According to information, Jarnail Singh, a resident of Jandor village, told the police that travel agent Inderjit Singh of Navi Mumbai in Maharashtra allegedly cheated him of ~21 lakh in the name of sending his son Gursevak Singh abroad. After registering a case, the police have initiated probe. OC ONE BOOKED FOR NEGLIGENCE Phagwara: The Nakodar city police have booked an unidentified bus driver on the charge of causing death by negligence. Hardev Singh, a resident of Mohalla Gahrriyan, Nakodar, complained to the police that he was the owner of a shop on Jalandhar Road. He said on October 19, the driver of bus bearing registration number PB-08-BZ-4151 of the Kartar Bus Company was driving recklessly. He said an elderly woman, who was crossing the road, was crushed under the wheels of the bus. Investigating Officer Dilbag Singh said the police had kept the body at a civil hospital for identification. He said a case was registered against unidentified driver. OC ONE BOOKED FOR BID TO LOOT ATM Phagwara: The Nakodar police have booked unidentified miscreants for an attempt to loot ATM. Rohini Sharma, a resident of Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar, complained to the police that she worked as a manager of a bank branch on Shankar Road. She said unidentified miscreants made an unsuccessful attempt to loot the bank ATM on October 21 and damaged it. She said no guard was deployed at the ATM during night time. Investigating Officer Dilbag Singh said a case under Sections 303 (2) (theft) and 62 (attempt to commit offences punishable with life imprisonment) of the BNS was registered against unidentified suspects. OC WOMAN HELD FOR KIDNAPPING MINOR Phagwara: The Mehatpur police have arrested a woman on the charge of helping her son in kidnapping a minor girl. Investigating officer (IO) Jaswindar Singh said the suspect was identified as Baljit Kaur, a resident of Uggi village, under the Nakodar Sadar police station. She helped her son Harjot Singh to kidnap a minor girl. The IO said a case was registered against the suspect in this connection. Ministerlaunches‘Swachhata Di Lehar’ campaign in city Tribune News Service Jalandhar, October 24 Ahead of Diwali and upcoming municipal corporation polls in the state, Local Bodies Minister Dr Ravjot Singh on Thursday launched “Swachhata Di Lehar” campaign by cleaning streets and lifting garbage in Jalandhar. “Fifteen-day cleanliness drive, running from October 24 to November 7, aims to raise awareness among the public about the importance of maintaining cleanliness as a collective responsibility,” the minister said. Dr Ravjot emphasised that for keeping the city and localities clean, joint efforts of all residents were required. “Just as we maintain cleanliness in our homes, we must also put in concerted efforts to keep our surroundings clean and green,” he said. He called on the people to join hands with the Punjab Government in cleaning their neighbourhoods and making the campaign a success. Dr Ravjot said as a part of the campaign, civic body staff across the state would dedicate an extra hour every day to cleanliness efforts while continuing with their routine work. The minister also urged the public to turn this campaign into a mass movement by participating in large numbers. The minister assured that he would personally oversee the campaign to ensure its success. The police recovered one .32-bore pistol and one .315bore country-made pistol from the possession of the suspects. During interrogation, the suspects revealed that they had procured the weapons from Ranjit Kumar, a migrant, who had been running an inter-state arms supply network. Acting swiftly, the police team apprehended Ranjit Kumar, who later confessed to supplying weapons across Punjab at prices ranging from ~40,000 to ~60,000 per pistol. The police team also recov- ered three .32-bore pistols, including the murder weapon, along with six live rounds. The Splendor motorcycle used in the crime was recovered from one Soravdeep Singh, alias Sorav, who had been concealing evidence since the murder. A case was registered under Sections 103(1), 191(3), 190 and 61(2) of the BNS and Sections 25, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act at the Bhogpur police station. The suspects would be produced in a court, with the police seeking extended remand for further investigation into the arms supply network and potential involvement of more individuals in the murder. Police launch drive against eve-teasing, issue 284 challans Kapurthalamanheld Jalandhar, October 24 In a major crackdown against eve-teasing, the Jalandhar Police, led by Commissioner of Police (CP) Swapan Sharma, has intensified its efforts, issuing 284 challans, impounding 80 vehicles and taking eight preventive actions over the past three months. The police initiative, in line with the mandate from Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav, aims to combat the growing problem of harassment in public space. Commissioner of Police Swapan Sharma said over 150 check-points were set up across the city in these three months to address the issue. These check-points were strategically placed near schools, colleges and other crowded areas where instances of eve-teasing had been reported. The CP urged the public to report incidents using the helpline numbers 112, 1091 and 1098 to ensure immediate police response. “Apart from this, to enhance public safety, the police pres- ence has been ramped up across the city, with CCTV cameras being installed in the key areas. Regular patrols, along with Emergency Response System (ERS) vehicles stationed near schools during the day and in the busy areas at night, is part of the broader action plan,” the CP said, while adding that community programmes were being organised in schools and colleges to raise awareness about gender sensitivity and harassment. Station House Officer (SHO) Baljindar Singh said the suspect was identified as Jaitindar Kumar, alias Ghohli, a resident of Kahlwan village, falling under the Kapurthala Sadar police station. The SHO said the suspect and his accomplices had shot dead Kulwinder Singh, alias Kindi (30), a resident of Kala Sangha village, near Uggi village. Charan Dass, a resident of Kala Sangha village, and father of the deceased, com- plained to the police that his son Kindi was standing near Uggi village with his friend Laddu and two others when the suspects came there and attacked Kindi with sharp weapons. He tried to save himself by running from the spot when one the suspects fired from his pistol at Kindi which led to his death on the spot. Kuldeep Singh of New Kartar Nagar, Shahkot, complained to the police that his wife and two sons were returning home in their car on October 20. He said when they reached Mallarri village gate an unidentified tractor-trailer driver suddenly turned his vehicle without giving any indication. Jalandhar, October 24 The Jalandhar (Rural) police have cracked the sensational Bhogpur murder case with the arrest of three people including its mastermind and his two accomplices. The main suspect was apprehended from the Chandigarh International Airport while attempting to flee to Dubai following an intense monthlong investigation. The arrested suspects have been identified as Arun Kumar, alias Aru (mastermind), resident of Ward No. 6, Guru Nanak Nagar, Bhogpur; Mandeep Kumar, alias Mani, a resident of Guru Nanak Nagar, Bhogpur, and Ranjit Kumar, alias Kaka Baiya, a resident of Navi Abadi, Bhogpur. Divulging details to the media, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Harkamal Preet Singh Khakh said on September 22, Jaspal Singh alias Shalu, was brutally murdered near Moga Gate in Bhogpur. The murder was meticulously planned and executed, with the victim being shot thrice in the head. Protest over GST raids Jalandhar, October 24 A huge drama was witnessed today at Basti Nau when traders along with BJP workers protested against inspections being carried out by the GST Department. Ravinder Dhir, an industrialists, said raids were being conducted to ruin business of traders in the festive season. Earlier too, some traders, under the banner of the Khel Udyog Sangh, had protested to reiterate their demand for ending GST raids. “We are being harassed. The woman, a resident of Bhaini Sahib village of Ludhiana district, visited Nirmal Kutiya, Sultanpur, today with her family to thank Seechewal. The victim woman said she belonged to a poor family and was a mother of two daughters. She went to Hong Kong in 2012 on a tourist visa, but due to her desire to stay there permanently, she continued to work in Hong Kong. While in Hong Kong, she shared a room with another woman who ousted her from the room they shared jointly. The move cost her dearly, due to which she had to suffer mental agony for a long time while gangster continued to threaten her. That woman was locally well connected. Sometime later, a gangster began to threaten my sister. He has scared her so much that even after returning home, she is still in fear.” She said her sister had told her through video call this June that her life was in danger in Hong Kong. Victim’s sister said someone from Bhaini village asked her to contact Balbir Singh Seechewal. After which she contacted him and he immediately shared the matter with the Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian Embassy. Due to Seechewal’s efforts, her sister returned after a few months, she said. The victim woman returned to India on October 15. The victim’s mother, who came with her, said the condition of her daughter in Hong Kong was unbearable for the whole family. She said due to efforts of the Rajya Sabha MP , their daughter returned safely to her family after 12 years. Seechewal said she was a courageous woman who did not give up the hope of returning home even in difficult circumstances. Thanking the Indian Embassy, Seechewal said the Ministry of External Affairs always made a big contribution due to which Indian girls trapped abroad were brought back safely to India. — TNS
