P4 » » 4,000 police personnel, 10 paramilitary units deployed across city WHAT’S ON Chandigarh, December 2 The UT Administration has made tight security arrangements for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Punjab Engineering College (PEC) in Sector 12 here tomorrow. Around 4,000 police personnel and 10 paramilitary units have been deployed across the city to maintain law and order. The Prime Minister will arrive at the old airport around 11:25 am. From there, he is expected to fly by an MI17 helicopter to the Rajindra Park helipad, Sector 1, and then travel by road to PEC, which is less than 1 km away. Home Minister Amit Shah, who arrived in the city on Monday evening, will also attend the event along with Punjab Governor-cum-UT Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria. Punjab BJP protests delay in unveiling of martyr’s statue Tribune News Service Mohali, December 2 A day ahead of PM Narendra Modi’s visit to Chandigarh, the Punjab BJP today staged a protest over the delay in the unveiling of Shaheed-eAzam Bhagat Singh’s statue at the Chandigarh international airport. Punjab BJP vice-president Kewal Dhillon, along with former Jalandhar MP Shushil Rinku, leaders Subhash Sharma, Fateh Jung Bajwa, Vineet Joshi and district president Sanjiv Vashisht, started a march from the Airport Chowk. They claimed that people of Punjab would not tolerate this disrespect to the martyr and unveil the statue themselves. Heavy police force, with trucks parked on the road, stopped the march. They protesters, wearing yellow turbans, were made to board a bus and taken away from the spot. They were arrested at the Mataur police station. The unveiling of the statue has been delayed for the past six months for one reason or the other. It was first delayed due to the election code of conduct and then the state government machinery got busy with the bypoll. The statue was scheduled to be unveiled by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on October 18 and after that on November 28. Finally, the Punjab Chief Minister announced that Nishan-e-Inquilab Plaza would be dedicated to the public and the statue unveiled on December 4 at Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport, Mohali. Deputy Commissioner Aashika Jain today took stock of the ongoing preparations. Officials of the PWD and other departments were giving the finishing touches to the plaza. Chandigarh, December 2 A drug peddler has been arrested by the District Crime Cell (DCC) of the UT police with 4.826 kg ganja. A team of the DCC was patrolling Sector 50 when the suspect, riding a bicycle, was stopped for checking. The youth, identified as 24-year-old Satish Kumar Yadav, a native of Uttar Pradesh, was carrying a bag containing ganja. A case under the NDPS Act has been registered against him at the Sector 49 police station. The police said the suspect worked at a factory in Industrial Area, Mohali. Lohgarh youth rapes 5-yr-old Zirakpur, December 2 The police booked a Lohgarh youth for allegedly raping a five-year-old girl today. The suspect, Rahul, who is the victim’s neighbour, is absconding. On a statement of her mother, the police registered a protection of children from sexual offences (POCSO) case. The police said Rahul raped the girl when she and her younger brother (4) were at home and their parents had gone for work. — TNS Computer operator held for raping minor Tribune News Service Panchkula, December 2 The Panchkula police have arrested a computer operator posted at Civil Hospital, Sector 6, for allegedly raping a minor girl. As per the girl’s statement, the accused allegedly sexually exploited her on the hospital premises. Accused Abhishek was presented in a local court and sent Girl undergoing training alleges accused sexually exploited her in hospital on Oct 20 in one-day police remand. The police said the rape survivor is a minor undergoing training at the hospital. The girl in her complaint said, “Abhishek has tried to befriend me many times. Even after my refusal he did not stop. He also tried to touch me inappropriately and threatened that he would not let me complete my training if I did not have physical relations with him.” The girl added that she was alone in a hospital room on October 20 when Abhishek came there. She alleged that the man made physical relations with her by force, beat her up and also threatened to kill her. The police have conducted a medical examination of the girl. According to the Ministry of Finance, the collection for November this year stood at Rs 253 crore, Rs 43 crore more than Rs 210 crore received during the same month in 2023. An official of the Excise and Taxation stated that the growth was a witness to the department’s rigorous tax administration efforts, coupled with initiatives to raise awareness about compliance. In October, the city saw an increase of 16% against the gross levy collection during the corresponding period in 2023. The collection for October stood at Rs 243 crore, Rs 33 crore more than Rs 210 crore collected during the same month in 2023. On the other hand, the collection for September this year stood at Rs 197 crore, Rs 22 crore less than Rs 219 crore mopped-up during the same month in 2023. The city saw a decline of 10% in the revenue collection during the month. In August, the city saw an Touches ~253 crore against ~210 crore increase of 27% and in July, 8%. The ministry did not share details of the tax collected during the month of June and January this year. The UT Administration had announced a GST collection of Rs 178 crore for May this year, marking a 6% increase from the previous year, i.e. from Rs 168 crore to Rs 178 crore after settlement of IGST. The rise in collections was attributed to enhanced compliance measures, including scrutinies, inspections and audits, said an official of the Excise and Taxation Department. The collection for April saw a rise of 23% at Rs 313 crore. It was Rs 58 crore more than Rs 255 crore generated in 2023. The tax collection for March touched witnessed a growth of 18% at Rs 238 crore against Rs 202 crore collected in 2023.
