the room, the suspect started sexually harassing her. As she raised the alarm and protested his move, he left the scene. The police also arrested the suspect, Munna. Asma got married five years ago and gave birth to two children. Sources said her husband was suspecting that she was having an illicit relationship and due to the same, he killed her. After committing the crime, he fled the scene. Three notices were issued to AAP and two each were served on the Congress and the BJP on Thursday by assistant returning officers (AROs). As per details, Assistant Returning Officer, Ludhiana East-cum Joint MC Commissioner Chetan Bunger issued two notices to AAP while one notice each to the Congress and the BJP Bunger said var. In the district, approximately 9,500 applications were received. Party workers are in a fury after Bittu joined the BJP and now, they have only one mission, to get him defeated. “A few days ago, Bittu was speaking against the BJP and in no time, he joined the same party. Another senior party worker from the party said the name of Bharat Bhushan Ashu was making rounds after Bittu’s exit from the party. “The decision of Ravneet Bittu came as a shock to the party but it has in a way united Congress workers all the more. Now, everybody is energetic and has got a mission not to let him win the elections as he has deserted the party and it was least expected from him. It was due to the the Congress that he had won the elections thrice,” he said. Speaking on the current situation, Ashu said the entire episode had proven that Bittu was a weak leader. The true leader was the one who withstands every situation and never leaves his party. Only such leaders come out victorious. “The party’s wish is my command and whatever is the decision taken by the party high command, I will be happy. If I am told to contest or somebody else is given the ticket, I will be happy with the decision,” he said. 14-year-old girl dies by suicide Ludhiana, March 28 A 14-year-old girl died by suicide by hanging herself at her residence in Basti Jodhewal on Thursday. She has been identified as Nazia Khatun. As per investigating officer Kuldeep Singh, Nazia was studying in Class VIII. On March 26, she was using a mobile when her mother entered her room. She warned her not to use the same and also snatched the phone from her. Later, when her mother came to the room, she was shocked to see the hanging body of the girl. A neighbour rushed the girl to a hospital from where she was referred to the PGI, Chandigarh. She died on the way to the PGI. The police initiated inquest proceedings in the case. — TNS
