The deceased was identified as Balwinder Kumar of village Pandori near Nakodar. Injured were admitted to the local Civil Hospital. OC ~11 CRORE FOR ROAD REPAIR Phagwara: Roads in Phagwara are being repaired at 53 points with a budget of Rs 11 crore, Municipal Commissioner Navneet Kaur Bal told this correspondent here on Saturday. She said 1,550 points of streetlights had been identified and the MC was providing streetlights at these points by spending Rs 67 lakh. Bal said Rs 3.25 crore was being spent on the work for water supply in different localities, including Onkar Nagar. The redevelopment work on Jalandhar Cantt Railway Station as a world-class railway station was in full swing, he said. The incident occurred around 2 pm when the brakes of the bus failed. There were about 24 devotees in the bus, who were said to be from Samrala and Machhiwara. According to information, the bus of a private academy, driven by Amandeep Singh, was carrying the devotees from Samrala to Charan Chhoh Ganga, Khuralgarh. When the bus was about 100 metres from the destination, it went out of control due to brakes failure. It collided with a hillock, causing injuries to the passengers (mostly children and women). The injured were immediately taken to hospitals by ambulances with help of Gurdwara president Baba Kewal Singh. They were taken to General Hospital, Bathari, Himachal Pradesh, and Civil Hospital, Garhshankar. One of them, Kiran Bala (60) died. Apart from her, seven people were injured. Three of them were discharged from the hospital after first-aid and those with serious injuries included Harleen Kaur (12), Sarojbala (58), Himanshi (6) and Manveer (10) were undergoing treatment in the Civil Hospital, Garhshankar. JCT workers to start stir from today Our Correspondent PHAGWARA, DECEMBER 1 An indoor meeting of JCT workers was held at Phagwara under the leadership of Kamal Saroj, Shiv Sena leader, Ajay Kumar president, JCT Mill Worker Union/BMS, Sunil Panday (INTUC), Ravi Sidhu, president, INTUC and Tripta Sharma with regard to the payment of arrears to workers and reinstating the electricity and water supply at Thapar Colony, Phagwara. During the meeting, the leaders stated that it had been over one year that workers of the JCT mill are struggling to get the pending arrears, allowances, bonuses, overtime among other payments from the mill owners but nothing had been done by the local administration. The leaders further stated that deliberately, the electricity connection of Thapar Colony had been snapped to harass the workers so that they leave the colony without any protest. The leaders further alleged that the local administration had been supporting directors of JCT mill Sameer Thapar and Mukulika Sinha. During the meeting, the leaders decided that workers would continue to make efforts to get their pending arrears from the mill management and an indefinite protest would be organised by the workers from tomorrow in front of JCT mill gate till their pending arrears were not given and also the electricity was not restored to the colony. YAD vice-chief joins AAP Jalandhar, December 1 The third ‘One Race’ Jalandhar half marathon ‘Daur Jalandhar’ was organised at the local Guru Gobind Singh Stadium today in which international veteran athlete 114year-old Fauja Singh, India’s first blade runner Major DP Singh, Lt General Chandpuria, former Cabinet Minister Amarjit Singh Samra, MD of Capital Bank Sarvjit Singh Samra, Olympians Manpreet Singh and Mandeep Singh flagged off the run. They gave a go-ahead to runners participating in the 21.1 km race, the 10-km race and 5km race from 6.30am to 7:30 am. To encourage runners, Municipal Corporation Commissioner Gautam Jain participated in the 10-km race. More than 4,200 runners of all age groups from Jalandhar and surrounding districts, besides Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi, Mumbai and Ahmedabad participated in this race. With the aim of spreading awareness about mental health, like last year, autistic children were invited to participate in the 3-km race with the help of the Soch Autism Society of Punjab without any sound and the race started with a ‘Quiet Flag Off’. The 5-km runners started from Guru Gobind Singh Stadium and ran from Mall Road, Agarwal Dhaba, Johal Market, Income Tax Colony, Urban Estate-2 Market lights and returned to Guru Gobind Singh Stadium on the same route. This time the winners were given cash prizes of Rs 4,50,000. The prizes were distributed by international athletes Harmilan Bains and Sarvjit Singh Samra. Harmilan Bains praised the half marathon and said if they want to produce international level athletes, then such events should be held as much as possible. In the men’s 21.1-km race in the half marathon, Jaswinder Singh stood first, Anil Kumar Yadav stood second and Rohit Dahiya stood third, while in the women’s category, Pooja stood first, Ruhi Bohra stood second and Pooja Pandey stood third.
