Investigating officer (IO) Parwinder Singh said the suspect had been identified as Manpreet Singh, a resident of Kotla Suraj Mall. Jang Sher Singh, a resident of Dhando Wal village, told the police that the suspect, who was driving his vehicle negligently, hit him on the evening of March 25. He suffered injuries in the mishap. A case under Sections 279, 337, 338 and 427 of the IPC has been registered against the suspect. OC MAN BOOKED ON ASSAULT CHARGE Phagwara: The Nurmahal police have booked a person on the charge of assaulting two women. Investigating officer (IO) Jagjit Singh said the suspect had been identified as Gurmail Singh, a resident of Kot Badal Khan village. Ramanjit Kaur, a resident of the same village, told the police that the suspect assaulted her and her sisterin-law on April 4. The suspect also threatened the women. A case under Sections 323, 324 and 506 of the IPC has been registered. TRIBUNE PHOTOS Police conduct mock drill to check poll readiness in city Tribune News Service Jalandhar, April 8 In order to check the preparedness for the ensuing general elections, the Jalandhar Police Commissionerate conducted a mock drill here today. Divulging details, Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma said the aim of the exercise was to assess the readiness of the police force for the upcoming elections. For it, a plot was designed to check effectiveness of the force and messages were conveyed through the District Control Room, Jalandhar. Around 12:30 PM, the news of a bag snatching was circulated through the Police Control Room. CP Sharma said ADCP II Aditya was supervising the exercise. Key areas of the city such as Jyoti Chowk, Workshop Chowk, Gulab Devi Road, Nakodar Chowk, Football Chowk, and Kapurthala Chowk were put on red alert after the message. He said specific officers, including ACPs Barjinder Singh and Nirmal Singh, were assigned to oversee designated points such as Kapurthala Chowk and Jyoti Chowk, respectively. The CP said the two-hour operation involved thorough checking of vehicles and issuing challans to violators. He reiterated the commitment of the Police Commissionerate to ensure free, fair and peaceful polls in the city. 25,500 kg lahan seized Phagwara: The Satnampura police arrested a drug peddler and recovered 220 intoxicant tablets from his possession on Sunday night. SHO Gaurav Dhir said the suspect, identified as Shivam, a resident of Lamian Mohalla, Phagwara, was nabbed at a checkpoint near Law Gate, Miherru. A case under the NDPS Act has been registered against the suspect. OC LIQUOR TRADER IN POLICE NET Phagwara: The police arrested a liquor trader and recovered 12 bottles of illicit liquor from his possession on Sunday night. The suspect has been identified as Balwinder Singh, a resident of Rihana Jattan village near Phagwara. A case under the Punjab Excise Act has been registered. OC 29 booked for encroaching on Admn increases vigil in view of LS poll land in Phagwara Tribune News Service Jalandhar, April 8 A joint team of excise and police officials today seized 25,500 kg of lahan in the Mand area falling under the Kabirpur police station of the Sultanpur Lodhi subdivision. The team, led by Excise Inspector Gopal Gera and police officials, carried out a search in the Inderpur Mand area. During the checking, they found lahan, 13 tarpaulins and three iron drums being used to make illicit liquor. Officials destroyed lahan on the spot. Deputy Commissionercum-District Election Officer Amit Kumar Panchal said the teams had already enhanced vigil in view of the Lok Sabha elections. Excise and police officials as well as flying squads were keeping a close eye on illegal and suspicious activities so as to ensure free, fair and smooth conduct of polls. The Deputy Commissioner also mentioned that search should be increased across the district, especially in Mand area, so as to contain such practices. The district administration has adopted a zero tolerance policy against illegal supply of liquor and making of lahan as teams are carrying out checking at liquor vends with L-17 licence, etc. The police and excise officials had seized 23 litres of illicit liquor and 3,200 kg of lahan a few days ago, which was destroyed on the spot. Our Correspondent Phagwara, April 8 The Mehat Pur police have booked 29 persons, including 12 women, for encroaching upon a land. Investigating officer (IO) Jaspal Singh said 27 suspects are residents of Burte Dian Chhana village, while two are from Bhode village falling under the Bilga police station. In his complaint to the police, Balwant Singh, a resident of Bute Dian Chhana village, said the suspects encroached on his land. They also assaulted him and threatened him. The IO said a case under Sections 447, 323, 506, 511, 148 and 149 of the IPC had been registered against the suspects. Four snatchers land in police dragnet 22 mobiles, bikes, smart watches recovered from their possession, probe on Tribune News Service Jalandhar, April 8 The police have arrested four snatchers and recovered 22 mobile phones from their possession. Divulging details, police officials said they got a tip-off that Jatin, alias Jattu, and Kamaljit Singh, alias Kamal, who were habitual offenders, were involved in theft of motorcycles and mobile phones and several cases were pending against them. Subsequently, they laid a trap at Dhilwan Chowk where the duo was planning to sell a stolen motorcycle. Further investigations led to the recovery of one more motorcycle, 12 mobile phones and two smart watches from them. Police officials said a case under Sections 379 and 34 of the IPC had been registered against the suspects at the Rama Mandi police station. They said a person, Gurdev Singh, complained that two persons, including a woman, snatched his mobile phone on the pretext of asking a location on April 4. Following which, a case under Sections 379B and 34 of the IPC was registered at the Division No. 2 police station. During investigation, it came to fore that the suspects used a motorcycle, bearing registration number PB08BS-1949, to commit the crime. “Thorough investigation led to the arrest of Sagar, alias Sam, and Nisha, alias Shalu. The police recovered 10 stolen mobile phones from their possession,” police officials said. They said a case each was already pending against Sagar and Nisha. Further investigations are on in the case. c m y b Jalandhar, April 8 As former Chief Minister Charanjit S Channi has started intensifying his activities in Jalandhar with each passing day ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, Phillaur MLA Vikramjit S Chaudhary, who has been seeking ticket for himself or his family member, has started using pressure tactics on the party. His first salvo was by quitting as the Chief Whip of the Congress in the Vidhan Sabha. Chaudhary has reportedly submitted the resignation to Leader of Opposition Partap S Bajwa. As soon as the news spread, Vikramjit chose to go incommunicado not taking any calls or replying to any messages of the media. His move also fuelled speculation that he could switch to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) as it is yet to announce ticket from Jalandhar. AAP leaders shared that the party had been conducting surveys for all possible inside and outside candidates and would attempt to field the best available candidate. After there have been reports that Local Bodies Minister Balkar Singh was unlikely to be fielded, the names of Darshan S Talhi, former DCC (rural) chief who had joined AAP two years ago, and Chandan Grewal (both from the Valmiki community) had been doing rounds. Former Akali CPS Pawan Tinu is also learnt to be on AAP’s radar. AAP has called a meeting of all Jalandhar MLAs in Chandigarh tomorrow. Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann and senior leaders Sanjay Singh and Sandeep Pathak will be taking the meeting. A discussion on Jalandhar candidate is expected to be the main agenda. Kapurthala DC, SDM inspect complaint cell meeting of seven Lok Sabha constituencies being held by AAP at Konica Resorts, Phagwara, and addressed by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Saturday. Election Commission officials said no one had the authority to display political banners regarding the Lok Sabha elections on the government property without permission. The banners were removed by the election staff. No permission was taken for putting up banners on the overbridge, said Harinder Kaur Sethi, adding that expenditure on these banners had been included in the election expenses of the political party. Meanwhile, Kapurthala Deputy Commissioner Amit Kumar Panchal, along with Assistant Returning Officercum-Phagwara SDM Jashanjeet Singh, inspected the complaint cell of the Election Commission late on Saturday evening. The liquor, being ferried in a canter, was apprehended by the Jalandhar rural police and the driver was arrested. Dr Ankur Gupta, Senior Superintendent of Police, while addressing the media in Jalandhar, said that on April 6, a police team present near Jandu Singha spotted a canter coming from the other side. The canter (PB08-CH8247) was being driven by Balwinder Singh, a resident of Kot Jograj in Gurdaspur, presently residing at Nurpur in Maqsudan. The vehicle was stopped at the naka and the accused Balwinder was apprehended by the police team. Upon a search, the vehicle was found to have 983 cartons of liquor which was to be used during the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Brands and makes of liquor stored in the vehicle included Punjab Rano, Kingfisher beer, Punjab King, Punjab Rasbhari, Punjab Rum, Vodka, Dabang, Mota Santra etc. A case under Sections 61, 1 and 14 of the Excise Act was registered against the accused at the Adampur police station in Jalandhar. The police said further investigation was on in the case. Hoshiarpur, April 8 The Garhdiwala police arrested a person for not renewing his licence for almost three years. The police also seized a revolver and six live cartridges from him. Inspector Hardevpreet Singh, in-charge of the Garhdiwala police station, said a patrolling party led by ASI Satpal Singh was investigating the suspects. Navjot Kaur, a resident of Jaja Khurd, met the police at the bus stop in Garhdiwala and informed that her maternal uncle’s son Maninderpal Singh, alias Sabi, a resident of ward number 5, Kasba Mohalla, was roaming around in the Dasuya area. There was a licensed revolver in his name, but he had not renewed its licence for almost three years. He had verbally informed that his licence had expired in 2021. After confirming the report, the police arrested Maninderpal and seized his revolver. — OC Drug smuggling racket busted, 2 arrested Tribune News Service 180 grams of heroin recovered from them Jalandhar, April 8 The city police claimed to have busted a racket involved in smuggling of heroin and arrested two persons. The police also recovered 180 grams of heroin from them. Those arrested have been identified as Kamaljit and Jatinder Kumar, both resi- dents of Jalandhar. Divulging details, police officials said acting on a tipoff, the CIA staff carried out a patrolling from the Rama Mandi chowk to the Service Road, Dakoha railway crossing. On suspicion, the police party stopped Kamaljit. During search, they recovered 30 grams of heroin from him. During Kamaljit’s interrogation, involvement of Jatinder Kumar also came to fore. Following which, he was also arrested. Officials claimed that during further investigation, the recovered 150 grams of heroin from them. They said the police were further investi- gating the source of drugs. A case under Sections 21, 29 and 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act was registered at the Rama Mandi police station. They said the suspects had a criminal record as cases were already registered against them at Jalandhar and Ludhiana. Further investigations were on into the matter.
The Tribune, now published from Chandigarh, started publication on February 2, 1881, in Lahore (now in Pakistan). It was started by Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, a public-spirited philanthropist, and is run by a trust comprising four eminent persons as trustees.

The English edition apart, the 133-year-old Tribune has two sister publications, Punjabi Tribune (in Punjabi) and Dainik Tribune (in Hindi).
