BJP’s Nimisha takes up issue with Minister Gadkari Nawanshahr SSP likely to face inquiry Tension after J-K pupils intimidated in Phagwara On their request, LPU permits them to return to their homes in Kashmir Ashok Kaura Deepkamal Kaur Tribune News Service Nawanshahr, April 28 BJP leader Nimisha Mehta has submitted a complaint against the SSP Nawanshahr, to Union , Minister of Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari for illegally occupying land of the NHAI and constructing a police post at Mehli village. Mehta said public looks up to the Punjab Police for safeguarding their properties against encroachers but the Nawanshahr police have illegally occupied land owned by the NHAI and also dared to construct a police post on this land by using funds from the state exchequer. Questioning the SSP Mehta , said he must answer how being an IPS officer, he could get an illegal building constructed on the land owned by the Centre and how he could get the funds released for this illegal construction. She urged the DGP to take notice of the matter and suspend the SSP immediately for putting the department to shame. BJP leader Nimisha Mehta shows the police post at Mehli built on a portion of the NHAI land. She said usually it’s the junior police officers who are made the scapegoat in such cases but since the SSP is the chief of district police, then he must be made to bear the brunt also for promoting its force to carry out illegal acts. The Mehli police post falls under Behram police station. It was earlier situated at Mehli village and now this post had been constructed right on the highway. Being a place of public dealing, there will surely be people coming in two-wheelers and fourwheelers which would amount to traffic chaos and hence invite accidents on the highway. Mehta said the minister had assured her of inquiry and legal action. SP headquarters, Nawan, shahr, Iqbal Singh said, “There is no encroachment done by the police. Still the records will be checked tomorrow again to ascertain the facts”. Phagwara, April 28 A tense situation unfolded at Green Valley near Law Gate in Phagwara on the intervening night of April 27 and 28 after a group of 20-30 individuals reportedly attempted to intimidate Kashmiri students residing in nearby paying guest accommodations. The group, allegedly armed with lathis, was seen knocking at the gates of PG houses where Kashmiri students were staying, allegedly shouting provocative slogans and foul language. The incident is said to have been triggered by anger over the recent Pahalgam attack in Kashmir. According to witnesses and police sources, the group, comprising both male and female students, gathered near the residences in a show of protest. Police personnel from Chaheru police chowki responded promptly after receiving information about the disturbance. They reached the spot and dispersed the crowd before any c m y b physical clashes could occur. No injuries or property damage were reported in the incident. Speaking to the media, some Kashmiri students alleged that the miscreants were students from a private university hailing from Bihar and UP . They claimed that the group specifically targeted the PGs housing Kashmiri students and used derogatory language aimed at them. However, the students confirmed that they remained inside their accommodations and avoided any direct confrontation. A delegation of Kashmiri students met the university authorities today and expressed fear for their safety and requested permission to return to their homes in J-K. The university administration announced that any student wishing to leave would be permitted to do so. The university offered flexibility regarding the examinations, initially scheduled to begin on May 6. The university has allowed affected students to appear for these examinations in July instead.
