Ahead of MC polls, former Mayor Raja, wife quit Congress, join AAP Raja’s entry may mar chances of MLA’s relative to contest from ward no 64 Deepkamal Kaur Tribune News Service Jalandhar, December 9 The entry of the couple, former Congress Mayor Jagdish Raja and his wife and former Senior Deputy Mayor Anita Raja, into the Aam Aadmi Party on Monday has upset the plans of the relative of Jalandhar Central MLA Raman Arora to contest MC elections. Arora’s relative Raju Madaan had staked his claim to contest from ward no 64, which seems to have now been dashed with the entry of ex-Mayor Raja into the party. Arora even attended a function this morning at Adarsh Nagar, falling in the ward, on the invitation of Madaan. Madaan had opened AAP office in the ward where the MLA had gone as the chief guest. Post Raja’s entry into the party through AAP Punjab president Raman Arora and working president Amansher Singh Sharry Kalsi, Madaan’s claim seems to have turned weak. Party leaders have reportedly promised Raja that he would be given AAP ticket from ward no. 64 and his wife from ward no. 65. While Raja Guv to lead walk against drugs Tribune News Service Jalandhar, December 9 Governor of Punjab Gulab Chand Kataria will lead a two-day ‘People’s Walk Against Drugs’ under the Nasha Mukt-Rangla Punjab Campaign on December 10 and 11. This initiative, part of the national Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, underscores the need for collective action and community participation to combat the pervasive issue of substance abuse. The walk, organised in partnership with the Red Cross Society and guided by noted social worker and writer Khushwant Singh, will mobilise citizens to unite against drug addiction. On December 10, the journey will begin from Beas village, home to 114-year-old marathoner Fauja Singh, and will culminate in Bathan village in Jalandhar district. was the last Mayor of the Jalandhar MC getting elected in January 2018, his wife was Senior Deputy Mayor in the previous tenure of the Congress from 2002-07. While Raja has been fivetime councillor, his wife has been three-time councillor and hence both stand a strong claim from AAP as well. Sources in the party said Madaan had been given an assurance that he would be given the post as chairman of a board. His claim to the ticket is based on the ground that he had worked aggressively for the party during the recent Jalandhar West bypoll. Raja, who has obviously joined the new party sensing better prospects, said, “I liked the policies of AAP and hence came here.” He did not have a good equation with District Congress Committee chief and ex-MLA of the area Rajinder Beri, who had supported his claim to become a Mayor. Raja performed well as the Leader of Opposition in the MC Jalandhar from 2013-2018, but earned a lot of criticism during his tenure as the Mayor. Tribune News Service Residents of Urban Estate, Phase I and II, hold a protest in Jalandhar. PHOTO: SARABJIT SINGH Urban Estate residents protest, want garbage dump to be shut Avneet Kaur Tribune News Service Jalandhar, December 9 As the municipal corporation elections near, protests over long-standing issues are gaining momentum. Following yesterday’s demonstration by the Model Town Action Committee, demanding the closure of a dump near the cremation ground, residents of Urban Estate, Phase I and II, along with members of the Phase II Market Association, staged a massive protest today, calling for the shutdown of the Jyoti Nagar garbage dump. The protest, held outside the garbage site in Urban Estate, Phase II, from 12 noon to 2 pm, drew a large number of residents and businessmen, who voiced frustrations over the health risks, environmental hazards and financial losses due to the dump. The protesters said the stench and unsanitary conditions had made life unbearable and businesses unviable in the area. The gathering unanimously decided to intensify the agitation if immediate action was not taken. To pacify the protesters, the MC Joint Commissioner, senior Aam Aadmi Party leader Deepak Bali, Gurcharan Channi, Pawan Tinu and halqa incharge Rajwinder Thiara visited the protest site to address the grievances. They assured the residents that their concerns would be taken seriously and promised to work towards the resolution in the public’s interest. Among the key participants were market association leaders and residents, including Ranvir Kumar, Prof Kanwar Sartaj Singh, Harjinder Singh Randhawa, Karanbir Singh, Jasjit Singh Rai and Dr Anmol Rai. Several others, including Dr Jangpreet, Dr Ashmeet and Dr Sanjay, who closed their OPDs to lent their support to the protest, emphasised the dire health consequences of the continued operation of the dump. The protesters announced their next course of action — a candlelight march scheduled for Wednesday at 5:30pm. The march will start from Chauhan Motor Garage, cover all four sides of the market, and culminate back at the garage. “The residents have been demanding the relocation of the garbage dump for years, citing a sharp rise in respiratory illnesses, mosquito-borne diseases and declining property values. Local businesses have also suffered due to the unbearable odour, driving customers away from the area”, said Prof Kanwar Sartaj, who runs a café in the area. He further said their protests would only escalate if the authorities fail to address their demands. Meanwhile, the mounting pressure by residents of various localities have made the garbage issue a litmus test for the civic authorities, who now face growing scrutiny to resolve the problem before the elections. c m y b Jalandhar, December 9 Congress leaders and members of the party’s legal cell have pointed to huge discrepancies in the process of filing of nomination papers for the December 21 Jalandhar MC elections, the process for which started on Monday. DCC chief Rajinder Beri and general secretary of the party’s legal wing Parminder Vig said the biggest anomaly was that the State Election Commission had not appointed even a single PCS officer as the Returning Officer for receiving papers unlike previous years. They said, “Tehsildars, Deputy Excise and Taxation Officer or Estate Officers of PUDA have served as ROs in the MC polls till the previous election but not this time. We have an apprehension that the PCS officials have been spared to be used later to the advantage of the ruling Aam Aadmi Party in the state”. The only non-engineer in the ROs list from Jalandhar is Deputy Registrar of Cooperative Society. They said the location of the offices where these officials would accept the nomination papers had not been put out anywhere for the convenience of hundreds of candidates. Both alleged that the process of filing of nomination papers was going on in the most unprofessional manner. A legal expert for election work Vig said, “None of the ROs today had a copy of nomination forms or the checklist of the documents to be attached with the papers for submission of claim to contest the elections.
