As voting process was on, all five main candidates from Jalandhar — Charanjit Channi from the Congress, Pawan Tinu from the AAP Sushil , Rinku from the BJP MS , Kaypee from the SAD and Balwinder Kumar from the BSP — went around the district to check arrangements at polling stations and boost the morale of workers. Unlike previous years, no technical glitch in any of the EVMs used in 1,951 polling booths was reported today. Incidents of minor clashes were reported from Adampur, Goraya and Jalandhar West, but the polling process was smooth. An FIR was lodged in the Adampur incident against four persons who attacked Tajinder, Congress worker and son of former sarpanch at Mansurpur Badala village. An FIR against unidentified persons was also lodged at the Basti Bawa Khel police station in yesterday’s incident wherein ladies suits were gifted to devotees at Panchwati Temple in Basti Guzan. BJP candidate Sushil Rinku’s wife Sunita Rinku was seen at the venue, but she denied any role in gifting. SHO Harparkash S Cheema said the FIR had been lodged against unidentified persons on the basis of the viral video. The deceased has been identified as Uttam Chand, a resident of Himachal Pradesh and presently residing in Ludhiana. The police arrested the canter driver, identified as Rohit Kumar, a resident of Firozepur, and impounded the vehicle. The police have registered a case under Sections 304A, 279 and 427 of the IPC. They handed over the body to the family members after postmortem examination. OC ELDERLY GET INKED 57.5% TURNOUT Several elderly voters turned up to cast vote for the Lok Sabha elections on Saturday. Taro Devi, an 83-year-old woman from Basti Sheikh, came to cast with her son. Several elderly persons aged above 90 years also came on wheelchairs. The poll percentage for the Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat was recorded at 57.5. There were a total of 16,54,005 voters in Jalandhar. Of this, 9,51,627 voters exercised their franchise. The ECI, however, may release updated figures by Sunday morning. There were nine model booths in the Phillaur assembly constituency, 17 in Shahkot, 10 each in Nakodar, Kartarpur, Jalandhar West, Jalandhar Central, Jalandhar North, and Jalandhar Cantonment and 11 in Adampur. Among these, one booth in each constituency was designated as all-women booth, while a booth at a government school on Gulab Devi Road catered to people with disabilities (PwDs). A youththemed booth was set up at a college on the Ladowali Road and a green-themed booth was established at Bhattian village, Phillaur. Polling staff emphasised that the initiative highlighted the importance of voting and the Girls stand in a queue at a pink booth at HMV College in Jalandhar. At pink booths in MGN Public School in Adarsh Nagar and Government Girls Senior Secondary Smart School in Nakodar, voters were greeted with rangolis and inspiring paintings motivating them to vote. Selfie points were also set up to add to the festive atmosphere. These model booths featured improved queue management, volunteer assistance, and priority voting for PwD, senior citizens and pregnant and lactating mothers.
