A minor quarrel was cited to be the reason behind murder. The deceased, identified as Roop Lal, was admitted to the Phillaur Civil Hospital. He died during treatment at the hospital. The police registered a case against the three suspects, identified as Sucha Ram, Kamaljit and Jaswinder Pal, all residents of Chhokran village. The police handed over the body of the deceased to his family members after post-mortem examination. The suspects are on the run and raids are on to nab them. OC TWO ARRESTED WITH 4.16 KG POPPY HUSK Phagwara: The Shahkot police have arrested two persons on the charge of selling poppy husk. Investigating officer (IO) Sulindar Singh said 4.16 kg of poppy husk was recovered from the possession of the suspects, identified as Jaswant Singh, alias Satta, a resident of Mohalla Kasba in Mehatpur, and his brother Dalbir Singh, alias Kalu. The IO said a case under Sections 15-B, 21, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act was registered against the suspects. The motorcycle on which the suspects were travelling with the contraband was impounded by the police. OC EIGHT BOOKED ON CHARGE OF ASSAULT Phagwara: The Nakodar Sadar police have booked eight persons on the charge of assaulting a villager. Investigating officer (IO) Jiwan Singh said the suspects, were identified as Satnam Singh, Gurpreet Singh, Amandeep and Harpreet Singh, all residents of Sahem village, and their four unidentified accomplices. Harpreet, a resident of Sahem same village, complained to the police that the suspects waylaid and attacked him with weapons and seriously injured him. The IO said a case under Sections 115(2), 118(2), 191(3) and 190 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita was registered against the suspects. In another case, the Mehatpur police booked nine persons, including two women of Bute Dian Chhana village, for assaulting Jaspal Singh, a resident of Bhode village, falling under the Bilga police station, said IO Jaswinder Singh. OC BIKE PARKED OUTSIDE HOUSE STOLEN Phagwara: A motorcycle parked outside house was stolen on Friday evening. Bike owner Sumit Kumar told the police that he parked his twowheeler outside his house in Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar on Friday evening. The complainant said a few hours later, when he came out of the house he found his bike missing. On the basis of the complaint lodged by Sumit Kumar, the police registered a case in this connection. OC ONE BOOKED FOR ILLEGAL MINING Phagwara: The Nakodar Sadar police have booked a villager for illegal mining. Investigating officer (IO) Harjit Singh said the suspect, was identified as Sukhjit Singh, a resident of Chak Vendal village. Mining officer Ajay Kumar complained to the police that the suspect was excavating more earth than permitted near his village. The IO said a case was registered against suspect. Aparna Banerji Tribune News Service Jalandhar, August 3 Back to back cases of two elderly women being abused by their kin within one week has once again focused the spotlight on the mistreatment being meted out to the aged and infirm by their relatives and children. On Tuesday, a video of a young woman, beating up an elderly woman, went viral. The 95-year-old Phillaur resident was beaten by her daughter-in-law. In the video, a younger woman with her back to camera was seen landing blows on the elderly woman, who lay on the floor. Later, she gave the elderly woman a stick, which the elderly woman tried to hurl back at her. After the video went viral, the elderly woman was admitted to the Phillaur Civil Hospital owing to her injuries. She was later discharged and had to go back to the same home. ASI Surinder Kumar of the Phillaur police station said proceedings had been initiated against the daughter-inlaw under Section 115 of the BNS. While the CP, wasn’t present, Manvi Mahendru from PLANE took up the issue with an official at his office on Friday. CP Swapan Sharma said, “I’m not aware of the complaint, but Tarsem Kapoor, Chairman, Apahaj Ashram, Jalandhar, said, “The number of elderly patients, who are reporting to us, have risen dramatically compared to a decade ago. We have 160 inmates, of whom, barring a couple, all are abandoned elderly. Five patients from the Red Cross Old Age Home at the rear of the civil hospital were also shifted to our ashram six months ago. One of them was brought with a pelvic fracture which we treated, another had died.” He said, “Four more wards are under construction at the ashram to accommodate more inmates. Children abandon their parents after usurping their properties. In many cases, no one even turns up to conduct their last rites.” Three arrested for murder Hoshiarpur, August 3 The police claims to have solved a murder case at Khairar Rawal village with the arrest of three youths of the same village. One person was murdered with an intention of committing theft at his house in the village. The police recovered Rs 2,500 from the suspects which they stole from the victim’s house. During a press conference at the Police Lines here today, SSP Surendra Lamba said on August 2, the body of Harmesh Lal, a resident of Khairar Rawal village, was found in his house. On the complaint of Jaswinder Kaur, the wife of the deceased, the Mahilpur police registered a case in this connection. A team headed by SP (D) Sarbjit Singh Bahia was formed to investigate the case. Officials of the CIA were also included in the team. The suspects also confessed that they strangulated Harmesh Lal with a piece of cloth, the SSP added. The SSP said on the night of the incident, there was a Jagran in the village. The suspects went to the victim’s house for stealing valuables as they thought villagers would be busy in the Jagran and no one would get any clue of the crime they committed. The SSP said Rs 2,500 stolen from the victim’s house were recovered from the suspects. He said the suspects would be presented in a court and brought on police remand for further probe. — OC Woman dies of snakebite in Handwal Talwara, August 3 A woman has died of snakebite at Handwal village. According to information, Davinder Kaur, wife of nambardar Tirath Ram of Handwal village, went to her fields on Saturday morning to col- lect fodder for milch cattle. While Davinder was cutting fodder in a field, she was bitten by a poisonous snake. When Davinder came to know about the snakebite, she immediately informed her husband Tirath Ram. Tirath Ram immediately arranged a vehicle and took Davinder to the government hospital in Hajipur. Manav Khurana, who owns a cosmetic shop in Rainak Bazaar, was at home when the incident happened. The bullet struck him in the head, necessitating immediate medical attention. He was swiftly transported to a private hospital, where he remains in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The details surrounding the incident are still unclear. The police have suggested that preliminary investigations indicate an accidental discharge of Khurana’s licensed firearm. Jalandhar, August 3 Deputy Commissioner Dr Himanshu Aggarwal on Friday reviewed the work of the Revenue Department and instructed officials to speed up the digitisation of jamabandis. During a meeting with officials of the Revenue Department at the District Administrative Complex here, the DC said the digitisation work of jamabandis should be expedited. He also directed officials to make jamabandis live as soon as possible. Dr Aggarwal asked SubDivisional Magistrates to ensure regular inspections of their respective tehsils and sub-tehsils. He instructed tehsildars and naib tehsildars to conduct inspections at the patwari and kanungo level as per the prescribed calendar and send regular reports. He directed tehsildars and naib Deputy Commissioner Dr Himanshu Aggarwal at a meeting with officials of the Revenue Department in Jalandhar. Earlier, the DC held extensive discussions with the Sub-Divisional Magistrates, tehsildars, and naib tehsildars regarding the revision of collector rates. He said the draft regarding the revision of the collector rates was available in tehsil, SDM offices, and the HRC branch. He said people could visit these offices to view the draft for raising any objections. He said if there were any objections to the draft, these could be submitted at the office concerned. Police launch comprehensive drive to check traffic congestion, bolster security Avneet Kaur Tribune News Service Jalandhar, August 3 In a decisive move to address traffic congestion and bolster security, the city police have unveiled a series of robust measures aimed at ensuring public safety and order. The new initiatives mandate stringent registration and verification processes for autorickshaw drivers, alongside enhanced night-time security operations across the city. Starting in the upcoming weeks, all auto-rickshaws in the city must be registered, and drivers must undergo police verification. “This ini- tiative will see the integration of a sophisticated software system that maintains an upto-date database of all registered three-wheelers and their drivers. Each auto-rickshaw will display a QR code that passengers can scan to verify the driver’s registration and clearance status, enhancing transparency and safety,” said Swapan Sharma, Police Commissioner (CP), Jalandhar. He further said, “In a bid to streamline the traffic flow, designated auto-rickshaw stops will be established in the bustling market areas and other high-traffic zones. During the operation, police teams thoroughly checked banks, ATMs, and other sensitive locations. A total of 26 Zebra (four-wheeler) teams and 13 Romeo (twowheeler) teams were deployed to enhance security. Suspicious individuals were monitored and questioned to maintain a secure environment in the city. “The Jalandhar Commissionerate Police is committed to ensure public safety and has called on residents to cooperate in implementing new measures. Through these intensified efforts, we aim to create a safe and more organised environment in the city for residents,” the CP said.
