The administration has made all preparations for it. The building is being given a fresh coat of paint. Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Aggarwal, ADC Amit Mahajan and SDM Randeep Singh Heer were at Red Cross Bhawan this afternoon to supervise all arrangements for seating, security and catering for the gala event. Vaneet Dhir continues to be the frontrunner for the post of Mayor. Karamjeet Kaur is likely to be picked for the post of Senior Deputy Mayor and Malkiat Subhana Deputy Mayor. Suman Kumari of village Ghogra told the police that Prem Sagar, a travel agent from her village, along with his mother Harjinder Kaur, allegedly cheated her of Rs 10 lakh by promising to send her son Trilok to Australia. One of the accused Ankit is also allegedly involved in duping Goraya-based Mandeep Kumar and making him join the Russian army. Jagdeep Kumar, brother of Mandeep, said, “When I got to know about the news that two men were arrested by the Amritsar police, I was shocked. Ankit is one of the accused. I also met the DSP Jalandhar, , who said Ankit would be brought here on production warrant and then he would be inquired and arrested.” Mandeep has been keeping in touch with the police, giving information against travel agents who allegedly tricked his brother into joining the Russian army. Jagdeep was allegedly duped of Rs 6 lakh on the pretext of legally sending his brother from Armenia to Italy via Russia, Finland and Germany. The police had lodged an FIR against eight travel agents in July and one of the arrested in this case is Sohan, a 45-year-old suspect arrested from Dasuya, Hoshiarpur, who was not a registered travel agent. The police said he also used to introduce himself as a journalist working for some news portal Other agents are Gurpreet from Gurdaspur, Sandeep, Joginderpal and Jashan from Bholath, Ankit (Russia) and Gulshan from Pathankot. A case under Section 13 of the Punjab Travel Professional Regulations Act has been c m y b registered against all of them. Jagdeep, while talking to The Tribune, said he was now hopeful that more details would be out once Ankit was arrested here. “I have got to know that other cases are also registered against him in various other places,” he added. Mandeep went to Armenia to earn livelihood, but after spending some time there, he decided to work in Italy. He got to know about travel agent Gurpreet from Gurdaspur through social media. “He then introduced me to Sandeep and others and demanded money. I gave them Rs 6 lakh, but they didn’t fulfil their promise and instead Ankit, who was in Russia, forced my brother to join the army there,” alleged Jagdeep. Sekhri takes charge as Divisional Commissioner Jalandhar, January 10 Senior IAS officer Arun Sekhri, a 2004 batch officer, assumed charge as the Divisional Commissioner of Jalandhar on Friday. Deputy Commissioner Dr Himanshu Aggarwal welcomed Sekhri with a bouquet at the Commissioner’s Office, where a contingent of district police presented a Guard of Honour. In his address, Sekhri emphasised that his priority would be ensuring efficient administration and timely delivery of services to the public. Unregistered schools to be shut: DC Baradari Bagh to have new look Phagwara, January 10 Deputy Commissioner Amit Kumar Panchal has issued strict directives mandating the registration of all pre-nursery and playway schools under the Punjab Government’s notification. He stated that any institution operating without proper registration would face immediate closure. The Deputy Commissioner urged unregistered schools to comply with the norms and contact the District Programme Officer, Kapurthala. Laying the stone, he said the heritage site of Nawanshahr, Baradari Bagh, would be renovated soon. He said this library would be equipped with Wi-Fi, new furniture and modern facilities. He said the historical garden, which has a history of about 200 years, would be given a new look. The MP said that MPLAD fund will be use for this work. “Whatever funds are required to improve the appearance of the garden will be provided. Under this, the buildings, parks, fountains, children’s swings, etc. every- thing will be upgraded. Similarly, the garden will be made beautiful,” he added. Kang further added that Baradari Bagh, which is a witness to the reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, has a rich history and it would be preserved as the heritage of the city. He said this beautiful place spread over about five acres in the city centre was a good place for people to sit and do activities during the morning and evening walks. “It is also a suitable place for children to play. No stone will be left unturned for the continuous maintenance of this heritage place of the city and its development as a centre of tourism,” he said.
